The infected (zombies) in The Last of Us games have fungus growing in their brains which eventually starts to grow out of their heads & spread across the entire body making them either more easy or harder to kill depending on the mutation of the infected host. The 2nd stage (runners) & 3rd stage (stalkers) have heads that are softer & are easy to break, whereas the 4th stage (clickers), 4.5 stage (shamblers) & 5th stage (bloaters) have heads & bodies that are far more harder to break, especially with your bare hands, so a firearm or a high calibre is advisable

I think that should only apply to clickers and stalkers though. Those are the only infected that have been infected long enough that the growth has completely covered their heads. To break the average human neck it requires twice the force as the average weight of the human (approximately) so if its like a fit 400 pound powerlifter he may have the potential to break the neck of someone a quarter his size. Even then just casually flicking the neck to the left or right wont do the job.

A hyena's bite is so much more forceful than a dog's. They're what we call "bone-crushers." They eat the hooves, bones, and even the horns of carrion. If a hyena bites you, flesh is coming off and bones are shattering. A dog can break bones too, but the difference in power and size is huge.

One thing I kind of always wondered, is I've commonly had the 'headcanon' that in zombie games, some process of decomposition/fungification (in Last of Us' case) would make much of the body more weak. But at least in traditional decomposition, there's no way that really happens with _bone_ right? Unless it's a very, very long time? Mushrooms maybe, the fungus ending up spreading _through_ the bone and compromising the structure checks out with my surface-level knowledge of stuff.

and with the neck snapping thing, you can easily tear tendons and ligaments in someone's neck if you jerk it with about 20 to 30 Gs, or more, of force. 6:50 I'd imagine you get so many blunt force assault cases coming in over bladed assaults because people think "oh if I hit them with something blunt they wont die so its less severe", though, obviously, a hammer to the head can be just as deadly as a knife

Something that I actually want to mention is that it technically is possible to die from getting punched straight in the face. Right above our nose is a pressure point that, if it gets triggered, will cause someone’s brain to go unconscious. If that pressure point receives too much pressure all at once it’ll actually cause the entire brain(or at least most of the brain) to pretty much “shut down” temporarily. This can be lethal due to the fact that since the brain is shut down it’s not sending any kind signals to the major parts of the body during this time such as the lungs, heart, etc. This isn’t always the case though since the process is temporary, but since there’s no exact amount of time that this will go on for you would pretty much be in fate’s hands at that point.

what I was thinking when they were saying that your head would not explode when you hit them with your fist like that but the guys that were being hit where zombies so I thought that their skulls were deteriorated and probably like soggy cardboard at that point

I would like to point out that if you see someone getting struck in the back of the neck with a gun in a video game, it’s likely they were actually struck more towards the middle of the shoulder blades, as it’s likely to be mocapped to some capacity, and they’re trying to avoid injuring the actor. Afterwards they edit it to make it look more like they hit upwards, but the neck is about as high as they can go without it looking janky. A proper execution of that technique is slamming someone in the back of the head with the butt of a gun, as that should at the very least disorient whoever you just struck, and more often than not should induce temporary unconsciousness via blunt force trauma.
