Episode 292 - Venice and the Rest of the Empire with John Giebfried

Today we look at the parts of the Roman Empire we haven't covered so far in the post-siege narrative. This includes Attalia, Trebizond and the multiple acquisitions of Venice. Helping me is Dr John Giebfried from the University of Vienna.

Thanks! But is not comfortable to see Byzantine there if they have been called them also Roman until the end, otherwise people thinks that Roman Empire ended on 500, when has lasting until 1453. Thanks anyway!

Barking up the wrong tree really as it’s a follow up to the history of Rome podcast which decided to end at 476. As the follow up story, this newer podcast with a new host took on the most common name in English for pretty obvious marketing purposes I imagine. It’s frankly comical to write off a whole piece of work over the name like that. Robin also constantly uses Roman n New Rome Romania and Roman Empire throughout the whole podcast. He even greatly interjects Greek at times he deems appropriate. There are few works in the medium that have done a subject so much justice.

Why English and Americans insist to call Byzantine empire if it’s really East Roman Empire, what about to call English Empire of Viking Empire?

its just a historiographical issue and makes distinguishing the late antique and medieval phases of the empire easier

It's been in place so long that it would require a universal consensus to stop using the name, which isn't going to happen. Nowadays it isn't used to seperate them from their Roman heritage, more to distinguish it from its pre-Medieval self.
