Playing both ways is a necessity for Türkiye. This is Turkey's value to the West. Türkiye has direct borders with Russia and Iran, so it has deep economic and cultural relations. If Türkiye had cut off relations with these two countries, the economy would have been much worse. The problem specifically in the economy is related to some stupidity and the legal system.

Erdogan is often seen as another authoritarian in the West, almost like Putin. Perhaps that is because he has been around as long, but also because he keeps winning against the odds. We get the hint that elections are unfair, perhaps due to media bias. So it is reassuring that the opposition can win. They aren't excluded or thrown in jail as Putin does.

As a Türk teenager I am so happy about this and I am really hopeful for my country againg. Next 3 or 4 years might be tough for us but after that everything‘s gonna be great I really believe that.

You missed another important point in regards to Erdogan's loss in the recent election; The trade with Israel, and YRP's rise related to this matter. YRP pulled a lot of votes from Erdogan.

Too many leaders around the world have been in power too long. There needs to be term limits and change to mitigate the damage left by bad policies. Too many bad short-term policies for selfish interests leaves long-term damage for future generations to struggle through

Almost 10 minutes and probably the best video to summarize the state of Turkiye at the moment. We have more hopes! I believe that Turkiye has potential to become a much better democratic nation than the west itself. It is because of its location and harmonization between west and east! We should start playing our 'BRIDGE' role and not make war cries over neighboring nations such as Greece, Syria, Iraq, Isreal and so on... We should also stop playing 2 sided in many cases (Russia and Ukraine). We should start playing our bridge role with a strong democracy. I believe, we have wisdom, experience, and maturity to reach this level! Fingers crossed!

I am a Turkmen origin Kurdish Alevi from Tunceli/Dersim and I love Atatürk very much too. Because Ataturk was never a racist. However, what he said was always misinterpreted. Ataturk did not use the word "Turkish" to describe a race. In those years, the words Turkmen/Turkoman or Oğuz, Yörük, Kızılbaş were used for Turk race. Ataturk used the word Turkish as a concept of citizenship. Turkish means equal; Turkomen, Kurdoman, Zaza, Circassian, Laz, Macır, Pomak, Assyrian, Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Arab, Nusayri etc. It included all races living in Turkey. Just like the word American. And Atatürk was not aware of the Dersim Massacre that started in the last months of 1938. In 1937, he had a written order saying "Nothing should be done that would harm civilians." Will Atatürk, a peaceful leader who treated even the occupying Australian, New Zealand and Greek soldiers with respect, order the massacre of his beloved Alevis of Turkmen origin from Dersim? Only people with malicious intentions believe this.

What next? For the next 4 years probably not much, but it does brighten things a little bit for those that had lost almost all hope. Also C is a J sound in Turkish. Pronounced Jeh Heh Peh. Imamoglu and Kilicdoroglu also don't have hard G sounds in them.

Honestly guys, if you do research do it properly. The main reason for the lira devaluation is the QE program, the financing of government spending by the central bank. MONEY PRINTING. As long as a government finances it self via the central bank you can hike interest rates, there will be lass and less impact, as the money supply grows not via loans, but rather by the printing press. No one really expected falling inflation, as long as there is no balanced budget.

There's a whole myriad of problems troubling the Turkish economy. Just about all of them can be traced to poor policymaking and we can thank AKP and it's voters for that. From government handouts basically made into policy to widespread corruption all the way up to interest rates, QE and overall poor financial decisions. Any real growth was/is in spite of Erdoğan and AKP. Turkey was lucky to have sound parameters for success, somewhat dampening the devastation caused by the obvious. Both long term and short term prospects have been/are being squandered at best and irreparably destroyed at worst. All to basically fill the pockets of one dinosaur and his cronies. But who can blame them when people willingly hand it to you because you mentioned God and can put up a good show.

Using religion as a shield can only go for so long. It can work as long as people are employed and working. But when people's pocket become empty the religion card doesn't work.

Not sure about that. Bare in mind that many of those who voted for CHP in this election are AKP-voters who just "loaned" their vote. The problem with CHP in the general and presidential elections is that they have to rely on the HDP and other parties, which the traditional voters are to afraid of.

Main problem of the Turkish politics is that the any party that rules over 2-3 terms, somehow becames the state-party and loses its connection from the ordinary citizens' everyday strugles and starts to act like they are the state itself. Inönü's CHP, Menderes' DP, Özal's ANAP and now Erdoğan's AKP. This pattern exist in Turkish politics regarldess of party and leaders political background.

Main problem is systemical Ataturk did not put any systemical railguards for governmental work,dictatoship and powering noncentral governmental structures. But all of these was because of necesities of that time. 1 because the country was new and it needed an authoratic central regime to put new changes fast and efficiently ,2 social democracy was a new concept so nobody knew how to integrate it properly. This wouldnt caused problem if Turkey stopped worshipping Ataturk and started to upgrade its political and governmental system over time but instead we tried to keep status quo so country needs to have authocratic power to move further or system will just collapse. But authocratic powers tend to corrupt really fast so it is a never ending cycle we will experience until the system changes properly.

@@exosproudmamabear558 İnönü's status quo and his party-state after Atatürk is understandable considering that happened during ww2, but the people I mentioned above that came power after him, really be able to came to power because they all critisized İnönü's party-state policies. But eventually they all ended up doing the same thing. Not only their political concept changed, but their values and ideas also changed. Özal for example started as liberal, he proposed to move away from unitary state to more multicultural one and changing country's name to Anatolia insted of Turkey, but when you look at his later term policies he was planning to invade and re-take Mosul for his Great Turkish State.. Erdoğan is also same, he is now, especially after the coup attempt, safe-guarding Atatürk's founding principles, even the secularism which he critisized a lot during his early career. No one would believe that if you told this 10 years ago but here we are now. Türkiye's imperial legacy and its foundation principles eventually funnels its govering mechanism to more authocratic side. A unitary nation state surrounded by its former subjects while majority of its public are extremely patriotic and culturally conservative. I believe this makes ruling parties to act according to nations founding priniples, since they become to see themselves the state itself after some time. @@yahuniye What a beautiful way to summarise it. I wouldnt be able to say this myself. Solution is indeed more nuanced and should be slow to implement or maybe it doesnt even exist because of the foundation of the country afterall. But I realised most governments who want to do a change have too idealistic ideas when they come into power in my opinion. Slight nudges to the right path would be much better. Trying to change a thing too fast would cause resistency and bouyancy. But this aproach although may work in some countries who have stabile enviroments ,Turkey's dynamic political enviroments due to geopolitical place may cause a huge problem to implement it. Especially when big powers jumble things up in middle east and causing a rift between the continents. It is really difficult to make small but constant changes in the right direction when you need to act quickly to solve a immidiate problems from outside of your country. Afterall you can control your country with a good system but controlling outside factors are pretty difficult.

He was elected because the 6-party opposition bloc couldn't create confidence in the eyes of the voters. The leaders of these parties contradicted each other and the voters thought "Woe to the country if these novices take the helm". In short, voters elected Erdoğan again just out of desperation, for the lack of a reasonable alternative.

Erdogan himself created this personality cult that implies his absolution of any kind of wrongdoing. As a person who experienced this earthquake in a province that worst hit, his supporters often said that main opposition blockaded the acts of infrastructural renewal of the city, which, i must say, is the truth but opposition has its rightful reasons as well, so erdogan couldnt do much legally. They also claim in response to accusations of delayed arrival of disaster response units and relief volunteers with lines like "disaster area is huuuuge, so how can he be everywhere at the same time." The last reason why he re-elected, especially in disaster-hit areas, is the most brain fart one. People in those areas said that, with underlying reason of fear of abondenment, he is the only one that can build our homes and cities again so we should vote for him blabla.

Oh, also, the most commonly used saying in favor of erdogan is that his opposition, especially kilicdaroglu, is working in cooperation with kurdish hdp-dem party, who has some sort of ties with terrorist organisation pkk so this reason came before anything else in eyes of most of the conservative turkish and kurdish voter.

Overall, pretty good summary. Still, like many other summaries, it neglects multiple (and possibly) critical points. The dynamics of local and parliamentary elections in Turkey are quite distinct. While voters may refrain from going to the ballot at local elections due to various reasons (such as a corrupt mayoral candidate), they certainly don't miss the parliamentary or presidential elections. In this case, local elections do not accurately provide a forecast for the next presidential or parliamentary elections. On the other hand, I believe you should've analyzed the voter turnout. A significant portion of the opposition's mayoral candidates won despite receiving less number of votes, but having a higher percentage of the votes. This was due to the lower than usual voter turnout. It seems that the ruling party's supporters chose to protest/punish the party for poor performance in the recent years along with quite idiotic selection of candidates (some of whom are known to be corrupt, ties with criminal organizations etc.). You may ask why choose local elections to protest the ruling party. I believe the answer is quite simple: it's less risky for those who usually vote for the ruling party. The stakes are always higher in presidential or parliamentary elections. Meanwhile, if a clearheaded and diligent candidate, who is a member of the opposition, becomes the mayor, it may still benefit the ruling party's supporters.

I believe you will need to mention his name more often from now on. "Imamoglu" has actually soft g (g with a breve) which is not really pronounced. Think of it as = Imamoulu (o pronounced a bit longer). You can also check Google translate for the correct pronunciation.

I just don't see how a fractured opposition could win better than a united even though they would be ideologically very different. There is no way Fidesz in Hungary or AKP in Turkey can be ousted without a unified opposition. They are just too big compared to any other party. In Hungary they also lack a conservative but more pro-european party like most center-right parties in other countries. Same thing in India, INC knows it can't beat the BJP alone anymore. They were in power for decades and people remember that, either youn need to unify with other opposition parties, or you need a completely new big tent party.

I don't know about the others, but Erdoğan buys especially the centre-right opponents that he can buy with money. He somehow leaves out of the game what he cannot buy. For example, in 2008, a centre-right leader who had the potential and courage to rival him died in a very suspicious helicopter crash. Some of them were accused of fraud, their companies were seized and their parties were closed. Some were eliminated by sex tape conspiracies. Some of them are kept under control in a way we don't yet know, meaning they are allowed to engage in "limited dissent." Full control of 24 national media organizations is in the hands of Erdoğan and by exploiting "religion" and all kinds of values by Erdoğan's target audience, the ignorant-conservative 45% of the population (he stole the election he won with 52% and steals 5%+ votes in every election), He manipulates by telling every lie. Under these conditions, the opposition's job is really difficult, and since last year's election, we see that some seemingly opposition leaders are working for Erdoğan and deliberately misleading the opposition.

Take the example of a Coalition of parties A-B-C If a voter despises party C but usually Votes for A then there is a chance he doesn't vote for the ABC coalition at all. However if they run separetely and then that doesn't happen and they still have the option for form a coalition afterwards.

They made huge cheats in the abroad elections. I have seen the statistics,it was abysmal in many countries counted votes were higher than the voter number which is impossible if you didnt add extra votes.

I think it is also worth mentioning that the Turks outside Turkey cannot vote in local elections and that also had an impact on the result as they are predominantly pro-Erdogan. Anyways, so happy for my country❤

The percentages don't tell the whole story. CHP gained control of 35 cities, predominantly urban areas, while AKP now holds 24 cities, mostly rural areas. Therefore, the opposition now controls most of Turkey's economy.

Kilicdaroglu has lost more than 10 elections. NO ONE wanted him to be the candidate, not even the majority of CHP supporters. They didn't announce the candidate until the very last minute, everyone was hoping that they were going to either put Imamoglu or Yavas as the candidate, and then Kilicdaroglu put himself forward, and refused to change. Even the second biggest opposition party left the coalition because of that, they did so many independent polls that all showed Kilicdaroglu was the weakest candidate in the country, much below other candidates, even below mayors. But he refused to step down. In the end, the iyi party agreed to come back to the table on the condition that kilicdaroglu make Imamoglu and Yavas his advisors. But it was too late, even though there are/were millions of former AKP voters who wanted to have a change, there was no way on earth they would ever vote for Kilicdaroglu, he is like the antichrist to them. So they voted for Erdogan again. After the defeat, Kilicdaroglu outright refused that this was a defeat, and he paraded around like he had accomplished a lot. Boasting that he had got 47% of the votes, and how this was a major victory (he had never had this many votes before in his life). Everyone said he should resign but he has no shame so he refused. It wasn't until CHP themselves kicked him out that he finally stepped aside. And the new guy who replaced him is pretty much the same person, just in a different body. CHP will never learn. They will lose the next general election as well.
