A hattrick in two games is nice. Gretzky scored NINE goals combined in two consecutive games, 12/27/81 and 12/30/81. Previous to that, he had six goals in three games (And 84 goals after 66 games, before slumping). Speaking of Gretzky, who was second to Gretzky in goals that season with 64? 84/85, Bossy was second to Gretzky's teammate, Kurri, with 61 goals. It was tough for Bossy with Gretzky, Kurri, Lafleur, Gare, McDonald (66 goals in 82/83). Tough era.

Two hattricks to start a season tied the record so that was very noteworthy for Matthews. Obviously Wayne never did that. It was tough for Bossy. Which is why I believe the argument for him as the greatest pure goal scorer ever completely fails - in part- because head to head with Wayne 79/80-86/87, Bossy is 92 goals behind him....I mean....it's great he had 9-straight 50 goal seasons. And Bossy is right at the top of my list of pure goal scorers- he's 2 or 3 all depending on how you want to grade or rank Wayne but there is no doubt, none whatsoever that the greatest pure goal scorer over a career in NHL history is OV. But man......is he looking slow right now. Let's see how their next 6-8 games go. Going to be interesting.

@@liammaguire6603 Very true. "How can you be the best of all time...When you aren't even the best of your own era?" I think, maybe you could argue Gretzky had an edge over the likes of Lafleur and Bossy, in the sense that, he killed penalties (Thus, he played more minutes per game). I remember back in 1993, Gretzky made the point about how Bossy and Lafleur didn't kill penalties. (Well, not entirely true, as Bossy had a stint at that in 80/81, perhaps to help him get 50 in 50 and some more time next season. In his last two full seasons, Bossy killed penalties, also a bit in 86/87, when it all came to a sudden end. Lafleur DID kill penalties in 74/75, despite missing ten games. He would have probably won the scoring title that year had he not missed time. After Bowman left in '79 Lafeur was given some PK time as his overall game was actually getting better. He might have won the scoring title in 79/80 had he not missed six games) Personally speaking, both Bossy's and Lafleur's coaches missed the boat by not having them kill penalites (Ditto for Crosby) as BOTH were extremely underrated defensively.

@@scottmorissey8915 Wayne had the edge over everybody. Guy and Bossy's legacy are intact. No shame being behind 99. Neirher Guy or Bossy were ever cut out for the PK. Easier assimilation for a center but regardless, we've deviated from the original point. OV is the greatest pure goal scorer over a career.

@liammaguire do you know where and when the Rocket scored his first ever NHL goal?

Yes, the Rocket scored his first goal at the Montreal Forum in a 10-4 win over the NY Rangers and goalie Steve Buzinski whose nickname was Steve 'the puck goes-inski Buzinski lol.... It was an unassisted goal and it actually was the game winner. Rocket was wearing number 15. Ironically Rocket became the all-time goal scoring leader in the NHL ten years later to the day - November 8, 1952 with career goal 325 passing Nels Stewart. Montreal beat Chicago that night and he scored the goal on Al Rollins. :).
