Ernesto Sirolli: Want to help someone? Shut up and listen!

When most well-intentioned aid workers hear of a problem they think they can fix, they go to work. This, Ernesto Sirolli suggests, is naïve. In this funny and impassioned talk, he proposes that the first step is to listen to the people you're trying to help, and tap into their own entrepreneurial spirit. His advice on what works will help any entrepreneur.

brilliant hes so right when i was volunteering in Africa i saw this phantomon also. I stepped out of the service of my project and started my own (I saw the projects which they were doing didnt help). I talked to people and asked them what was wrong in their lives and what would help to make it better. I helped a few people straight away after a month I had at least 20 people wanting my help. And I helped 6 people with their lives (business and personal). He's so right in this.

'Two ears, one mouth'. Listen twice as much as you talk. The essence of democracy is active listening; it is also an act of fundamental respect. If we talk first, with some agenda, our message is unlikely to hit home or get through. It is as if their cup is full and they will therefor hear nothing. If we listen first, with great intent, it is as if they are pouring out what is relevant to their needs, or troubles and so on and only then can we truly formulate a relevant response that can begin to be taken on board. The ideal is a symbiotic relationship. And when we talk, may it be from the heart. This is the essence of culture and soft power. Grazie Senior Ernesto - wonderful !

He's striking at the core, see what the people want, not what we may think they need. Let them naturally arrive to a better way of life, arrive to answer on their own. I teach high school algebra, the greatest way for a person to learn is to allow them to find and provide just enough resources so the answer can be found without giving it up. Another one of the greatest ways to reach kids is hear what they want to do and help them achieve it, even if it has nothing to do the math.

If You Summarise this in a few points:- 1) Communication- Enforcing People to buy Solution to a Problem without gathering Insights of them can lead to a Complete Failure. 2) Planning can be the worst step you can take for a Start up if Adaptation is not met with time. Specifically in a Growing Entrepreneurial Econonmy. 3) Confidentiality and Dedication to approach People with Ideas is a must. And To make them know the 3 steps: 1) Product has to Be Fascinating. 2) So must be the Marketing. 3) Financial Management is a must. 4) You always need a Good Team.

I think the point is that highly educated people go into these communities presuming to know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it, thus the speech on how to put aside those presumptions and listen first, then act, not to act and then listen later. But also to listen to those who are willing to make a lasting change, like an entrepreneur. Ernesto isn't saying that everyone already doesn't know this, he's highlighting that it's obvious some people do not.

I could not agree more! But the key here is to stay away from Federal control. Governments simply cannot do what Mr. Sirolli proposes. But those of us working with these populations need to seriously rethink howwe operate and how we "design programs." Starting with face to face conversations that lead to individual commitments could seriously change our world.

This video is one of the most compelling TED videos I've seen. (I've seen hundreds.) It makes me wonder: is there a similar applicability to social programs in the U.S. and other "first world" countries? Too bad Mr. Sirolli didn't serve with such social programs in addition to foreign aid programs. There are many critics of the U.S. welfare system who say it encourages dependence on government. TED needs a vid about works inside "first world" borders.

I love it when live and learn turns into live, learn and teach. Reminds me, in a small way, of when I visited Jamaica and I was offered watermelon. My friend said, "We call it WATA MELON." Had no idea we have them in Canada too. We don't often clue in on the best ways to teach each other easily. The first step of teaching IS learning. This presentation illustrates that beautifully.
