Episode 52: Our Favorite Quilting Things and Swoon Quilt Stories

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this episode, Sherri and Chelsi share many of their favorite quilting notions in a special "Favorite Things" episode. They also do a deep dive into the Swoon Quilt pattern by Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms, after receiving multiple questions about the quilt when it was mentioned in episode 50. Sherri shares her story of piecing together the first Swoon quilt, and Chelsi shares her story of hiking her Swoon quilt to the top of a mountain!

I just love everything you do & especially that you are family! I just went to my first quilt show recently in Dallas & got to hold & feel the Quilter Select rotary cutter! It is heavier, easier to control & felt so good in your hands :) I can't thank you enough for all the great new info & KZread videos that I can re-watch all the time as I'm learning, they are priceless!!!

My Janome 8900QCP and my Bernina 770QE plus both sew plenty fast for me. In fact I love the speed adjustment on them because very accurate piecing is necessary for my happiness. I owned a low end Juki (can't remember the number) for a short time. Bought it for a travel machine but I only sewed on it for maybe 2 hours before giving it to a friend for her daughter. Now my travel machine is a Brother cs6000i and it is perfect for retreats and classes and for teaching my 4 year old granddaughter to sew! I learned to sew on a Singer because my mom's mom was a professional dressmaker and passed down her machine when she got a new one. When I got married, I bought a Kenmore that I used for 20 years and passed on to my sister when I treated myself to a Bernina Virtuosa 160 in 1997 and which I still own (and still works great). Another 20 years later, I used some severance money to splurge on a Janome 8900QCP, which I still own and which still works superbly. Then I went crazy (for me) and bought my diva machine (the Bernina 770) on December 30, 2021 (sale, ya know!) even though I was still loving my Janome (and will never sell except maybe to my BFFF - best fabric friend forever LOL - if she ever wants it as a replacement for her Janome 6600) Obviously I am open to diversity! ps. I also own an aqua Hello Kitty machine (Janome) for it's cuteness. It does work, but not up to my needs. Maybe my granddaughter will want it someday....

I am on my 3rd machine. My first 2 were Singers. I just purchased my very first Baby Lock (Brilliant) and I love it! The Baby Lock Accomplish is comparable in every way to the Juki. I kind of wish I had known about the straight-line quilting sewing machines beforehand. But my Brilliant has all the bells and whistles and I love the easy threading system and the plastic bobbins.

One online quilt shop owner said on her video recently that you need to not slide the QS rulers across the fabric as you are repositioning it. She said they use them in their shop and the film on the back will eventually wear off by not lifting them. Granted, they will probably use theirs more than the average quilter, but I wanted to pass that along as a hint…maybe use one of the handles that attach by suction cups to be able to easily lift them. I have invested so much in my Creative Grids ruler collection that I doubt I’ll change brands, but I love the idea of a no-slip ruler!

I loved this episode! So many helpful hints for sewing machines and notions. Before I knew about diagonal seam tape and the mini corners trim tool (and many other quilting rules) I tried a Swoon 16 quilt. It ended up being a Swoon 9 quilt because I got so frustrated and decided to stop at 9 blocks. I think I could have a less frustrating experience if I tried one now. We still use the quilt I made though. Love all of your quilts and patterns!

Great episode. Love Chelsi’s quilts. I have and use many of your favourite tools. I recently changed sewing machine brands and even though the new machine sews a beautiful stitch and has a few “options” that are great, it’s missing some that the other brand has had as standard on their mid-priced machines for several years.

I would like to add two of my favorites. The Sewline marking pencils ❤️ and the super long quilting, 1 7/8” pins by clover 💕 The pins don’t leave huge holes in the fabric and (cover your eyes quilt police) you can sew over them which I do all the time especially when sewing very small pieces together. Never broke a pin or a needle or pocked out an eye 😉

I purchased my Juki TL2010 from Primitive Gatherings several years ago, and love it. I would recommend purchasing the hinged standard 1/4 foot for accurate piecing, and not the 1/4 with the guide. For some reason this foot is not included with the machine. This machine is a game changer for piecing.
