I recommend the Philip Köster tack which you can see on Philip Köster youtube channel video from 2014, "Windsurfing at the step" in Tenerife at 1 minute 10 seconds in. Going through transition he does back hand ( one nearest clew on boom) to mast then front hand goes to new side of boom at harness lines. For tacking where you are heading straight into the waves this way seems more robust and simple. One advantage is that while holding the mast for a second the sail can swing around neutral, doing its own thing. Don't be too quick even to grab the boom until you sort of stabilized on the new side of board. Can help to grab boom fairly near mast and push backwinded a little for a second or two. A sharp pull on back hand before going round can help. It is still tricky to judge the exact moment to go around in relation to how the board is pointing to the wind direction.

I’ve been trying to do fast tack for 50 years on my 200 liter boards. Next time. I’ll try that front foot position. I’ll also mention that currents and swell can make one tack direction harder than the other. At Kailua I can do port to starboard only. See Kailua windsurfing for seniors.

I very much appreciate all of our videos and 'd like to join a clinic one day :-) ... When fast taking, is it advies to push the sail opposite to the wind just after being on the other side?

great video! thanks a lot. Where do you stand on the topic of back-winding the tack once around the mast, in order to increase stability? cheers

It’s good to do everything on big boards, then get a bit smaller each year, until you get to about 65 yrs old then go bigger each year!

Thank you for your nice video! 👍🏻🙂 But leaving the rear footstrap before you hook out of harness is not a good advice. When a hard gust is coming right at this moment you are not able to hook out cause everything goes too fast and you crash into your boom, mast and sail with your body. I did exactly this last week and it was very painful and I suffer until now from a bruise in my shoulder. Everytime hook out of your harness BEFORE you leave the rear footstrap! ☝🏻

Brilliant - best tack tuition I've seen so far - especially bothering to mention the slight oversheet when the sail is raked back - many top instructors do this so intuitively, they forget to mention it.. (I also think it might be worth discussing whether the oversheet manoeuvre helps set up a slight twisting 'moment' from which you can scissor the board round - or at least that's what I do - or is that a bad habit?)

If you can do something in high winds, can you do it in low winds? Because i never harnessed before 3 days ago and i found it very easy. Its just go with it make speed and go upwind. The only thing i need to work on is tacking and jibes.

There is an easier way to begin this. Don't go through the wind until you're on the leeward side. Second, feet around first, try to keep pressure in the rig and pull yourself across the board. Then backwind your way around.
