Epson 3170 Repair

This is an old Epson Perfection 3170 PHOTO flat bed scanner. It started making a grinding noise and then beeping. Took it apart and discovered that the tensioner pulley is only held in place with 2 plastic tabs, and one had broken off. Thus the tensioner pulley was no longer holding the belt tight.
My fix was to permanently screw it in place.
This negates the ability of the tensioner spring to continuously tension the belt, but hopefully the belt has stretched as much as it is ever going to, given this thing is several years old.
If the belt tension ever becomes a problem, I can remove my screws, use a drill bit to elongate the holes into slots, and re-install again after allowing the tensioner spring to push the bracket further out.

Thanks Steven - I only needed to clean the inside of the glass on my Epson 3170 (it had a slightly cloudy deposit on the inside surface) but your video showed me how to open it up. Useful.

Hi mine had the exact same issue. However, instead of screwing the holes through the metal, which fixates the adjuster distance and does not allow the spring to keep the band tightened. Instead, I screwed two holes just beside the adjuster metal plate, and then I used two flat countersunk head screws. I did not tighten them a lot, so allowing the adjuster to slide with the spring. But your tip, gave me the clue.😊
