Eric Metaxas: The Miracle of the Universe

Ғылым және технология

According to a nationwide survey, more than two-thirds of atheists and one-third of agnostics believe that “the findings of science make the existence of God less probable,” while nearly half of self-identified theists believe “the findings of science are neutral with regard to the existence of God.” But what if there is another option? What if the discoveries of science actually lend support to belief in God?

The most important issue in the entire universe is the fact that there is a Creator and that each and every human being will meet Him one day. Everything else is irrelevant.

I understand the sentiment, but you're off just a little. Not irrelevant, but all relevance is in relation to that fact. How we live and what we believe isn't irrelevant, it's specifically relevant to how it affects our relationship with our creator.

A colleague once asked me if I buy Lotto tickets--I said I contribute to the pool at work, not because of any hope of winning, but more because if the pool happens to win I don't want to be the guy still at work. He laughed at me, saying that I, like everybody else in the office, was delusional--did I know that the odds of winning were one in about 34 million? I know he's a strong evolutionist, so I asked him what were good odds--to which he just laughed. I asked him whether the odds of one in ten to the power of a hundred were good. At this point I got a frown--and had the concept of odds explained to me. I listened to his explanation and then asked, "So I guess the odds of one in ten to the forty thousandth power aren't good either?" He stared at me. Hadn't I heard anything he'd said? "It's just because the British astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle calculated that the random chance of the universe being fine-tuned to the extent that it is, and so support life, is one in ten to the forty thousandth power," I said. "And you, being a staunch evolutionist, seem to be quite happy with those odds." He now avoids me.

I attended an Arts/Music College in the '80s. While speaking with other "newbies" from various fields, we reached a consensus that our professors were encouraging us to throw out and challenge whatever we had learned about our chosen instrument or art focus. The assumption was, of course, creativity is the ultimate goal. For the arts, that idea may be a decent goal. But unfortunately and apparently this has transitioned into the culture as an underlying maxim, "Whatever is new is good! Whatever is old is bad!" [As if 'old ideas' about truth have an expiration date, after which they will begin to stink]. For example, homosexual sexual relations: "Um...yuck? But different! And therefore, new, and therefore good!" 'Traditional marriage' = Okay, but--old! Old is bad! Therefore, yuck! As Eric pointed out--some of these ideas are very unlivable when thought through--but whatever! We're onto the 'next new thing!' How fascinating that our hearts as humans desire something 'new'; and how God will ultimately answer this desire: "Behold, I am making all things new!", says the Lord.

From Saint Thomas Aquinas, "Fides quaerens intellectum." Some translate this as the mind of the faithful person seeks the truth. Fair enough...but not enough. I prefer the interpretation of Peter Kreeft (I hope I am faithful to his thought): Faith Informs The Intellect. It is a quantum theory of epistemology that proposes that the mind must be predisposed to absorb the truth: without such predisposition, the information is not absorbed.

After all, if God can create as He sees fit, He can produce life under very different conditions, should He desire to do so, and since there are virtually millions of planetoids in the Universe. Loved the presentation, I hope it gets millions of views.

Have you considered how many things in nature are here by replication … things that derive from a similar ‘parent’ source? Trees, plants, birds, mammals, stars even. It was only 100 years ago we deduced there was more than one galaxy! Why is it so incredulous to you that the universe could be similar to, say, a great maize plant … that started out as a tiny seed, contained within which was all the means to produce the cob. I would say that the possibility of our universe being just one in a field of many is very much higher on the list of candidates than that of a immaterial ‘god’ thing impregnating a peasant girl such that another ‘god’ thing was forced down a human birth canal, to subsequently pop out and walk on water, send things into pigs and ultimately to walk through a closed door without it opening and eat fish on the other side. You have to think about these things and ask yourself how likely that is. 😊

Eric may or may not be happy to know that Jehovah's Witnesses were knocking on everybody's doors sharing this very latest research...starting 1985 we were offering it for a pittance in a book called "Life- How Did It Get Here? By Evolution or Creation?" That book revolutionized my ability to talk to people in science class. Then in 1998 a more technical book was offered called "Is There a Creator Who Cares About You?" that featured the research on the fine tuning of the universe in detail. These days when most people are less likely to read an entire book, from 2010 the brochures "The Origin of Life-Five Questions Worth Asking" (informing on the DNA research known by then) and "Was Life Created?" were freely distributed by hand by millions of Christian JWs in multiple languages worldwide, trying to find people who wanted the truth. These campaigns prove that there actually was a grassroots force out there trying to spread knowledge of the most recent research on intelligent design in creation. We got your back, guys...

2011 I boldly went to the throne of grace the spirit of the Lord fell upon me I began speaking in an unknown tongue as the spirit gave the utterance the Lord of all creation spoke to my very being with absolute authority and power he said: "I created everything, everything created, I created---hills." Fortunately I was taught the scriptures from my youth the Torah, Psalms and the Prophets that testify of Yahshua. If you have accepted the Lord as your personal savior there is more go back to the book of Acts and get what they have. Please read Acts 2:38 covenant repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit for this is the promise of the Father to you to your children to those that are far off even as many as the Lord our Elohim shall call.

I am a theist who enjoyed Carl Sagan & Neil DeGrasse's shows and I still agree that we are made of the same 'star stuff', but it gets simpler, as God would want it. The basis of physics is the magnet. If we look at magnets, we can see it has a trinity of it's own. That trinity is positive (+) neutral (n) and negative (-). We cannot see the negative or positive forces because they are invisible. When the two combine, they become neutral. In other words, we do not see the + and - parts of the magnet without the neutral to hold them together. Similarly, all things we call neutral includes all matter, whether it's trees, people, rock, oxygen and everything else. They may have small or large electrical + & - charges, but for all practical purposes it's neutral. All neutral things form where + and - intersect. We as neutrals are caught squarely between the + & -, in theology good (+) and evil (-).

I am definitely a theist, but I cannot help but reject the anthropic principal as evidence of God. My thought process goes like this, in a simplified manner: a) Our universe seems to have hundreds, thousands, or even millions of constants, laws, distances, forces, and other variables set precisely for the success of life. b) Earth, in particular, seems to possess everything necessary for a multiplicity of life, including that of Homo sapiens. c) A random process managing to get all of the countless variables precisely right at just the right time to allow human life to thrive seems about as close to impossible for our human brains to comprehend. d) No matter how unlikely, the chance of the universe ending up with exactly the prerequisites for long-term advanced life would never have reached null. e) As we are here to discuss this fascinating issue, we must fall into the set of “just right” variables that support complex life. No matter how vanishingly rare a set of initial circumstances, life will find it.

Dear Mr. Eric Metaxas thank you so much for the efforts you put out there I learned a lot and still learning from you, and you are so freken funny I prefer watching you than Bill Bur, I know you probably won't read this but never the less am gonna write it maybe someone will read it and know the absolute truth. I agree with most of what you said, but you said at the min 20:29 that god said "|God said whatever is TRUE I want you to go with that even if it was uncomfortable, right" It sounded odd, to be honest. (God)Jesus Crist said "I am the Way, TRUTH, and Life" nobody comes to the Father except through me, who have the sun have the life, don't you think that we should include him of what gives meaning to life for all dispersed people that listen to who have the WORD. Jesus is the Bible and the Bible is Jesus and he is the good news. the only one who pleases God and the only one that could possibly be a sheep, a whole sacrifice to our sin's, we love and are sinners but he "A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he sends forth judgment unto victory." that's why only "through Jesus Crist believe in God the creator" we will be justified and that's why he came to this world and not because we can belive of unexperienced GOD the unseen, and save ourselves, but the Church's and Catholic church at the head of them forged the word of God and made it that through our beliefs we can be saved and we are back to Cane and Able, my work can please you god but not your solution Jesus Crist, and they removed Jesus Christ from the equation and they mention him occasionally with all the Saints and Righteous. there is no righteous but GOD JESUS said. 1-0

I don't think that is the aim of the atheist to disprove the existence of a deity, rather, it is up to the one who makes the assertion to prove said assertion. There is this example of a cosmic teapot for example floating in space… You can say you believe in it but of course you've never seen it because it's so small but you *know* and you *feel* that it's out there. I cannot disprove its existence because it would require infinite knowledge that i don't possess. You're making the claim that it does exist so you need to back up that claim.

Oh so true Eric! I am reminded in Romans 1 of the following: Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. Rom 1:19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Rom 1:20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

The question is why nobody ever said anything? Why people shied away from knowing the truth? It could be because the truth might have required their lives to stay within boundaries like no casual sex ??

The reason the truth is hidden is that the Bible reveals that God's enemy Satan is controlling the entire world since the rebellion in Eden... Barring a special stint of rulership the Creator involved himself in with the ancient nation called Israel. He did that so he could fulfill a promise he made to provide a Messiah. Anyway if you read Luke 4:6 and parallel accounts, it is evident that Satan controls the governments and all the accouterments of human society, including media, commerce and even religion. Is that ringing any bells for you?

I would like to say regarding miracles that not only are they a factual and I won’t say common experience but I will say widely experienced phenomena; they are an essential experience in the life of a Christian. God is real and powerful He is interested in us to the point that we are called His children, that He would suffer the cross on our behalf. Not only does scripture repeatedly say we who are His hear Him common sense demands it…… What Father doesn’t speak to their child? So then faith comes by hearing and hearing ……what is that and hearing? By the word of God. For the most part when I have communication with those claiming Christianity scripture is the word of God they identify here……again a logical examination of that assumption proves it to be an impossibility and I will take the time here to make that case. There are two claims in scripture by Paul that I think address this question concerning the role or use of scripture…..why did God give us a bible? King James Version 2Tim.3 Verses 16 to 17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Note what he did not sight that it was useful for…..conversion, salvation. It is a narrative written to and for the person already a child of the Most High. 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Salvation proceeds wisdom and as such cannot come from any text even if that text is inspired. So the first miracle anyone will experience is a personal encounter with God, by which they become alive spiritually. They receive eyes to see ears that can hear a new mind a new birth that we call faith. Now to my miracle this is one of many and as I look back I see God is always making a point when He works a miracle in someone’s life. This one took place when I was eighteen. I was working had purchased my first car, had a great looking girlfriend and went for a night on the town…. We drove to the city for a movie. This young lady was a beauty and I enjoyed being seen with her but she was not someone I enjoyed otherwise. She was selfish, childish, and entitled. I want to say looking back now as a much older man I have a very different view. After the show as we headed back to the car as I searched my pockets for the key, my heart sank……no key??? Where is it? Did I lose them? How/Where….Did I remember to take them out of the ignition???? No….all the while she was chattering, but while I knew she was speaking it was just a distant echo, my mind was working the problem and had become fixed on the answer that I must have left my keys in the car. Now I had to get there to know was I correct. My pace quickened and I think she assumed I was intending to get there ahead of her to open the door. I reached the car a moment ahead of her and sure enough there were the keys; doors locked, her bearing down on the situation and me contemplating the berating that would soon come. Oh God my mind called out how could you let me be so stupid…..lol all these years from Adam and not much changes….it was this woman you gave me. What, I asked, am I going to do now? In the same moment the young lady in question had also reached the car and was I don’t think curious works nor demanding but something between the two….why isn’t the door open what are you doing? God was in my other ear answering my question ….Go to that bush and get the hanger I left there for you and you will be able to open the door…… She had without my responding surmised the problem. Great I heard her say YOU locked the keys in the car, in the same moment I had said to God awesome, Your awesome thank you, and spun on my heals heading for the bush. There where several to choose from, I was thinking which one, but thought how could I chose the wrong one…. I already knew which one and as I was realizing that and I was already moving toward it her voice brook in again saying what are you doing now…where are you going? I stopped she had to be considered now as my crises had been dealt with, she did deserve a reply….to that bush to get the hanger that’s there and I will open the door I said quite matter of fact to which she asked again I won’t say sarcastically or with total….there was a kind of….. have you entirely lost your mind hidden there, but not mockingly it had a hint of actual concern….do you think she continued there is a hanger under every bush in the city???? I don’t know about every bush I replied but there is one under that bush and off I went. Looking back on that evening I don’t remember the show we saw, but the look on her face as I made my way back with that hanger. I think she must have been wondering if I had planted it. But that would be too fantastic to believe still how could I know it was there? I didn’t give it much of a thought at that time it didn’t seem the least strange that there would be a hanger there but since I have considered it and she was more right in that moment than I ever gave her credit for being how does a hanger end up under a bush in the middle of the city? It wasn’t my first miracle nor my last, its not the biggest, best, or my favourite, it’s not the one that most informed me as a son of God, but it was one that showed me God has my back even if I could have just taken a bus home…. Then there will be people who ask why suffering then? Why rapes and babies dieing? When I was young for many years God was in my view though I never voiced that view a sugar daddy…. I think a lot of people think that’s His proper place in creation. I’m a grand father now many times over and no one would ever accuse me of being a parents that spoiled his kids. There were times I helped them though when it might have been better for them to learn a lesson. At times just from pity at times because I understood they were not ready to learn that particular thing anyway and the lesson would be wasted and pointless. After all I have seen of God not once could I ever have questioned Him as a dad. No one in my life has ever loved me the way He does, and sure I have suffering at times but He is still God, nothing changes that. As a dad I would love to give my kids everything but not a bike if I knew they would take it into the road and be run down, but lots of kids get bikes and get run down…..those parents just didn’t know it would be their child. What if they had and all the other kids had bikes but their mom and dad always said no….. We are not god and we should stop trying to be.
