Hartmann learned to fly at his mother’s pilot school and by the age of 14, he became an instructor then. As Nazism seemingly rejuvenated Germany’s economy at the time, Hartmann became a member of the party and it was no surprise when he enlisted at the beginning of the war.
He received training from Germany’s best war pilots at the time and soon started doing flying missions. Hartmann developed his own fighting technique which included getting closer to the enemy so that they wouldn’t notice you until too late and would have no time to react.
Soon he was becoming infamous in the enemy lines and they nicknamed him “The Black Devil” after a painted black tulip on his airplane.
Hartmann received a medal from Adolf Hitler himself and continued to fight for Germany until the very end of the war. He was imprisoned for 10 years after which he became an officer in West Germany.

Also, not everyone in the SS was necessarily a Nazi, especially since later in the war, a lot got drafted into the SS by force. Very important to mention, he was battle ready in OKTOBER 1942. This means he was active fighter pilot during the WWII only for about 2,5 years...and fought against more modern planes... other pilots three years earlier had easier opponents. This make the score even more spectacular.

Oberst Erich Hartmann was a childhood hero of mine... I'd always wanted to be a fighter pilot. Ended up a tank gunner, so go figure :) But while I was serving in the 11th ACR in Germany in 1983-4, I had the privilege of meeting him. He was dignified and humble, yet proud of himself. He didn't have to prove himself to anyone, but wasn't a braggart either. He was a flyer's flyer, willing to skosh his career in the post War Bundeswehr Luftwaffe because he felt that an aircraft he had to order his pilots to fly was unsafe. He remained married to the love of his life, Ursula, until the day he died. I'm in my middle 50's and I hope I grow up to be just like him.

Very poor infographic. This is going to be a long one. Firstly, Hartmann never joined the Nazi party. In fact, he wasn't a big fan of Hitler either. He even expressed discomfort with the idea of painting the standard Swastika insignia on his plane's fin stating how bringing politics into their(his squadron's) life and death struggle is in bad taste. Upon being called to receive his Knight's Cross from Hitler himself, he was demanded by a guard to leave his sidearm outside. He then replied, "If the fuhrer can't trust one of his soldiers with his weapon, then he could take his Knight's Cross and shove it up his ass where it belongs." He was then allowed to meet Hitler with his weapon. The reason he was given a lengthy and harsh prison sentence in the Siberian gulags was because the Soviets hated him and fabricated false accusations of him firing on civilian targets and hospitals on multiple occasions. This was a claim that the government of the Russian Federation later retracted and openly claimed to be false. In the gulags, he was coerced to join the Communist East German Airforce which he refused despite the Russians threatening to harm his wife and children. While he was in prison, his 3 year old child died but he kept up his defiance in order to boost morale among his fellow inmates whom look up to him. Hartmann's personality could be described as heroic, rebellious, gutsy, and honorable. He could've easily escaped when Germany surrendered but stayed with his squadron so that he could guide them into American custody since Soviets getting their hands on them would mean years of hard labor and certain death in their gulags. The reason he wasn't doing so well in his post-war military career wasn't because he was a "former Nazi" but because he was advocating against purchasing the highly unstable Lockheed Martin F-104 Starfighter that has killed dozens of test pilots. The purchase and deal in general was highly political in nature and those in power who benefited from the purchase got rid of Hartmann. He was a tragic figure; a young, rebellious fighter pilot turned hero... to his men and country at least. (edit: There. F-one-o-FOUR Starfighter. Happy? My point still stands. It was a shit plane.)

Part of the eightfold victories of german aces compared to americans, is due to the overwhelming superiority of alliied air forces, materials, soldiers and their supply. Remember, Hartmann didn`t have the opportunity to cancel his contract with third Reich`s whole people enterprise. He killed enemy fighters in a knightly way, he didn`t attack and terrorize foreign civilians, and he didn`t attack civilians in a low-level-flight. Imprisoned as POW he was forced to live as a slave for ten futher years in russian gulags. I would never presume to give lessons concerning Hartmann. To paraphrase, it mostly had to do with pilots on the allies side being rotated in and out of duty. Also American pilots were better overall. There training was much better, specially towards the end of the war. Also can't forget Britain and how they defeated the luffewaffe. If they were so good. How come they loose?

RAF won the battle of britain beacuse Hitler didint send all bombers to bomb airfields and bf109 had realy tiny range so they couldnt fight in britain very long time. Also Göring ordered fighters fly near as bosible to bombers and then fighters lose theyr high altitude advance. Allies won the war beacuse they had superiority.

One of the Aces of that War was asked once why they had so many shoot downs, he said well we flew for the duration and we had a target rich environment. If you honestly think that way, you should get medication and therapy for Wehraboo Disorder. The bully got bullied. Once someone stood up and had resources to fight back, Nazi Germany folded. Allies had at least equally skilled top fighter aces and planes. It's wrong to look at kill numbers and draw conclusions without thinking about the circumstances of Axis vs Allies fighter pilots were facing. Axis pilots flew more missions, had more targets of opportunity, did not have a rotation system for their pilots. For example look at Pat Pattle: 60 kills in 9 months of WW2, 26 kills in 14 days at one point, 5 or more kills per day 3 times. George Beurling: 31 kills in 20 months. Not many opportunities to score except on Malta, where he killed 27 enemy A/C in 14 days.

@@anonymous8780 Complete utter nonsense. Take a look at the list of WW2 aces, GERMANY HAD ALL THE TOP 100 ENTIRES, ALL OF THEM! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_flying_aces#Table Hans-Joachim Marseille has 158 mostly RAF kills in 25 months, he dwarfes Beurling. He had 17 RAF kills IN ONE SINGLE DAY! Nearly all his wins were against other RAF fighters. "Marseille was the unrivalled virtuoso among the fighter pilots of World War 2. His achievements had previously been regarded as impossible and they were never excelled by anyone after his death."[40] Adolf Galland, General der Jagdflieger Pat Pattle only shot down 9 Messerschmitts, most of his 60 kills were against large and slow Italian and German air transport planes flying on convoys. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Pattle#List_of_victories More on Marseille, who was the best WW2 ace, one of a dozen Luftwaffe aces to score over 100 victories: His attack method to break up formations, which he perfected, resulted in a high proportion of victories, and in rapid, multiple victories per attack. On 3 June 1942, Marseille attacked a formation of 16 Curtiss P-40 fighters and shot down six aircraft of No. 5 Squadron SAAF, five of them in six minutes, including three aces: Robin Pare (six victories), Cecil Golding (6.5 victories) and Andre Botha (five victories); the latter crash-landed his damaged fighter. This success inflated his score further, recording his 70-75th victories. Marseille was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves on 6 June 1942.[57] His wingman Rainer Pöttgen, nicknamed Fliegendes Zählwerk (the "Flying Counting Machine"),[58] said of this fight: All the enemy were shot down by Marseille in a turning dogfight. As soon as he shot, he needed only to glance at the enemy plane. His pattern [of gunfire] began at the front, the engine's nose, and consistently ended in the cockpit. How he was able to do this not even he could explain. With every dogfight he would throttle back as far as possible; this enabled him to fly tighter turns. His expenditure of ammunition in this air battle was 360 rounds (60 per aircraft shot down) Schröer, did however, place Marseille's methods into context: He was the most amazing and ingenious combat pilot I ever saw. He was also very lucky on many occasions. He thought nothing of jumping into a fight outnumbered ten to one, often alone, with us trying to catch up to him. He violated every cardinal rule of fighter combat. He abandoned all the rules.[59]

@@Citadin Typical Wehraboo response, repeating the same things and thinking it proves your point when you can't accept reality. "Pattle shot down only 9 Messerschmitts" He was flying an outdated Gladiators and Hurricanes and shooting down Nazi and Fascist Italian fighters and bombers like a champion, deal with it. Beurling was also an equally impressive hero Nazi slayer. Both were masters of deflection shooting and situational awareness, like most of the other top aces. Marseille shot down outdated P-40s and tropicalised Hurricanes, bullying the slow and low victims with his 109 F-4, the best variant of that dirty Nazi plane. Any top Allied ace squadrons flying a decent plane would wipe out his Nazi squadron in minutes. I've seen Galland's quotes years ago, I don't care about his biased Nazi opinions anymore. I wonder if any kraut fuckers got Hitler's moustache hairs on their iron cross...

@@anonymous8780 haha you're a hoot. Marseille shot down dozens of Spitfires too, both in the Battle of Britain and in Africa. As well, the Germans were greatly outnumbered, especially in the later month of the African campaign, more than 10 to 1 disadvantage vs the RAF. Marseille would dive solo into a formation of 10+ Brits and tear through them like a hot knife (MESSER) through clotted cream! "Marseille had nearly surpassed his friend Hans-Arnold Stahlschmidt's score of 59 victories in just five weeks. However, the massive material superiority of the Allies meant the strain placed on the outnumbered German pilots was now severe. At this time, the strength of German fighter units was 112 (65 serviceable) aircraft against the British muster of some 800 machines.[77] Marseille was becoming physically exhausted by the frenetic pace of combat. After his last combat on 26 September, Marseille was reportedly on the verge of collapse after a 15-minute battle with a formation of Spitfires, during which he scored his seventh victory of that day." Pilot Officer Bert Houle of No. 213 Squadron RAF; "He was an extremely skilled pilot and a deadly shot. It was a helpless feeling to be continually bounced, and to do so little about it."

@@Citadin Being outnumbered against weak opposition means you have opportunities to kill as many as you want, so it's not a disadvantage for Wehraboo stats wankers. 109 F-4 can engage and disengage at will from Hurricanes and P-40s, even the tropicalised "baby" Spit Mk V (worst Spitfire variant), which started appearing late into Africa can't catch an F-4, unless it's an ace like Beurling who can surprise you and snipe nazi heads from 800 yards. Btw Beurling would have around 3500 kills if he had the same kind of target rich environment for 5 years as he had in Malta. Those spitfires could have been p40s or hurricanes. Do you know how germans counted their kills? The had to be seen by other pilots. So Marseille actually shot down more planes than he claims, cause some kills weren't seen by other pilot. At the end: If Marseille didin't shoot down some of those planes he still has about the same he claims to have, cause some of his kills weren't counted cause they couldn't be confirmed. The Spitfire Marseille claimed could not be P 40, there were none in the Battle of Britain. I know how the Luftwaffe said they counted their kills but In the 1990's the German archives made available microfilm rolls of wartime records, not seen since January 1945. These showed that while in theory the Luftwaffe did not accept a kill without a witness, which was considered only a probable, in practice some units habitually submitted unwitnessed claims and these sometimes made it through the verification process, particularly if they were made by pilots with already established records. In theory the Luftwaffe did not accept shared claims, but it happened. In theory each separate claim should have referred to a particular aircraft, but in practice some victories were awarded to other pilots who had claimed the destruction of the same aircraft. It looks as if the Germans lied and many people believed the lies.

His strict adherence to this discipline is what enabled him to strike and disengage swiftly with the speed that he gained from said tactic. As a result, the enemy is unable to catch up to him, which links to how he never lost a wingman.

I have a problem with those German flying geniuses. An old friend whose brother was a Spitfire Pilot 42/3 asked for a posting to bombers because being a fighter pilot was so boring. In fact he became a Douglas Boston pilot and post war a schoolteacher in Kent. He was not alone , a Malta Spitfire pilot volunteered for overseas posting for the same reason, adding that you could complete a full tour and never see a German aircraft in the sky. It was often reported by RAF pilots that German groups would be seen in the distance and not bothering to attack. A Typhoon pilot on anti German tip and run raids caught up with a pair of Me109's and was credited for shooting both down, he said it was a surprise to himself as he thought they were both the same victim. But completing two tours over France, Holland, Belgium and Germany never again saw a German in the sky. Some of this is reminiscent of WW1 when the RFC started introducing new improved fighters to the skys , the Red Baron and his circus prefered to attack when the odds were heavily in their favour, numbers , height, sun , but till the end of the war were reluctant to cross British lines. Whilst I appreciate that in WW2 the German preoccupation was in the Eastern Front and 1944/5 against USAAF Bombers why did nobody in the west report in pure amazement of engaging one of those brilliant aces. Because it never happened.

The best story about him you forgot: when he flew through a Russian and a US group, both at different alt, he randomly shot at them and finally run away. Both sides didn't know from where the attack came and did start firing at each other ;) Or when he attacked a group of four Russian planes, probably all rookies, when he opened fire at the leader, he started panicking and got into a dive, but it was far to low for such a maneuver and crashed into a Forrest and all of his comrades followed him into death.
