This was good, i loved the funny parts about the Crue. I found this video because i'm thinking of swapping out the pickups in my Epi LP Special II for the DiMarzio Super D at the bridge, and not sure yet for the neck, maybe Duncan '59 (which may be a little quiet?) or the Fishman Fluence with the multiple voices. In your video what i would have liked better is to start with the original pickups, then compare the two as you went along with each setting. By the time you got to the original pickups i forgot how the DiMArzios sounded! Otherwise great job; thanks!

Good stuff buddy. Thanks for providing this comparison which will help me decide how to rewire my guitars. One tip about your playing I want to give: make your vibrato wiggle with the rhythm of the song. Don't just shake it at any old speed. Lots and lots of beginner players learn vibrato and they don't realize it has to be expressed rhythmically. You can bend up on the 8th notes for a warm vibrato, or bend up on the 16th notes for a more urgent feel. Once you get this, you will sound much more purposeful. Kudos for you for admitting you're not proud of your playing, and putting yourself out there despite that. Try my tip. Yer' gonna stand out from the crowd.

This is about the difference I expected. I changed out the bridge pickup in an Epiphone Flying V years ago and it was like taking a blanket off of whatever amp it was being played through. It was the Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro. The stock pickups were pretty much garbage, muffled with little to no note definition. The pickup swap made a huge difference to say the least. I also had a Sparkle top Epiphone Les Paul from the '90's, it was a green one. I wished I still had it. I like the neck shape on those Epiphones but the stock pickups are awful to my ears.

I got the Epiphone Les Paul classic for my late Christmas gift. The quality was great there was no bleeding in the binding and the finish was spotless and no scratches. The only thing that wasn't hot were the pickups. They sounded fine an a Marshall crunch channel but any sort of overdrive or distortion it doesn't sound very hot and breaks up very easily. I tried it on a vox 20 watt and a prs archon 50 watt combo and they didn't sound very hot.

I like the Super Distortion in the bridge but I don't like it in the neck. I'd rather have a lower output pickup in the neck that wasn't so booming in the bass. I think the original neck pickup sounded better. What would be even better in the neck would be a PAF type pickup like a Dimarzio 36th Anniversary or a PAF Pro. Also, it would be smart to balance the pickups so they have the same volume or have the bridge be just a bit hotter.

Super distortions are extremely reasonably priced compared to well basically everyone else and can be had for next to nothing used so its worth it to try just based on that when I decide to swap pickups in gibsons I usually go with duncans which I still think are as good as any boutique winder especially the higher end Duncan pickups but when it comes to pickup swaps for an epiphone I actually like to go the gibson route more . I have always been very impressed with sound of gibson pups in epiphone les Paul's even when I had been not so impressed with the same gibson set in an gibson les paul and swapped for dincnas. There is just something about the sound of gibson pups in epiphone that have a very appealing quality to me especially burstbuckers despite usually preferring duncans in my gibsons. The epi 59 both the new and the old one with burstbuckers 2 and 3 the 50th anniversary 1960 les Paul with burstbuckers 1 and 2 and the epi 60s tribute les paul with 57 classic and 57 classic puls are all amazing sounding guitars that stand up to Gibson les Paul's in a serious way . I have the new epi 59 and I am currently looking for a used epi 60s tribute . Had a chance to buy one on mint condition a few weeks back for 500 dallara canadian but had to pass becuase I had gotten the shipping notice for my epi 59 which was $1263 canadian after tax and rent was due and had to take on 4 overtime shifts just to cover the 59 and rent so sadly I had to pass on the tribute . I was hoping it would perhaps still be available a week latter when I got paid but it sold the same day I passed on it . I am also considering the Bonamassa 3 pickup custom and dropping a bursrbixker 1 2 and 3 in it in place of the probuckers . I am now completely in love with epiphones with upgraded pickups and will probably be the only guitar purchases I make from now on .I am set for Gibsons and cannot justify buying anymore especially when pickup upgrades can not only get you in the ballpark they can actually get you in the game..

Hey this is great man! You're talking about a subject that I wanted to talk with someone about for a long time. I bought a Epi Les Paul Standard, for about $300 at Guitar Center. I tried it at the store, it seemed ok, but when I tried it at home, I felt that the stock pickups were really muddy when I I rolled the volume up. 85% I am on the bridge pickup. So a week later I decided to upgrade both pickups to the Seymour Duncan Hot Rod set, Alnico V pickups, a Jazz Pickup on the neck the the famous JB Pickup on the bridge (16.6 Ohms DC). The tech at guitar center did it. And you know what I got no improvement at all, maybe a very tiny clearer sound when I played clean. Needless to say I was annoyed. Should I have done anything else to it, like change the electronics, i.e., Pots, Capacitors, different wiring? In disgust, I sold the guitar. Years ago, I bought a Schecter A-6 50th Anniversary guitar with the same pickup set, 24 frets, modeled after their Avenger series. The pickups in that guitar are stock, the Hot Rod set. This guitar is a Beast! Great Sound! Still have it, you and I have the same taste in music. I hear 38 Special, Led Zeppelin, Beatles (Greatest Rock group that ever lived, in my opinion of course), Stones, AC/DC, Sabbath, Judas Priest, that kind of stuff. I want to get your honest opinion on whether I should have sold the Epi guitar. Thank you again very much for posting this. Better sounding, better quality. and if I can't afford it, I'll just finance it. Just my two cents. Thanks you. Stay safe. Oh, by the way, I should be getting my Spark today. My favorite thing it does is just on the verge of overdrive - smooth, fat and juicy, and reacts well with OD pedals.

I don't know what the heck you're on about bad playing. The kiss riffs were a great way to demo the guitar and pickups.

Four years later, your Motley Crue comments still stand true. Worse yet, repeat offenders. As for the DiMarzio SD’s, what a difference! Night and day.

Omg my playing was so awful in this. I can’t talk too much about the Crue as I just wrapped my third Last Trip to Disney World. This one will stick though. I’ll send my avatar next time lol

Epiphone pickups don't exactly suck, but compared to a Super Distortion, Duncan '59 or Bill Lawrence they're pretty much out of their league.
