Erich Fromm: Humanistic Ethics

A discussion of chapter 2 of Erich Fromm's Man For Himself: "Humanistic Ethics: The Applied Science of the Art of Living." I'll focus on the question of how Humanistic Ethics is possible--how we can avoid the two "traps" of Ethical Relativism and Authoritarian Ethics. I'll also discuss the two types of authority and the difference between subjective and objective norms.

It was very helpful but I wish Mattew could give the final answer for this big question of establishing authentic objective ethical norms without being drawn back to relativism and without these clutches of authoritarianism!

Ah! Perhaps some time I can make a video where I work through Fromm's own answer to that question. In the meantime, this section of the book helps set up readings of Kant and Aristotle for my Ethics students!
