I met Cantona outside Croydon Crown Court as he was there after he kicked that Palace fan who fully deserved the kick. Swerved work that day when I found out him and Incey were at the court. Waited for hours to get a glimpse of my football hero. As he was leaving court after the verdict Cantona walked out and was immediately mobbed by the press. He proceeded to walk in my direction and I thought to myself now is the one and only time I might get to shake his hand. So I stood my ground whilst reporters were on him like flies, fought my way directly towards Cantona. For a brief moment he stopped as I stuck out my hand and I said something like “nice one Eric we support you” to which he looked at me square in the face and said “Sank you” (French accent for thank you) I’ll never forget that day. He’s a true legend, was then and always will be. Red forever. ❤ Thanks for the video and a reminder of what a gifted and unique footballer he was. One of a kind.

No fan deserves a kick from a player. Regardless. Cantona will only be remembered as a thug. He was lucky to get away with the ban that he had. If it happened today, he'd be jailed and rightly so.

If we had stats from back then on how many times he was the 3rd last player to touch the ball before a goal he would be regarded as a much MUCH better player than he is currently. He was the focal point in one of the best teams to ever grace a football pitch. Absolutely unbelievable player.

People like to talk s*** about Cantona’s stats and say he was overrated or underperformed in Europe. But just look at his league accomplishments. He won Ligue 1 with Marseille in 1988-89 and 1990-91, ending a 17-year barren spell (Marseille’s last title before this was in 1971-72). He then went to Leeds and won the English First Division in 1991-92, ending an 18-year barren spell (Leeds’ most recent prior title was in 1973-74, and they haven’t won a title since). Then, he famously moved to Manchester United and won four Premier League titles between 1992-93 and 1996-97, ending a 26-year barren spell. The reason why nobody at the time cared about Cantona “only” scoring 165 goals or underperforming in Europe was: a) We didn’t have the level of media coverage, statistical analysis, social media scrutiny, and over-saturation that we do now. All that stuff was genuinely less important than Cantona playing with flair and arrogance, being a leader, and a cultural icon. - stuff that’s difficult to quantify. I didn’t know Cantona’s actual stats when I was ten and I didn’t care. b) He did the most important thing, which was win. He had this weird ability to transform the fortunes of clubs he joined and end long periods without league success. He won seven top-flight league titles with three different clubs (incidentally the same as CR7) over a nine-year period, which is an insanely impressive “stat”, especially considering he was banned for 9 months during that window of time. And in each case, he did it at a club ending a long drought without league titles - he never went to a dominant club and got a fast-track to a medal; he himself was the transformative force.

It's not easy to say who the best is amongst all of them. But Cantona definitely ranks up there with the cream of the crop. His flair was just so majestical, the lay offs and the soft touches, and the angles wow...Beautiful. Thank you for the video. Would love to see one of Messi and CR7. The beautiful game 🤩.

The only other player i have seen with such comparitive influence on a team is Maradona with Napoli and Argetina. Happy to stand corrected though.
