ESL Sample Class: How to Teach Students who are OLDER and SMARTER than you | Teach to Impress!

Being an ESL teacher means being able to switch from one personality and approach to another in a span of seconds to minutes! You can teach students ages 2-55 (or even older! even retirees!). Thus, it is important to take the right approach when teaching older and smarter adults because they have more expectations and different learning goals & needs.

Greetings from an American EFL and Spanish teacher in Taipei, Taiwan-also a subscriber. I have been with my Mandarin Training Center teacher for years-1-on-1 lessons-and she knows my entire life story. She relates lessons to when I was in the Army, when I was a kid in Italy, etc. This really helps the grammar and vocabulary stick, just as you say.

Yes, it all depends on the student. Siguro nasa approach nalang paano natin icorrect. Start with a positive comment followed by a negative one then end with another positive comment, that's the sandwich approach.

I love this video Teacha Karen. Nakaka intimidate talaga ang mga students na mas matanda sayo at kapag tinanong mo "What do you do?" sagot nila, "Engineer, project manager, etc". Yung alam kong mas mataas na ang narating kaysa sa akin. Then ako 23 years old palang at wala pang nararating. Kaya hindi ko tinake yung Business English at IELTS and TOEFL sa self-study courses kasi di ko siya kayang ituro 😂😂

Kaya mo yan, it's all about faking it til you make it, make sure you do not give away your power, don't make them feel na pwede ka nila kaya kayanin, when I was your age I was already teaching students who were 55-60s, live class pa yun, lahat sila they were trying to intimidate me, but in the end, we because allies and good friends :)

It's all about faking credibility. You must continue to work on improving your knowledge of English so that when you teach you would really be an expert on the language and your AGE will not matter at all :) At the end of the day, you are BETTER in English and you have something to give that they don't have :)
