Benton is like that gruff guy who hates cats, but then his family gets a kitten, and it chooses him to follow around, and then you find him lying on the couch with the kitten sleeping on his chest and he looks at you like "tell no one or I'll kill you"

Benton expresses his love for Carter, but quietly. It's easy for Carter, who cries and loves freely. But Benton is used to taking care of himself and supressing his emotions. When Benton freaks out when Carter was stabbed it really showed the viewer that Benton had priorities and emotions.

OF ALL THE RELATIONSHIPS THAT DEVELOPED ON ER I LOVED BENTON AND CARTER'S THE BEST💪🏽

I always loved the relationship between these two great actors.

I don’t even remember where I saw it. But Noah was telling the story of meeting Eriq when the show cast was being hired. Noah was 23 years old, nervous and was falling all over himself complimenting Eriq’s work. Eriq was very much like Benton, quiet and seemingly uninterested in this kid. “So I’m babbling on and on. Then I take a breath and say “La Salle is cool. Is that French? Are your ancestors French?” He said Eriq gave him the perfect ‘you idiot’ Benton tone. “It’s a slave name.” Maybe Eriq thought he’d go ahead and establish the characters’ relationship. They became the best of friends. During the break between the pilot getting made and the show being picked up and beginning to film the series the two of them went to Europe and had a great trip.

Benton knew that Carter was a good doctor, but didn't want Carter getting a fat head. It was his way of keeping Carter in check. Always to the end.

One of the best scenes in the show's run. Talk about all the couples or teams or relationships on the show...but for my money, Benton/Carter was the best of them all. That's one of the reasons why last night's episode was so good.

This is- by far- one of the best scenes in all of ER's 15 years. The Carter/Benton relationship was one of the best relationships the show ever had. I really wanted something like this scene for the two of them in last night's series finale... like Carter saying to Benton, "none of this would have ever been possible if you hadn't spent all those years teaching me."

When Peter smiled (I've only seen it twice) the world feels like a better place. Yes, he was an amazing 'tv doctor' but what an amazing actor Eric La Salle is. Still remember him popping up on Coming to America. But as Doctor Peter Benton he is just fabulous.

wish i had had more teachers who challenge me to do better, Peters "no you're not, but keep trying" is just beautiful

The perfect send off for Benton. Theres so much said in this scene without ever actually saying anything. Their relationship is the best heterosexual relationship on this show.

The piano piece throughout this scene adds a mesmerizing melancholy to an already emotional scene.

He came back when he was needed most.

I don't know which episode it was but it was late in the series. Peter actually called Carter, "John". I almost spit out my cereal when I watched it on Pop.

Benton was a very "old school" soul with his own walls and everything else that went along with it. Carter was a perfect student for Benton because he was the sweet to maybe not his sour, but definitely his edge. Benton's character was in my view among the most important characters in the duration of that show because of how tough, determined, callous, insensitive but loving he was. Him taking a tag from Carter before flying with him to rehab demonstrated how much he loved Carter even if he couldn't always verbalize it.

I think Romano Is mad not at Benton for leaving but at himself for letting Benton go

To be fair Romano tried to adjust his schedule for Benton but what Benton wanted was just too much. Romano respected the hell out of Peter.

The dynamics and chemistry between Benton and Carter was awesome!! ER was fantastic because over the seasons we watched the characters develop and grow. From the beginning we observed the raw, naive and inexperienced Carter, under the tough and harsh mentoring of Benton.... develop into a truly remarkable doctor. And that scene captured their ‘Goodbye’ perfectly!! Carter again shows his sensitivity and emotions and Benton remains stoic and cold. However, we saw some emotion in his face for Carter. One of the few times he showed to Carter that he does appreciate him. A wonderful series.

Benton saved Carter’s life twice. When he was stabbed and then when he had complications to replace his kidney that were caused because of that initial attack.

i loved the early days.Carter the clown and benton the moody supervisor:-)

In the very last season when all the OGS come back you’ll see that Benton still wears the necklace!! So sweet

As much as Benton was a hard arse he had a good heart

Away from the camera's.....these two are actually VERY GOOD FRIENDS......I found this out AFTER the ER Series had ended. I Smiled and moved on to another Show to get involved with.....and there have been many.....BUT....ER was there when TV really was MUST SEE.

When the show first started I absolutely hated Benton, but as his character developed I came to understand him and grew to really like and admire him. Eriq did a fantastic job in that role. Glad he came back in the final season.

Only thing colder than that weather is Benton’s interiors.

Thia is what I miss about med and police shows. The grittiness and just realism feelings. New shows is just too polished and doesn't feel same as ER and NYPD Blue ,Chicago Hope and Law and Order.

romano would never say it but he did like benton he knew he was a great surgeon like him and in a way you can romano respected his decision.

Carter totally loves Benton. And Benton loves Carter. I think in a non direct way this is how House/Wilson are. House loves Wilson but won't show it. And Carter and Wilson kind of look alike, but House and Benton don't have a physical likness as so much an emotional one.
