Really good point about the stick tang on a billhook. I have never considered my billhook to be weak at the handle join and yet it's common to think that a stick tang knife is inferior to a full tang. Good feather sticking with that big blade!

I think a stick tang absorbs shock better and that they have a bad reputation because people try to smash through knotty logs with a huge batton and a small knife that is not designed for that. That's my opinion at least. Thanks for watching mate, have a great weekend.

Having had to construct a hunting blind with nothing but a 4" hunting knife and an even smaller pocket-knife I keenly appreciate the utility of a blade like this, and made one for myself. It's extremely useful in outdoor pursuits.

Watched your nice review again, just for fun! Good stuff Tim! I Already bought the knife like 5 months ago. But only now have really started to use this. Have been carrying it all the time now outside my Savotta rinkka, over a month. I really like the lightness of it(almost half the weight of Skrama). Also surprisingly nimble. With a nice grind; good feathersticks too! At first I wondered if Im going to use this. No need to wonder again. Actually digging it!

Yes they are awesome aren't they, expecially if you are one of these strange people who don't like axes 😂. I don't have mine anymore, I did a trade. I have a Poropuukko wich is almost identical (unfortunately that is back in England). I also have some other leukus. But I really like the Lauri blade. I will probably end up buying another one. Seriously thinking of getting the tuohitako too.

That poropuukko looks good. I like that that the upper part of the handle is longer. The same design is in Iisakki Järvenpää Leuku we have in our summer house( It doeas have superior handle). But thats the only negative I can think of. Steel has held also very nicely, I just trust these Lauri blades..@@KuukkeliBushcraft

@@OldForestBushcraft it really does seem a bit of a shame that there is one big manufacturer of blades for most of the small knife makers. But they do it so well. The blade blanks also are exceptional value for money and they are at least made in Finland.

I have one which appears to have the same blade, though I think mine is "Wood Jewel". I used it to process wood when cutting a tree back, and found it chops far more effectively than it's light weight would suggest. It comes with a much smaller puukko in the same sheath. I think the combination cost about £ 70 - a bargain!

Yes wood Jewell also use Lauri blades. Actually made not so far from here. Several manufacturers here in Finland make near enough the same knife with the same blades. All of them chop suprisingly well for the weight yet are also better at finer tasks than you might expect for such a large knife. Very good all round tool. @@KuukkeliBushcraft For cutting the tree back I used a saw to take off the larger branches, and the Leuku to take off the smaller ones and tidy the logs up, but it worked surprisingly well at chopping logs up so they would fit in my wood burner. I have never been to Finland, but find your films fascinating - I really feel I am walking round your area with you. Eagerly awaiting the next one!

Yea man those sort of tangs are fine, not like you're going to chop a tank in half or something(or even attempt it). Is one awesome big knife mate, I remember seeing it in your last video I believe when you were trying to snap those saplings down lol. Ok cheekyness aside it does look awesome mate! The SRK is built like a tank. I hope you understand what I was doing to that sapling 😂I am starting to doubt it🤔. I believe this is the knife that I used to cut the sapling in the video. You really need to get it in time man, Its a beauty and so well made. @@WaltRevenJr I meant twisting it to break the fibers and make it supple so it could be used for lashings. Did the same for all of the other lashings when I turned it into a smoker. Works better with willow but the willow here tends to be only about 2 feet tall.

Theres some stuff back at the lil camp spot we have used to try and make lashings with but it was a big fat fail lol. I think it was that autumn olive bush stuff. Not much grows here minus the usual trees and such like oak, bushes or sycamore trees(awesome stuff there though).

Yes, i will go, it is my dream, it is mystical. When i was 10 years old, my mother who is swedish , gave me a book, "dans la toundra de Varanger", i wanted to be one of those who are leaving by fishing and hunting, 30 years later, my dream is still the same. Thank you a d take care👍🤗

I put clear nail polish between the junction of the booster and blade . Keeps water , blood etc. from seeping into the handle . Olive oil is used on the blade . I have a number , great knives ! Grizz 🐻

The nail polish is a great idea. I rarely bother oiling my blades as I rarely get more than a bit of surface rust that wears off with use. I don't live in a very wet environment. Thanks for watching Grizz, have a fabulous weekend.

@@KuukkeliBushcraft .......routine maintenance of my equipment was drilled into me by the U.S. Army . Take care of your kit and when you need it , it will take care of you ! My gear is serviced every week or so , depending on the use , weather , environment etc. It is a shame to see good leather or steel ruined because of neglect . A little bit of wax or oil goes a long way ! Cheers ! Grizz 🐻

I have an almost identical Leuku (even down to the baked birch handle) from a maker near where I stayed in Finland in 2008, it's taken a beating over the years but never let me down. I've handled most of the popular commercial Leukus but I still think the Lauri blades are the best. Love the billhook comment too, stick tangs have been good enough for swords for centuries too! When you are chopping for a long time (and over many years) the last thing you want is a completely rigid tool that will transmit all the shock into your arm.

Regarding the spine of the blade, being factory made these Lauri blades are stamped from sheet steel and no attention is given to finishing the spine; this means they are rather rough and often rounded along one edge, filing the square is fairly easy to do and makes the much better for scraping tasks and use of a ferro rod etc.

I think I should talk more about tangs in a video sometime. I don't know, I have touched on the subject a few times. I think if you use a quality tool for its intended purpose it won't let you down. If you try to batton through a knotty log with a mora classic it will probably break at the tang, because that's not what it's for. Both shock absorbtion and weight are definitely on the plus side for the rat tail.

Literally just a couple of seconds on the belt sander at work outs a good 90 degree edge on all of my work knives (that are also occasionally bushcraft knives too). Like I said in the video I believe. The leuku is unlikely to ever be my only knife. It generally rides in my pack rather than on my belt so I can use my other knife with the ferro rod. Even if I lose that I can use a tin opener or something. Maybe even the striker on my ferro rod 🤣. Going back to the riding in my pack , that is one thing I neglected to mention, a leuku can be a pain banging around on your belt. Thanks again buddy.

I have this version and a Stromeng 8”, I actually prefer the grip on the Stromeng but the grind on the Erapuu might be better, Stromeng has a ahort grind but honestly it’s done great, the blade is a little bit thinner too than the Erapuu.

The thin blade can be both an advantage and a disadvantage depending on what you are cutting. It will always be lighter though wich is good if you are carrying it any distance. As for the grind that is something that can be adjusted although I do like the higher grind that is common among Finnish knives. Something for those that complain about a stick or rat tail tang... almoat all swords have the exact same mounting, no one calls them weak.

Good point, I think a rat tail with a wooden handle absorbs more shock. Of course a poorly made rat tailed tang knife is weak or one that wasn't built for heavy use (something like a Mora classic).

Professional, well I can hardly claim to be that. Also I can't really talk about knives that I have not used. I can however recommend any leuku with Laurin Metalli blade (although the Wood Jewel ones may have some fit and finish issues). So Woodsknife, Ahti, Eräpuu, Poropuukko (to give our local knife maker a mention). They are all quite similar. If you want something really traditional then Strömeng although you may want to give it a little higher grind, a convex higher grind would work well. If you want something really nice there are many small custom manufacturers using Puronvarsi blades. Might have something by Puronvarsi on the channel soon. Roselli Leukus are generally well thought of, I only have their little carpenters puukko (wich is a great little knife) but I have had my eyes on the leuku for a while. As I said I can't wholeheartedly recommend something that I haven't used. Price for performance though I think the Eräpuu is really hard to beat although you may want to sharpen the spine to use with a ferro rod (as with most of these knives). If using with a ferro rod is really important to you, definitely avoid the Puronvarsi blades as the spine tends to be round. If it doesn't have to be a leuku or particularly traditional, he Terava Skrama is a great workhorse and will perform all of the same tasks. Thanks for watching buddy.

I have a question about handles on leukus, as the one i have is the first one ive owned. Its a YP Taonta and i cant quite get my hand around the handle. It feels too big, but im told they tend to have thick handles. I have rather big hands. But i cant make my thumb and the tip of my middle finger touch around the handle. Is that normal?

They do tend to have chunky handles but not to that extent. Nowadays YP seem to only make blades as far as I am aware. They did used to sell a finished leuku. Despite this I am wondering is it possible that just the blade is YP Taonta? I have seen many beginner knife makers making overly thick handles. In fact my first knife handle was very fat. I would probably thin down the handle. The main issue then would be the sheath wich you may be able to wet form to fit. How is it to use? Not good I would expect. How wide is it around the ferrule at the top?

@@KuukkeliBushcraft yup, thats the model i bought, the finished YP from lamnia. Just seems a bit too fat. The middle of the handle is twice as wide at the ferrule is. May need to sand down the width of the handle a bit, ans wetform the sheath. The blade is amazing quality, its the handle that makes me reluctant to use it more. I appreciate the feedback, its hard to tell if something is right, when its the first one you've used. The one in the link you shared seems to have a more slender handle than mine.

It's definitely a good knife but due to the size I can't imagine which of my activities (boar skinning, fishing, camping) it would be useful for.

It's certainly not the best choice for a hunting or fishing knife (mind you I often use the back of my leuku as a priest when fishing). They are good for cutting small trees, harvesting fatwood and stripping bark. Also firewood prep. Might not be the best tool for everyone. An axe and a small knife would suit a lot of people better. Leuku handles do tend to be quite thick. Still seem to be comfortable to use though. Also will help to balance out the long blade a little. To be honest I hadn't really thought about it before but they are quite chunky. Thanks for watching Steve.

the problem with carbon knives is when you use leather sheaths and they are exposed to water,the leather retains the water like a spunge making the knife rust for days,synthetic sheaths dry faster.Leukus must have been very expensive back in the day,alot of steel,but but an axe would have no purpose in mountains and sami.

Synthetic materials are often more practical. Leather sheathes and wooden handle scales can be pretty bad with water (at least rat tailed tand knives don't arnt so problematic with swelling and warping ect. Not too worried about a bit of surface rust. Would seem wrong somehow to have a leuku in a kydex sheath. Thanks for watching my freind have a great weekend.
