ESCAPE NO CRANK NO START - ITS NOT THE STARTER! - 2011 FORD ESCAPE IGNITION LOCK HOUSING REPLACEMENT

In todays video we diagnose and replace the Ignition Lock Housing on a 2011 ford escape. This is a common issue on many ford, Lincoln, Mercury vehicles in that range. Over time the lock housing wears out and no longer transfers the turning motion from the lock cylinder into the ignition switch. When this happens it causes the starter to not be told to engage and thus leaving the car a no crank no start. Often times this happens slowly with each start becoming harder and harder to get to engage.
To diagnose this issue we found that we could only get the vehicle to start when pressing the ignition hard into the cylinder and turning as far as we could and holding. Usually this would allow it to start. However, that just means its going to keep getting worse. After replacement we have no issues starting it.
The job is very simple and some steps are below as well as tools and parts.
Parts : Dorman 989-019 Ignition Lock Housing for Select Ford/Mazda/Mercury Models (OE FIX)
Tools :

5. Remove Steering wheel bolt (T50)
6. Disconnect electrical connectors as needed before continuing
7. Use puller to remove steering wheel.

9. Remove Turn signal indicator (3 5.5 MM screws Top bottom front)
10. Use a grinder or cutting tool to notch a flat groove in the shear bolt

Thank you so much for mentioning that the cylinder housing needs to be adjusted in the new part before the cylinder will fit in correctly!!!! We were following another video for this repair and this is where we got stuck for like 30 minutes trying to figure out why the cylinder wouldn’t fit in the new part!!! Thank God we found your video!

12/18/23 - Good work on explaining tools needed, prep, etc. The sun was actually good for recording this, you didn't need extra lighting at all. I think I need this repair on my '10 Escape XLS. I have electric-assisted-steering-by-wire so the clockspring mechanism is critical on removing and positioning. Ford has a recall on these going bad. Did this Escape have electric-assisted-steering-by-wire or power steering hydraulics? The no crank problem happened to me, once about ago month ago. But it started with a jump pack attached. Not sure if that was what helped it. My battery was under warranty at autozone, so I immediately went there and they checked it out as good to go, not even 2 yrs old. Now it won't crank, and sounding like it's a bad starter motor (noise like a solenoid is chattering). Thanks in advance if you can reply.

I am very familiar with the steering for the by wire. I have on a Mariner (same part and job as escape) relaced the angle sensor. The cars wheel kept shaking left and right and ultimately I ended up replacing the steering angle sensor. super scary putting the key in the first time after replacing that! This escape I dont believe I remember having to mess with the angle sensor on the job in this video so it either didn't have it or its so far down the steering shaft it doesn't need to be touched for the job. Since the angle sensor is deeper down the steering wheel I don't think it changes the job with or without electronic but please dont quote me on that.

also for this issue on the escape no amount of power change with jump or jump pack changed how the key reacted. I wouldn't think its the same issue unless it was just lucky to work better. I would suspect as you did if the starter/solenoid is making unusual noises it may very well be on its way out. As always make sure all connections are clean power/ground on battery and on car/starter. As corrosion can cause tons of issues and have you doubting yourself.

Thanks for the quick reply! You're right, the part I was referring to is not involved for this fix. Just looked at a video for replacing PS Torque Sensor on an Escape. Now I'm thinking my problem is battery issue/wiring harness problem (bad ground or hot short) or charging system problem.@@JustFixinGarage

The key cylinder shouldbt but multi function switch (the stick that you use to turn it on and off for wipers ) may be going bad . This same escape has had that replaced before

Is it possible the ring around the cylinder is unpluggged ? That plastic ring is what picks up the signal from the key. If it was damaged or unhooked it would likely cause that issue .
