Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Agree !
That, ladies and gentlemen, is how a born story teller keeps your attention for 28 minutes. Damned impressive. Thank you, Ron.
YES! More hunting stories. Only thing better is living a life that you can tell as a hunting story. Thank you.
You have to do more of these stories. This was an awesome video!
Big fan of the story and commentary afterwards
Cool story and adventure. Yes I would vote yes for more stories!
Storey time with uncle Ron. Love it. Thanks Ron
Such a wonderful story. Please Please Please keep doing these type of episodes! The longer form, behind the scenes stories that can't completely fit into print. Such a cool opportunity for us followers to be part of your adventures. Past and present! Well done Mr Spomer.

Thanks Adam. Will do!
More hunting stories please.
Thanks Ron for your excellent story recital...memory flash backs when times were simple. It's so much sweeter to recall memories after experiencing hard times...blunts the rough edges.
Great story! Hope you tell some more. Even sent it to my 10, year old grandson! I think he will enjoy it too!
I really enjoy the story you tell You are a gifted storyteller
Hi Ron. You should put everything, every hunting story you've ever written in one collection so we could purchase them.
Great story and great writing Ron from another retired writer. About 25 yrs ago we hosted a 16 yr old Czech exchange student for a school year. His father is an agricultural engineer and an avid hunter. So avid that they own a hunting lodge and lease several thousand acres for hunting red deer and European boars. Jakub fit into our rural western Colorado lifestyle better than any of our other students. Today he owns a large forestry company with several hundred employees and is still an avid hunter. We had talked about bear hunting in Kamchatka, but a couple years ago I got an email from him with several photos of his huge bear that he had taken with his Sauer 202 rifle and the 9.3x62 barrel. He probably couldn't make that hunt today with the current political situation, so I am very happy he was able to achieve one of his hunting dreams.
Really enjoyed your hunting story. Reminds me of listening to my Dad around the fire when we stop for lunch when deer hunting.
Excellent story. I appreciate hear these adventure, they truly inspire one's imagination.
That was a great story. You are a very lucky man to have experiences like that.
There's not many on here that can keep me attentive for long I can't stop in the middle even knowing I can come back to it you are a great story teller and I am looking forward to many more thank you
Yes Ron , I really enjoy listening to your old articles, I think you could start something where you read us 1 every week
Amazing story , thanks for sharing... Yes more please
Love the story my brother always a pleasure hearing your adventures!
Great story of that adventure can’t wait to hear another
Thanks Ron. It felt like I was there with you and the rest of your hunting party, except I'm sitting up in bed covered by a warm blanket. Can't wait for the next one!
Really enjoyed that story. Thanks for the video.
Wow, Ron, what a treat. I just got in from taking dad to dinner, where we were talking about a trip we took to Kamchatka back in the spring of '01. Kind of spooky odd to get this episode tonight. We had a great hunt. No fishing like you had or sauna but great hunting. I took 3 bears, more ducks than I could count, several pinnipeds, marmot and fox. I loved Kamchatka. The terrain, scenery, people are fantastic. Always wanted to go back for giant moose and snow sheep. Maybe someday if/when the world calms down. On Kam I saw more bear than on several hunts in Alaska. I actually list count of the number of bears that I saw. Usually you have to hunt elk just outside of Yellowstone to see that many grizzly/brown bears. Sounds like you had a great hunt. I will say, for the benefit of your readers/views, nothing in Asia goes as planned. I've been extremely fortunate to have hunted Asia a number of times, whatever the outfitter/agent tells you, it's a rough outline at best. But Asia has some great hunting for fantastic game. Just pack a full duffel bag of your sense of humor and enjoy the new cultural experiences. Ron, have you read the book, "Island of the Blue Foxes"? It's an interesting read of Admiral Bering's (Bering Sea) return from exploring Alaska and the Kamchatka regions. I don't know if it's still in print and I believe I've give my copy away (I usually do). If you can't find it and I still have my copy, let me know I'll mail it to you. You'll enjoy it. Cheers, Jeff

Thanks Jeff. I'll search for that book. Bering's real world adventures are quite something.
Great story, would love to hear more of them
Keep the stories coming! Fantastic! I really liked the story titled “ My father wasn’t a hunter “
Thanks for doing this again; Reading your old stories. I like them. Most memorable is the story of your dad you read around Father's Day.

Thank you, Vince.
Excellent storytelling. It brought back a memory of killing a grizzly in the land of their relatives. For a few days, I was a celebrity. Absolute strangers would stop me, pat me on the back, shake my hand, or smile, and say nice things to me. I harvested the whole carcass minus the intestines and gave it to an elder who told me before I left on the hunt that I would “catch” the bear and she would be waiting up for me to bring it to her. Tell us another story.
I know I'm a fudd, but I grew up reading about hunting in far distant lands in magazines and still enjoy this type of storytelling. Good one. I'll pass on 4 day old fish.
Awesome
Great story! Keep them coming. Thanks
love it!
That was great. I recently discovered your channel. Good stuff. Real man, gentleman, kind of stuff.

Loved the story and more would be great! Many of us can only hunt vicariously for much of the year.

Hello to the Gopher State.
What publication was that story in I have been reading you since I guess I started paying attention to the authors of stories in about 78 or 79 before that if it was in the magazine I had I read it . And thanks again for many years of entertainment and teaching
1:30 kinda sorta. Perestroika was announced in 1985, the Union fell in 1991. As I recall, it was possible for foreign tourists to book themselves a hunt before, but, obviously, not in Kamchatka. The 90s were a massive trouble. Valeriy Kuzenkov, editor of Okhota magazine, ex-wildlife manager and a hunter claimed that the fall has been a disaster for wildlife management as well. I've heard lots of good things about the wildlife management and hunting in Belarus. They hunt lots of large game there, including bisons. 1:55 lots of natives still make their living hunting, trading fur, managing deer herds, gathering herbs for sale. They also get to buy guns earlier than the rest of the nation. Some people say that we don't shoot enough bear anymore, so they grow in numbers and return to the places where there were no more bears for last few decades. Some blame it on the high bear license prices, some on bears having no value to urban hunters outside of trophy value. 6:46 Damn, I'd love myself a Dakota rifle. They're unobtainable right now, sadly - ordering a bespoke rifle like Parkwest or Austrian Prechtl and importing it is a big mess even without sanctions, and I doubt if I would ever be able to pay all the bills, I ain't no oligarch. Guess I'll be saving for something more affordable like used CZ.
That was very enjoyable. Thanks for the story, and yes, more please, lol. My uncle went on that sane hunt, but he went in thru Alaska. I have been wanting to go myself. Hey any chance you could find out if they are still doing those hunts??
That was a very good Kamchatka hunt description Very informative but now with is going on in russian These hunt are now think of the past. Too bad and good for you Ron Keep them coming Always nice to hear from you❤
I definitely do enjoy when you share stories, but Ron, I didn't hear you say how big your best was?
The way you tell a story, it seems you found your calling early Ron, and never worked a day of your life after. Great story.

Ha ha. Thanks, Mike, but the work never stopped. Just a different kind of work. Betsy and I filmed 6 videos over the weekend, cleaning and scoping and test firing 12 different rifles in 30-06 for 30-06 week. 10 to 12-hour days. Yesterday we filmed a 7PRC video. Today we're on a 7x57 video and so it goes... But work is always enjoyable when it's focused on things you love. Much better than putting in the hours making widgets or clearing tables for someone else's business. Imagine, getting paid to shoot and hunt! We are blessed.

@@RonSpomerOutdoors You surely are. Look forward to 30-06 week.
Ron wouldn't it be easier to get close to the bears because most of them have never seen people ?
Cool
That's what makes hunting what it is.
I would have maby enjoyed a picture or two and knowing what size the bear was
Er, no thanks Ron. Such hardship is not my cup of tea. I prefer hunting in sub-Saharan Africa where camp comforts after a hard day’s hunting are both expected and provided. I appreciate the linen table cloths, pink gins and servants turning my bed down. Granted there are no bears to be found but there are many other interesting variants of plains game that interest me. At my age, I’m of similar vintage to you, I prefer the hunting experience of Hemingway and Capstick whom I knew. Interesting story though - you are certainly a mensch.
Just wondering how you get the bear back to camp?
Kamchatka has the biggest moose, bears, and elk in the world.
Come on Ron averybody knows your a modern day Davy Crockett no explanation needed..
👍
Wonder if there still any westerners hunting in Russia now.?? Used to read about n hear n even seen TV shows there..

There must be. I mean, there are lots of tourists, I live in an old historical neighborhood and there are busloads of Indians and Chinese tourists, with Germans and other Europeans being a slightly less common sight. There must be some Euro or American hunters as well, the large game seasons mostly start in late August or September.
