@@Kylotheson Even if the death toll is low, it will be a long term problem. There are a lot of bridges that could impact trucking on roads like 1-40. Not to mention river shipping, which is important at grain harvest especially. Add in a possible backwash of the Mississippi River to the north, and then double the water when it did turn back south. The biggest change is subsidence during or after the main event, could well cause a lake to form that might be the size of Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida. When the New Madrid goes big, it is capable of giving cartographer extra work drawing in new features.

I just want to know how they could tell an earthquake level of 7.something back in 1811. I'm not saying it didn't happen, just seems strange to have that data from over 200 years ago...

They make estimates based on land destruction in the area of the earthquake and human reporting, and then compare them to modern events that were recorded using seismometers, which were invented in 1890. 😊

All that being said, the 1812 quake made church bells ring in Boston… wouldn’t be surprised if the quake was even bigger than estimated. The Mississippi River flowed backwards… 7.5 is a low ball estimate for sure, maybe not to scare people??

That 7.5 made the lake. The Mississippi river flowed BACKWARDS for a week.

I live about 5 hours east of there..in SE TN. We have EQ all around us of 2-3. I never feel anything. Well, one time my house rattled a bit, but thunder will do that.. but I do keep expecting a bigger rumble.

I just returned from New Madrid zone Where Tennessee River / Ohio River/ Mississippi River meet and I did not feel it.

Oh look im on the map! We have earthquakes ALL the time. Usually just small tremmors. But that last night was actually pretty stout. My whole rock collection fell in the middle of the night. Come check out our lake! Reelfoot lake TN
