Eric Clapton: A Tale Of Two Tones

We very rarely get an opportunity to get a Fender Custom Shop Eric Clapton Strat Masterbuilt by Todd Krause in the video, as they don't tend to stick around for too long. So we jumped at the opportunity when one came through the door this week.
Seeing this opportunity we decided to put together approximations of two iconic Eric Clapton rigs; one from the late 60s with a 60th Anniversary '60 Les Paul and a Dr Z Remedy, and one inspired by Clapton’s rigs of the late 80s into the 90s, using the Clapton signature Fender Stratocaster with a Soldano SLO-100.
It was a lot of fun to take some artistic licence with these guitars creating tones inspired by Eric Clapton, we think both rigs are fantastic and both have complete unique characters.
Let us know in the comments below which one was your favourite of the rigs put together.
If you are interested in any of the gear used then make sure you act fast because we're sure they wont hang about for long!!

Clapton with a Gibson has always been my favorite tones of his. The Fender just says “just calm down so I can rock you politely and get to bed at a reasonable hour.”

The Clapton Strat has the most powerful Humbucker sound of all guitars. However When the boost is at 0 there is still 12 DB boost, so you can never play single coils with it. Why They call it Stratocaster I dont know. The pick ups on the Clapton Strat are Humbuckers. The vintage Noiceless.pick ups are Stacked coils which is the same as humbuckers. Only that the pick ups are above each other instead of beside each other. Still a Humbucker. If you want the most powerfull Humbucker guitar awailabe this is for you. If you want the classic Stratsound this is a big big big No No. You cannot play single coil sounds on the Clapton Stratocaster as the lowest boost is 12 ( a pretty powerful Humbucker sound. The 25 DB boost is the most powerfull Humbucker sound you can get in a guitar.

The Clapton signature Stratocaster is 17 timmes möre powerful Tham s Gibson Les Paul. The Clapton signature Stratocaster has Stacked Humbuckers and an incredible 25 mod boost. A Gibson Les Paul has at maximum 12 DB mod boost. The Clapton signature Stratocaster has 12 DB mod boost With the boost off because of its stacked Humbuckers. As Humbucker power increases the double With Evert 3 DB mod boost a 15 DB mod boost Guitar has double the Humbucker power of a 12 DB mid boost Guitar. A 18 DB mid boost Guitar has 4 Tones the Humbucker power of a 12 DB mid boost Guitar. A 21 DB mod boost Guitar has 8 times the Humbucker power of a 12 DB mod boost Guitar and a 24 DB mod boost Guitar has 16 Tones more Humbucker power Than a 12 DB mod boost guitar. At 25 DB mid boost the Clapton signature Stratocaster is 17 Times more powerful Than a Gibson Les Paul Humbucker wise. And off Course the Clapton signature Stratocaster is the absolute mist powerful Humbucker Guitar in the sorls. Nothibg even comes close. Clapton started playing Stratocasters in 1974, hus earlier solo records were recorded Witherspoon s Gibson Les Paul ( see page 179 in hus self biography) by 1982 Clapton was fes up Witherspoon the Stratocaster. And Signed Witherspoon a Company Called Strings and Things. A year or 2 later Fender offers Clapton the biggest amount ever to sign With Fender. Clapton answers ” If you can make me the absolute most powerful Humbucker Guitar in the world I sign Witherspoon Fender ”. Fender succession Building the absolute most powerful Humbucker Guitar the workshop has ever sen and Clapton signs With Fender. Tjats the Guitar Clapton has played sinne early 1986 and became the Clapton signature Stratocaster in 1988. Clapton spes not see the Guitar as a Stratocaster and he shouldnt as a Stratocaster is a singlecoil Guitar Witherspoon bo boost at all. The Clapton signature Stratocaster is still today the absolute most powerful Humbucker Guitar in the world. Nothing even comes close. Clapton says he played a Stratocaster for 8 to 11 years. From 1974 to December 1985 bit has to Seduction the tine he was under Contract With Strings and Things hence the 8 to 11 years.

The early days of Clapton with the Les Paul (or later an ES335 in Blind Faith or when he did the From The Cradle album ) through a Marshall will always be my favorite tone of his. His later Strat tone improved (in my opinion) greatly, when he started using his Signature guitar with the active mid-boost.

That strat and soldano sounds amazing. I have seen EC over 30 times live across a bunch of years and I always liked that set up the most. Having Knopfler riding shotgun on that tour in 88-89 was amazing.

My favourite Clapton tone was the strat through a Fender twin that he used for Derek and the Dominos. Very late 60s early 70s. Cream was done by 68.

Great to see the use of an SLO. The late 80s early 90s Clapton tone showed excellent subtle use of FX care of the Pete Cornish rack system. Distinguish choice guys...

Enjoying the two tones series. It's sad though that everyone always ignores his mid 70s cleaner tone era, which is my favourite.

Contrary to a lot of the other comments I really like it when you stop and explain what you are doing rather than just shredding blues with no context. Thanks for the videos, been really enjoying the up-coming channel of late.

I'm not a massive Clapton fan (don't get me wrong, he's great, I just never took a deep dive into his work), so I was shocked to hear that he played through a Soldano in the 90's. I've always considered those to be hard rock/ metal amps. Great video and playing!

You need to get a pre 2000 Clapton Strat with Lace Sensors. They are quite different from the Vintage noiseless.

Absolutely loving the Les Paul + Remedy set up. You get so much control by just adjusting the tone and volume knobs. Great playing man and killer tone!
