Episode 129: Exploring White Sands National Park//Sledding FAIL...Or Was It?

In this episode we spend the day exploring White Sands National Park. We decide to try three of the park's five hiking trails, choosing the ones that were easiest to get to and most likely to not be too grueling.
We began with the Dune Life Nature Trail, a moderate one mile loop where the dunes and the scrub brush intermingle. This area is loaded with a variety of wildlife, but most tend to shy away from humans.
Our next trail was the Playa Trail, an easy 1200 yard path to a dry lake bed that was in the process of forming crystals. Depending on the time of year you visit White Sands National Park, you could also find this lake full of water or just a dry mud bed.
Finally we strolled along the Interdune Boardwalk, the only White Sands National Park handicapped accessible trail. From here you have beautiful vistas of the dunes and the Sacramento Mountains.
Then we headed out to find some great places for dune sledding. The first dunes we tried ended up being a huge sledding FAIL!!! We were trying to go easy and not hurt ourselves, but it turns out you need much bigger dunes to sled down sand. When we made it out to the back of White Sands National Park we found the tall, steep, pristine dunes that ended up being perfect for sledding. Our second attempt was finally a success!!!
Join us to see how much fun you can have exploring White Sands National Park!

We used PAM kitchen spray on the sled. The sand needs to be packed so if you go where others have it works better. I packed the sand for my kids and they flew down the hill. I would guess I weigh 40-50 lbs. more than Bubba and packed the sand down good. Glad you guys had a good time.

Hey guys!! This ended up being a lot more interesting (and fun) than we had imagined. Not sure about the sxs trails. They're probably more toward Las Cruces or Alamogordo. The entire valley where the national park is located is either Air Force base or missile range. Take care you too. We miss you.

Hav'n fun ...like a couple of bigKIDS ..WTG ...stay young! (I'm hoping to be venturing out that way in lateApril/May with a couple of RV+gyro in tow, friends from FL ) - planning on some time together flying our gyros about in UTAH ... but that looks like a fun stop en-route for some ground -fun! The local airspace a bit restrictive for recreational flights - be cool to fly there ...but lots of no-go airspace! UT has a nice sand-dune area that I have flown around ...west of Nephi!

Between the missile range and the air force base, I can see how it would be tough to find available airspace. It sure would be an incredible flight though! Utah is so beautiful, and it must be a pretty amazing thing to fly over all those red rocks and canyons. Sounds like a really fun trip!

SUCCESS! Once you got on the right hill it looks fun! 😆 but I was disappointed clearly your pup wanted to go down too.. I was surprised you didn't put Lulu on your lap💗 Anywho thanks for sharing this Great Adventure p.s. yeah the hill looked intimidating 1st time because at our age. What's going through your head at the top of that hill just a little bit oh s*** if I break something it's not going to heal up so fast like when I was younger lmao

We didn't show too much of it but Lulu had a blast chasing us down those hills. She was hilarious! You are absolutely right about knowing we break easier and heal slower than we used to. When I forget that my body is quick to remind me lol. 🤣🤣🤣

Well Bubba at least you all didn't go 🐎 over tea kettle 🤣😂😭. By the way there is a state park located in Nevada called Sand Mountain. You can actually ski down it. Spent a whole summer out there. Doing off road tire testing. Would of been neat to see some of the missle launch's. Safe travels and roads. Brian and Cindy "xtreambydesign with passion"

Lol thank goodness! Neither of us bounces like we used to. After trying to sled, it's hard to imagine skiing on sand, but sounds like it would be fun to try. Yes, a missile launch would have been really cool to see! Take care guys and stay safe. Hope you're both feeling better!
