Episode 54 - The Kennet and Avon Chronicles - part one, Reading to Newbury

Episode 54 - Kennet and Avon Chronicles, Reading to Newbury
In July, Tales From The Swan’s Neck left The Thames to cruise Narrowboat Reverie on the Kennet and Avon Canal. In the first episode of the Kennet and Avon Chronicles, Andrew encounters notorious locks, cross weirs, drug use, and threatening behaviour. Time to take a dip and join the swans amid the rural bliss and scorching temperatures.

Lovely, if tricky cruise Andrew.. I don’t know much about the Reading section, but the K&A is the closest canal to where I live. It looks as if your video was one last summer. In winter, or indeed, any wet weather the towpaths are nothing more than mud once you get past Newbury and Hungerford. It is a pretty route though, as I’m sure you found out.

Need some water time. Just had the worst winter storm I’ve seen here and I’ve lived her since “76”. -40C is easy. This above freezing with 4 inches of snow fallowed by rain is ugly. A quarter inch of icy crust on top of the snow. My partner is a caregiver. She ended up working 48 hours straight as the night shift folks couldn’t get there. Good that I have lots of firewood and food. We haven’t lost electricity but large areas in Fairbanks have. Hope you had a good Christmas. The bad weather held off until after Christmas at least.

@@talesfromtheswansneck we are suppose to get 6 more inches of snow tonight. Our 3 miles of road is in what is called a service area. It’s getting plowed to night a those of us that choose are getting our driveways plowed tomorrow….but the state road at the beginning of our road isn’t plowed so we with little cars, even though they are 4 wheel drive probably can’t go anywhere anyhow. Life in the far north. Enjoy your warm weather.

Beautiful, thank you. We had minus 18 here yesterday and have eight inches of snow - very pretty but just the beginning of 3 and a half more months of snow-bound mountain winter, so it was absolutely delightful to get this 'postcard from Summer'. Love it that you shared your au naturel swim with the world! Your response to the canal-side bullies - weeds and the undercarriages of ducks - seem like perfect therapy. And what a fascinating array of lock styles!

Bumped into you for a boaty nod&wave a couple of times in and around Devizes whilst I was on my first ,CC SH with dog, non-lockdown summer. Yeah, the Thames was really lovely. Got to deep lock No 10 and back to the Midlands in about three lazy months. Apart from Caen Hill Flight I was mostly locking on my own. Garston Lock, the first time, took me 50 minutes to get everything set for going up, then I saw my windlass on my roof.... D'oh!. The K&A was beautiful, challenging but worth it. If I return it will be with a weapons-grade flamethrower and strimmer. Cheers, looking forward to the next one.
