One of my fav's too. And a nice callback, when she said a similar thing to him "Do they teach laywers to apologize? Because you suck at it." :D And the way Ed/Albert Finney plays that scene, was just perfection. Trying to stifle a laugh, when he knows the shock she'll get when she sees the check, and letting her go off on him.

Adding to the cameos by Erin and Ed in the diner, the judge who dismissed the demurs and told them they're going to trial was the *actual* judge on the case - LeRoy A. Simmons - reprising his role! Thanks for the reaction - I'm a law student and this is a movie I've been returning to again and again as I continue my studies. I can also recommend The Rainmaker and A Civil Action as two other legal dramas worthy of your attention 😊

Fun Fact: Julia Roberts won Best Actress Oscar for this film. Also, the film's director (Steven Soderbergh) made 2 movies in the year 2000 (this film and TRAFFIC) and he received Best Director Oscar nominations for both movies in the same year. He became only the 2nd ever director to pull this off (after Michael Curtiz back in 1938). He actually ended up winning one of his nominations (TRAFFIC), the only time ever in Oscars history this event has ever happened in the Director category.

You've probably seen "bundt cake" before. It's made by pouring the cake batter into a particular form for baking. When it's finished, It looks kind of like a ring of hills. (The reason it became popular is because the large surface area of the shape makes it really easy for the cake to quickly cook all the way through, so it has a relatively short baking time and a low danger of ending up raw in the middle or burnt on the edges.)

I read the book that this movie is based on. I also read a similar book that came out at about the same time called A Civil Action. It too was a true story that revolved around a similar incident; a company had been poisoning a town's water supply. But in that book and movie, it turned out the judge was in sort of cahoots with one of the attorneys from the company. The lawyer who brought the case on behalf of the town lost the case and wound up bankrupt and broke because of the judge.

Albert Finney, who played Ed Masry, was a British actor of long experience with many movies under his belt. His first big role was as Tom Jones in the movie by that title (1963), a movie that's about as British as you can get. The contrast between Tom, a mischievous young man who draws women to him like ants to sugar, and Ed Masry, could only be accomplished by a veteran of Finney's stature.

Ed was a side kick on Late Night TV back in the 60's, 70's on 'The Johnny Carson Show' He also was the face for 'Publishing Clearance Warehouse' and their $1,000,000.00 dollar sweepstakes where they came to your door to present the prize. There's also a terrific script from Susannah Grant with so many great lines for Erin. It's also a reminder of the world we live in and how some corporations have total contempt for ordinary people. Of course, that's hardly news but it's important that we feel angry about it much like Erin does. It's inspiring.

"is surgery that expensive?" let me put it this way - THIRTY TWO YEARS AGO i was in a car wreck and dislocated my right leg. the bill for "closed reduction surgery" ( that means they did NOT have to cut me open, they just popped it back in place) and for the 2 days i had to spend in a hospital room, was OVER $85,000. and - again - that was 32 years ago. so... yeah. american medical bills are INSANE.
