My father, a 1980s throwback to the Greasers from the 50s, a man who was out of touch with the times, in his own day. A man who has not touched a video game since one of his last remaining high school friends recommended DOOM... back in 1998: gave me an amazing tip about the purpose of vidya games. When times are good, people grow bored with thier hum drum life, and they seek adventure and dragons to slay. You want a challenge. Hard gritty stuff sells best in the best of times. But then, when life is kicking your ass, you are looking for respite. A place to forget the world and zone out. You want a chill game with a chipper attitude. Something to pick you up when you come home after a long day. Something casual that won't kick your ass like everything else in your life. Cyberpunk as an aesthetic was alot cooler when it DIDN'T mirror reality. Today, its just a painful reminder of our inevitable collapse. When you unplug from that game, you don't feel better... your not unplugging at all. Your just going from one person's hell back to your own.

Well said. I was gatekept by the Soulsborne community for a bit for roll spamming and using a Greatshield. I took it to heart, ditched both, managed to no-hit every single boss in Bloodborne and DS3, have like 4k hours across them all, and it's now my favorite series in gaming. I am so fucking thankful that people called me a bitch and a casual for thinking my playstyle was the right one. Because if you're not actually a bitch and a casual, instead of melting under those words, you instead go for some introspection and may just find out their criticism is on point. Gatekeepers made me understand the best series I've ever played. And now? Now I'm one of them. Was part of massive communities like JeeNine's and ChaseTheBro's for years. They don't gatekeep each other, just the idiots attempting to ruin it. And that's probably why Elden Ring was a light in the dark of gaming. From Software has an incredible audience of gatekeepers who keep their games safe from toxic weaklings.

This is my ultimate gripe with fiction nowadays. ''That's perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards''. First time I read that, I knew fiction was dead. It was never supposed to be realistic. Realism should be implemented to supplement fun. If it doesn't, leave it at the door. The purpose of entertainment, is fun, not realism. I don't want to be faced with the madness of the masses in the one place I used to be able to escape from it. Edit: It's interesting how even when I point this out so clearly, people can't help but try to inject their woke venom into you to keep you from your escapism.

I don't think there's anything wrong with realism in fiction as a concept, but it shouldn't be forced to be the standard. If I want to make something reflective of reality, that should be fine. On the same note, if I want to disregard reality entirely, that should also be fine.

This is why some games, such as The Last Of Us 1, were so great. The ever present realism gave depth to the gameplay and the story. Obviously the second one ran it into the ground, but besides the point. I am not against realism. I am currently in the midst of writing a massive medieval high fantasy, one that gets increasingly more fictional and less realistic, but one whose roots being strongly written in my knowledge of medieval Europe give the story weight and depth. Simple rules like if someone is cut badly, they die from blood loss or infection, etc. These things can enhance a story. They can create stakes, which in the most natural way possible forces investment in the characters because you are faced with the *reality* that they are not invincible. But again, they ENHANCE a story. Realism can be a storytelling tool like any other. Once it gets in the way of story/gameplay, or any form of enjoyment, then it becomes an issue. Realism has its place in fiction. It does not however have its place in ALL forms of fiction. I find characters like Joel from TLOU1 no better written than characters like Death from Darksiders 2. And yet look at how different they are. This shows that realism can be a great tool, but isn't required in the slightest in many genres of fiction, and is often detrimental to them. And on a final note, there's also a ton of hypocrisy here, best noted in Thor: Love and Thunder. The MCU quit it with the butt shots of Scarlet Johansson and publicly apologised, saying the sexual objectification of women is wrong and something they're moving away from, but then they make Chris Hemsworth roid his nuts off to look like a literal photoshopped Gigachad, put him butt fucking naked in front of an audience of men and women, digitally enhance him to make his already borderline superhuman physique even more impressive, and then has the entire crowd faint from sexual overload while women, his own damn friends at that, are eating grapes laughing about how they'll help him in a bit, after they've enjoyed the show? That's okay, but a butt shot of a woman in full gear isn't? Fucking unbelievable. So not only is this striving for realism retarded as it is far from welcome in every genre of fiction, it is also massively single edged, probably because when mediocre women see a pretty woman, they feel envy, while mediocre men looking at a top 0.1% guy, they think ''Yup, that's the goal.'' And then strive to achieve a similar result. TL;DR Realism should exclusively be used as a tool to enhance stories with, and as such it doesn't have its place everywhere. It is also used in hypocritical ways to weaponize it against men, making it even more tricky nowadays.

The industry died the second they started hiring based on sexuality and race instead of the most qualified. Just look at the staff photos of when games were awesome compared to them now.

I always said that people didn't complain about politics in games, they were complaining about blatant propaganda in games. We live in the Soviet Union of the 21th century, except even their propaganda wasn't this all-encompassing and suffocating. In the Soviet Union they reminded you Communism was great, then they move on with the actual movie. In the American Union you are required to, at all times, signal your loyalty to the rainbow garbage.

I don't want political messages and ads for communism in my games. He also hit the nail on the head with Outer Worlds which is much more shallow than Obsidians Fallout titles which let you exist in neutral state and choose which faction to be. Those earlier games had more thought, better design, and more freedom to determine the path you want. The new one: "capitalism is bad dude" even though these american companies don't want us pirating their games like the chinese who just get it free because communism doesn't let you own anything. HEHE I would love to see Obsidian make a RPG set in a communist controlled america where there is no private ownership and nobody makes quality products because there is no incentive to do a better job than your peers. (guns would jam every second, cars would break down, busses would always be late, and the guys that try to get ahead are bullied by co-workers for working too hard and making all the lazy co-workers look slack in front of the boss just because they take pride in putting effort into something. If they want to criticise capitalism, why not take jab at commies too? Answer: Because the woke people hate looking at the mirror and seeing their own ugliness. We gamers want to see it ALL. Make fun of all the badguys and let us even play the bad guy if we choose. That is what good role playing games allow for. That was what gaming was prior to woke mob hijacking companies with their political propaganda. At first it was overt, and now it's more subversive since they know there is pushback against it. (which makes it more hard to detect on the surface - but the result is the same: if you paid money to these companies that make it, you are part of the problem now! Ghost in the Shell has identity politics. I still enjoyed it and at times, as an escapist fantasy. The real problem is the corporate schedule and working conditions forcing devs to spit stuff out at ludicrous paces. The positive is, it forces you to turn to more wholesome things and whats actually important in life. Family, community, lifestyle etc. There are also still pockets of entertainment that are good, lots of great book series out there and some good games. For example, I've started consuming a lot more japanese media like Soulsborne, Berserk etc.

Its not even just politics. Modern games have devolved into generic, buggy RPG grindfests. No ominous background music, inconsistent tone, poorly thoughtout gameplay, no effort into crafting an immersive atmosphere. Just played an older game a few months ago for the first time (Splinter Cell 1), and it was refreshing and extremely enjoyable. So its not even nostalgia affecting me because I never played it in the first place. I just continue to replay these older games.

19:15 regarding the "politics have always been in games" comment. The problem with it is, is that it only goes one way and that's the progressive way. Furthermore, since things seem to be accelerating, it's easy to see the kind of politics that were being pushed in the past that a lot of us were blind to before. For instance, I never realized until recently that there were so many anti-Christian movies in the past 30 to 40 years that I grew up with. I also looked at the background of the people who made the movies and it starts to make sense why some people think the way they do.

The "Crazy Left" would lose their minds, sure, but people like me wouldn't give a shit either way. That's the difference between people with their brains on identity politics, and people who want to just enjoy games for what they are. Many people over-analyze every last aspect of video games and fiction in general, trying to find potential parallels to reality and then exaggerating them to inflate their own ego. Others though, like myself, prefer to consider only the question: does it make sense in the universe? That is the most important factor to me being immersed, and I don't consider real-world politics after considering that question unless the examples are particularly egregious. The changes in Dead Space as far as "political" angles go, frankly, are so minor as to make any complaint about them absolutely nonsensical. Because none of the changes at all break immersion with the universe as written, and in fact I would argue they are sometimes more believable in such a futuristic setting. What is more realistic the far future at the rate we're going: that you would have space crews made up of racially diverse members, or that they are mostly all just white guys - including on their posters?

At least I’m not the only one who thinks the Necromorphs in the remake are borderline comedic and over the top. The first couple I came across in the Dead Space remake actually had me chuckling with the puppet like movement and the noises that reminded me of the kinds my friends and I would make when we would try to imitate something scary as kids. In the original they seem much scarier. It’s almost like they tried too hard.

Wtf!?! All gender bathroom!?! And I thought the Necromorphs were the most terrifying thing in space, the Transformers are back...with a vengeance!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!

The most important governing rule of fiction - everything in a work has to be consciously placed in said work - is frequently dismissed as being "unimportant" or a "nitpick". If the thing was so "unimportant" then why did the creator(s) of a given work feel the need place it in there in the first place? It's astonishing just how underdeveloped people's critical faculties are when it comes to fiction. I honestly don't know if it's apathy, normalization, simply laziness, or some combination of the three.

The fact that I was shocked by some of the things you said horrifies me. None of what you said was racist or homophobic in any way, you just don’t sugarcoat things or lie. It’s crazy how the world conditions people into being against the few reasonable people. And I do agree that the amount of politics in video games is suffocating. I don’t care if a character is lgbt or whatever, just don’t have it be mentioned 59 times, and don’t make their character a flawless angel or insanely strong because of it. If they just happen to be gay and are otherwise like any other character it wouldn’t be nearly as bad. (And don’t fill half the cast with them I’ve met like 15 lgbt out of thousands) Your just saying the truth and his opinions while still (mostly) respecting the others opinion, which is insanely rare. Definitely deserves a sub!

Which encourages oppression and conformerism rather than diversity and individuality. 2: There’s a disproportionate amount of lgbtq within not only games but media in general, there’s usually a number of them in a game or movie despite being a relatively rare phenomenon. This isn’t a issue in my eyes however it’s blatantly political. 3: rather than a general point on this one I’ll talk about the game “The Last Of Us” where they have an unrealistically strong woman, this almost definitely exists as another political “point” used to further the games success. Again, I have no issue with this character or trope in general, women need strong people to look up to as well, just like you wouldn’t criticize Nathan Drake i wouldn’t normally criticize her, this is just so I can explain that she is another example of politics affecting games. In conclusion, I don’t care very much about most politics in games, however suppressing conservatism is a horrible thing and not allowing people to develop their own opinions and forcing what society believes as correct onto them is how horrible tragedies like the holocaust occurred. I used to be a massive Halo fan, and then Halo 5 was made and it was obvious that it was made to cater to the Call of Duty kids. Whenever I had expressed my worry for the state of Halo, people would tell me that a “broader audience” is good for Halo. Now look what happened to it. It is but a shell of its former self - completely confused by what it is supposed to be. Halo was my childhood and I want to enjoy playing it. 343 has made it impossible for me to play Halo without its collapse weighing on my mind.

@@euric869 I almost forgot, yep the new one is clearly considerably more cringe than older entries. This issue tends to be more present in IPs that are popular in the West as these companies are chasing the Western market. The exception being Dead or Alive as the devs themselves have taken a drastic ideological shift. I've noticed that fighting games have also been declining heavily just on their own in quality. Like compare Tekken from the PS2 era to today. The new ones are barely able to load battles and just feel off.

This guy always says things I wanna say. Like “art is supposed to be beautiful” and so on. Truth is, every single developer who makes these “political” changes have a frail hope of “changing the world,” that’s why the TLOU Part 2 is hated so much. Neil wanted it to be “deep” and be seen as some sort of philosopher but ffs it only made him look like a fool.

Like “yes this is good but it can also be THIS” like depictions of Hell or whatnot. I think video games are reaching that point where mainstream games just want “realistic-looking” characters (who just look ugly) so it wouldn’t surprise me if other devs saw that and just go “yeah, no” and proceed to make all their characters hot out of spite lol

@@cassiushellsin6243 Actually, no. Artists did stuff differently in order to push boundaries, explore possibilities what can be done in art so they could expand how they can express themselves. The first thing artists have to learn is how the real world functions, movement, anatomy etc. Only when they've mastered it can they expand on it. Go check out Picasso's portraits before he went into Cubism. It's not just developers that want realism, it's the gamers as well. And not for all genres. Making characters "hot out of spite" wouldn't be any kind of artistic statement if the argument was that characters in realistic games are "ugly" as context and purpose matter. Also, insisting that characters have to be hot by default - especially the female characters - is a very shallow way of thinking about art. And, contrary to what his videos say, making characters "ugly" is not communism.

@@mladens1779 I see I see. I do like the concept of characters who look attractive but it contrasts the messed up things they go through. It’s not a “default,” more of a “contrast” between what the viewer sees and what it’s eventually revealed about said characters they like. Also, the problem with “ugly” characters isn’t that it isn’t realistic or “communistic,” it’s that it seems to dictate their character. Have you noticed how all “woke” shit is simply saying “ugly can be heroic,” “female strong,” “strong man can be weak,” etc. and it’s just… stereotypes. The developers/writers are trying to make a statement by making their writing fit with what they make. It all turns goofy. Can’t make a female strong without them making or even admitting to their mistakes because that would make them, well, flawed, and the writers don’t want that because that would make them feel insecure about themselves. That’s what I’ve gathered, however. That’s why making characters “attractive” while still being flawed and in-perfect would completely contrast what woke media wants. Also, I’m practicing animation, so learning movements, anatomy , proper proportions, and even a sense of speed and weight, etc. ARE what makes it worth it for me. That’s what I love about animation: it’s an art form that can have both realistic and over-exaggerated properties.

True, but isn't that mostly because these games (and also movies and most mainstream music) are written for kids and young adults? I mean, read virtually any book by Michel Houellebecq, and he picks you right up from where you are if you're a middle-aged man. So the good stuff exists, just not in gaming and movies anymore. It still exists in books though, so that's what I find myself turning to more and more the older I get.

You are very right indeed. I think reading is really where the value is at. Ironically I used to read A LOT when I was young and much less so now that I am in my mid 30s. I do like to game but find less and less that really appeals to me or manages to catch my interest in the long run. Usually things that manage to reel me in don't rely on immersion but more on the "having to survive a pvp encounter" factor. As for the characters/story lines etc. it's pretty much all "been there done that". Maybe it's just my personal propensity of having an analytic mind but there's very little depth and/or originality imo. Thanks for the author recommendation, i'll check him out.@@CC3GROUNDZERO

Idk, I think “immersion” is a popular buzzword that people think is important in games, but I don’t think is actually what makes a game fun or good. I’ve never thought or felt that these mechanics are immersive, which is why I’m having fun. I’ve never felt that a world is immersive, which is why I’m having fun. I like hoi4 and games like this are NOT immersive at all. I’m not trying to insert myself into ww2 or whatever time period mod im playing, I’m trying to rewrite history. In that 25th anniversary documentary about HL and Valve, gaben said he feels that players are narcissistic and want to see their influence in the gameworld, which is why bullet holes help make a FPS feel fun. The way I play and enjoy games agrees with gaben. Also, I get just as emotional reading LOTR and the Ride of The Roharim in my adulthood just as much as when I was a kid reading it for the first time. I genuinely don’t think age has anything to do with it

Most times i ignore the story and only care about gameplay. Like Celeste is a great platformer iccl about the story but from my recollection it was about a bipolar/ manic depressive girl learning to overcome the depression of a losing a family member by climbing a mountain and learning to balance the good and bad of life. It's the basic "learn to get up when you fall" cliche sure but all ik is the gameplay kicked ass easily in my top 5 platforming games
