After 5 years of sailing on courses, cruises and 2,5 years of working as an instructor on inland sailboats (with tiller and outboard engine so no prop walk and rudder delay) I can tell I am beginning to comprehend how to use wind in my favor and maneuver profficiently and only now I am even entertaining a thought to rent a keelboat. Besides, in such strong winds I'd look for a covered harbour or plan my route in such a way to already be docked when it starts to blow

And they did this exact maneuver like three times - each time crashing into the other boats...unbelievable. Damage would have been so much less if they just kept drifting into the other ones.

Best conditions to dock a boat in Ermioni here. The wind comes from the front, so they only had to drop the anker 15 meters before they entered the gap and they would have been drifted to the pier slowly and save. But they forgot to drop the anker first, so the conditions went from perfect to shitty in seconds.

If you rent a 52 feet boat, with a weight (displacement) of around 14-15 tonnes, you can NOT be a bloody amateur. It seems to me that these people were not used to sailing boats at all. They think they have rented a car - with plenty of space for all the people. What could possibly go wrong? Well, almost everything. Many of the maneuvres are just...insane. As Kris Sanders pointed out below, the starboard turn with full speed ahead at 1:25 is among the worst I've seen.

Bow thruster to starboard is also wrong ... He had almost entered the bow. He could give the engine a little ahead and rudder to the right and was free. At that point he kept himself with the fenders on the sides and then calmly he could go out. (sorry for my English)

In the Med, they do what's called a "Med Moor", you drop the anchor and back in to the seawall, then tie off to it. That way you can fit 2 - 3 boats in compared to one tied up broadside to the dock. It can be a tough maneuver (especially for new boaters) when the wind picks up but you put out a bunch of fenders and everyone helps out. I don't think anything would have helped out this crew except for never getting on the boat in the first place. And you look closely, the crew seem to be wearing company uniforms, which is a bit scary. But yes, it made me cringe!

I can relate to the anxiety of reversing to the dock, but this example is plain insane. It is even a fin keeled boat which is relatively responsive to helm and easy to handle compared to longer keel boats. If there was an instructor on the boat or nearby he/she should have taken the lead before the start of this video.

At this point probably best to just beach the boat before you do any more damage! But seriously, take her back out to the middle of the bay. Put the boat in neutral and take a breather.

Even better, go out into the bay and drop the anchor (with a lot of chain out) and wait for a professional crew from the charter company to take over. The yacht needs to be taken round to Kilada and lifted out asap coz that propeller's toast after chewing up the other yacht's chain!

At 0:35 the guy is in the box and relatively safe. Just the wrong way around. But this is much better compared to what comes later. He made damage to not one, but to 4 boats. I wonder if the insurance wil pay this at all. This could have been the most expensive vacation ever. - At 2:00 he again is in the box, but most likely he wants to escape as the other crews would have killed him for sure.

Four beautiful boats trashed. Who would give a £400,000 52ft 15 Tonne yacht to a bloke who turns up with an International Certificate of Competence (ICC). You can sit your ICC on a flat calm day on a 35ft yacht. That doesn't train you for the situation in this video. In the Med you line up and drop your anchor at the start of reversing in, his was still on the bow. On the SailGreece website it says "All our boats are in perfect condition" - not any more!!

Kontiki was already anchored and tied to the shore like half an hour before, I even took the ropes from them - this skipper wanted to leave as the guy next to him started to panic if the wind start blowing it will push kontiki on his yacht (much smaller)... it doesnt explain what he did after catching the first chain though. As for perfect condition of greek charter boats - i'm not moving without a tool box ;)
