@@The_SegaHolic Get ready for a classic Internet rabbit hole. Welcome to the world of RF induction soldering. If you do an Internet search for "eevblog metcal diy" you should turn up some useful results. I looked up the EEVblog Forum thread after leaving my previous comment and the title is "DIY Metcal 13.56 MHz RF Supply". There are a bunch of other threads on the same subject, but I think that's the main thread. If you get really intrigued by curie point (RF induction) soldering you should also check out the stuff made by Thermaltronics and Hakko's FX-100.

Nice video! Got me a lot of ideas.

Thanks, this is really a good recap. The scoring with the knife to cut the power supply box was a good idea. The reuse of the screen protector is an excellent idea too. You have spared no effort to make this video including the special effects.

Dayumb! :) Nice video. Must've taken a long time to put together. The diagrams for the handle wiring are really nice 👍. You really went overkill on this soldering iron! it's a bit like a DIY lambo XD The stylistic voice filter is pretty cool, at the beginning I was confused, but it I dug it pretty much immediately, it helps make the video fresh, immersive! I was curious if you touched the firmware? Or if it's custom/can be found on GitHub. This video reminded me why I like tech videos so much

very nice. What MCU does your board have? Were you able to write custom firmware on it?

Does the firmware have adjustable wattage limits for C245, T12 and C210? For example, limit C245 to 120W?

Great video, may I ask the 936 handle is fit for AIXUN T3A also?

Yes, you can make the custom 936 handle for this station and it will also work on the Aixun T3A, but you will need to calibrate it carefully. It will run about 150 degrees too hot on the Aixun, so careful! I replied to your question on the other video on how to make a 936 handle. I will be doing a video on how to make a 936 hande soon. 👍

Thanks for the detailed video. I was wondering about those controller boards. I have Metcal and Pace soldering stations which use tip cartridges. I also have Hakko and Weller stations with separate tip and heater types. But I've been thinking about building something that I can repair when it breaks. I work on mostly older thru-hole PCBs and point-to-point wired vacuum tube amplifiers so I can probably get by with T-12/T-15 tips. Do you know if these controller boards will work well with a linear power supply and transformer, since it is probably not as well regulated as an SMPS? I also wonder if this will work with the new Hakko T-39 tips?

Thank You! 🙏 I’ve tried my variable linear power supply and it works great. There’s an error margin for the input power, so it doesn’t have to be perfect if you’re not using a variable PSU. I’d imagine it would be the better PSU to use rather than a switching one because of the low noise. I think you’ll be rather surprised at these much, much cheaper solutions, both the station pcbs and the tips. But always go in it with tempered expectations compared with those industrial solutions you do have. But cost performance wise, these are just plain awesome.

@@The_SegaHolicThanks for your quick reply. I didn't know how tightly regulated the DC supply has to be. I would probably use a 200-250va toroid transformer which has better regulation, less voltage sag than EI transformer but with no active regulation like your variable DC supply. Basically, a bridge rectifier and capacitor bank. The problem with industrial solutions is cost. New Metcal is nice but expensive. I buy older used stations. Curie Point RF induction has the best performance but they're difficult to repair and consumables are very expensive. Perhaps I don't need the very best performance as much as reliability. Hence the idea of keeping it simple with a linear supply. Not sure how well knockoff handpieces will hold up. However, can always use genuine JBC and Hakko handpieces with DIY PS and controller.

@@The_SegaHolic You've used for several months? Heavy use? You think they may be poorly designed? No redundancy with MOSFET. Fail and burn up tip!! Controller is basically disposable throw-away. Cost less than one tip cartridge. BTW does the menu allow Farenheit temperature setting? Or only Celsius?

Hello, I watched your video with pleasure and got the same xpg controller. I'm thinking of using it with the T245 handle. The seller has specified the t245 links on the product's information page differently than you have shown here. Which way should I go? I'm thinking of using the sleep mode as well. Thank you in advance for your interest. By the way, sounds like he's talking over the radio line is super.

Just buy the AIXUN T3A T245 handle. It will work without modificaton on all XPG controllers such as this one.

Hey man, I have some questions, is this an 80 W soldering station? What is the lowest temperature you can make it sleep?

You soldered a wire from pin 1 on GX12 connector to the rear of the case 4mm banana jack for sleep activation? Or solder to "S" on PCB? Sorry, just to be clear.. in the video there are two connections on the banana jack for sleep activation, where are they connecting to?

@@The_SegaHolic I saw the pinouts for T12 and GX12 in the video but I was wondering about the banana jack at the back. I thought there would be one wire soldered to the jack, but there are two. Is the second wire off the banana jack just grounding it to the case? Very good video by the way, you explained everything really well. Would you recommend a Sugon C245 handle or do you think the Aixun T3A is better? I understand for T12, the SUGON is better because it fits the stand better. For C245, Aixun doesn't need rewiring but which do you think would be a better handle? You prefer knurled plastic compared to foam grip?

Hello SegaHolic, One question I have the same PCB but I'm having some trouble changing the Pinout for the C210 soldering iron. Basically my C210 handle has 3 wires, and all the diagrams that I see only say to connect two wires. How did you connect yours? Thnx you.

13:25 has the wiring. You really only need the 3 wires since stand sleep is used instead of shake sleep.

thank for your video sir. I have a 936 clone but heating element has 4 wires(2 heating and 2 for ptc) how would I connect thermistor?? one to ground and the other to pcb pin 2? (T) or maybe one to + and other to pin 2? Thanks in advance!

Word of warning, AC terminal lugs should be crimped first and foremost. Soldering can be done after, but IEC guidelines say there must be some other form of mechanical connection other than simply solder. It can pose a huge fire risk. Others are going to follow your tutorial, so for their safety please leave this comment. I posted this once already and it was removed.

Much thanks for the heads up. Man, just when you think you know all the major safety standards! But not seeing how the wire could heat up with enough current for the solder to moltenize before the breaker trips… but should’nt question code or guidelines. And wouldn’t “connectors only” be nore iffy as they can be pulled off and can arc. Also, what about filling the space with hot glue? Sorry, too busy to scour the IEC guigelines right now. I’ll post a follow up vid that addresses this soon. Again, much thanks. 👍

@@The_SegaHolic BTW loved the video. You've got some great maker skills for sure. For the AC terminals ,you might be ok if the PSU is never moved or never takes a hard nock and lives a perfect stationary life. Maybe there is never any stress on the solder joints to cause them to fail. Maybe the breaker might trip first, but that may not be true for every situation. Something that always sticks with me is to remember that for every safety regulation or guidelines to exist it means someone has died or been seriously injured. They dont come out of nowhere. As OSHA says: Safety Rules are Written in Blood.

Yes, calibration is possible. Don’t remember if the value is added or subtracted to the real-time temp, so you can experiment a bit. Also, if you’re gonna make a T18 clone handle, the calibration numbers will be rather way off, but is manageable to a degree. I really recommend doing the C245, C215, and T12(T15) handles as they work beautifully.

Hello from Italy! Instant subscribe and like at the video, really nicely put together. This was exactly what i was looking for but I have a question. I've seen some review about Aixun t3a voltage leak with grounded boards, current goes up to 1 amp through the tip and to the board you are soldering with temperature spikes (can clearly be seen in Tony359 videos about the t3a station) and was wandering if this xpg controller has the same flaws before buying all the components. Have you ever measured it?

Hello. Is the control board for Aixun T3A made by XPG? If it were made by a completely different company, I don't think the same problem would occur. Actually, I was also planning to purchase this XPG board, but after reading your comment, I am reconsidering the purchase. I think the spike on the soldering iron tip of the Aixun T3A is clearly a defect.

@@toribird8353i don't know, i ordered to test but as i tested it exploded on me as i rised the temperature and cought fire 🤬. Though I think it wasn't the controller fault, when i adapted the t245 plug and handle i went with color matching the wire without testing and now i descovered that the handle's manifacturer must have switched red and blue wire so i think i shorted the tip (?)

other than that i think i'll repurchase and test for voltage leak, but shouldn't be present as it could be only a aixun problem. Can't tell for sure till i test

I only have real JBC C245 tips as I have not tried the generic tips yet, although I have some on order. The cheapest place to get the real tips is: www.tme.com/us/en-us/ As for T12/T15, I just get the cheapest generic tips I can find on Aliexpress. Real Hakko T15 tips are relatively cheap from Hakko USA www.tme.com/us/en-us/ For the C210 tips, I just have one, which was the cheapest I could find on Aliexpress. I wanted to see if it would be worth it getting real tips. The Real JBC C210 tips are even more expensive than the real C245 tips, so I don't know if I'll ever get real tips.

Lastly, the C245 and T12/T15 tips are calibrated pretty close out of the box for my controller. If you have the controller on Auto handle detect, the temps for the C210 and T18 and 936 tips are way off, so careful as you may ruin the tip. I'll give you the settings for the C210 and T18 tip calibraton when you're ready on Twtter. This is something I should address in a video.

You can buy an Aixun T12 handle if you are having difficulty as you can plug those directly and it will work. Otherwise, you can watch this video on how to make your own T12 handle what uses the 10k resistor. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l6KTlaqvaLbOZLg.html
