Love it when Epiphones are allowed to be Epiphones instead of reasonably priced "inspirations" of their Gibson counterparts. Great throwback to Epiphones golden era with that hourglass headstock and other vintage appointments. Great sounding P90s too!

I obviously haven't seen every Casino, but I have seen quite a few and, to the best of my knowledge, they're all like the one in your video--completely hollow without even a post or block under the bridge which many otherwise hollowbody guitars have. Electronic work on these, and semi-hollows with holes under the pickups are a piece of cake. Some semi-hollows don't have the cutout for the pickups and just have a hole for the pickup lead. This is when you have to work through the F-hole and it's a lot harder.

I purchased a Casino Coupe a few years back, and it's just remarkable how nice of a guitar it is. The 339 shape is so comfortable, and while the fit and finish isn't the greatest and it needed a good setup (don't all guitars?), it is an absolutely fantastic player. Wonderful guitar for the couch while watching a movie. I've thought about getting a full-size Casino, but honestly, I'm not sure why I'd need it!

I've got an Epi Casino from '98 (I think). Unsung plant, Korea made, in Cherry & mine's a complete hollow body (as I thought they all were). Mine has a very different tone from my '96 Gibson 335, just as one would expect from a hollowbody with P90's, compared to a center block with 'buckers. Lovely warm, super articulate, never muddy tone from those sweet P90 pups too.

Interesting is that this new version of the casino has normally less hot pickups than the previous versions with natural, cherry or burst finishes made in China. These were having pick-ups which with certain amps could be a bit muffled or muddy, particularly the neck pick-up. The pickups on this model felt very different when I tried them. More defined.

Have had 4 or 5 Casinos, and they are my favorite. Unidentified rattles can be a pain to locate...however this is a good problem to have as the more it rattles the better the resonance the guitar has. When removing pups, it's imperative to get the tightness just right as metal pup covers do not conform exactly to body contours. A slim padding or if needed / wanted a shim will eliminate any rattles from this area. Pickup selector switch can vibrate. Bridge retaining wire can rattle. Personally, after shimmying the neck pup, rattles disappeared...accept the stock pup selector switch still vibrates at times. Try playing Beatles "Sun King" on your Casino...nails that tone just right. Great video...as usual😎👍 😎👍❤🖖 Love brother

Great guitars. My 1st proper electric guitar. It's versatility blew me away. Got a sunburst about 9 years ago. I know people bang on about issues with feedback when you turn the gain up, but that's all part of the fun. Finding the sweet spot is so rewarding. I was really lucky getting mine as the last one in the shop before the dealer dropped Epiphone for a couple of years for £230, but still great value at today's price. As you demonstrated at the begining, its accoustic abilities are fantastic. Great sound & perfect for a quiet noodle on the sofa when you don't want to get the amp & cable out. If you haven't got one, get one. Really a fun & versatile guitar that is much underrated. Although mine has a glossy finish, it is noticeable that the finish is starting to almost sink into the surface of the wood, almost forming hundreds of tine pits that give it a lived in, duller look. Already waiting for next week's video. I have promised myself a Gibson Les Paul 50s when I fully retire, but my Epiphone ones are really good. Do I want to part with the extra cash?

That's ok, I might just have to get the Epiphone 50s, but fancy a Les Paul Gold Top with P90s. Noticable how much cheaper guitars are now in the EU compared to the UK, so I feel a road trip coming on. I will try to use the logical money saving issue to buy both guitars on my wife, but might have to offer up with an overnight stay in a nice hotel!

New subscriber here, love your indepth and informative videos. I have owned four Japanese made Casinos (3x Matsumoku & one Terada made Elitist) and a 64 Gibson 330 in the past, sadly don't have one at present. I rewired the Elitist and one of the Matsumoku ones, a fiddly job but being fully hollow the harnesses went through the pickup holes. Most Casino's are fully hollow, some of the Chinese and Korean ones have a sound post/block behind the rear pickup connecting top to back. The major difference is usually how the neck is connected to the body. The USA/Terada made ones have a solid Mahogany neck block, whereas most others have a neck tenon sitting in an open block. Anyway, keep up the great work, I'm really enjoying your content, and looking forward to the Epiphone Riviera review👍

There are subtle differences between the Epi worn and it’s Chinese big brother. The p/u’s in the natural/sunburst are much hotter (11.7) and there are support posts inside the body cavity, as the worn casino is totally hollow, and it also weighs in about a pound heavier, and costs more money.

Superb!.. As you asked, my 1984 MIJ Casino is fully hollow. My pickups were slightly microphonic so I had them lightly dipped in wax and they are fine (learn where to stand on stage) feedback is more controllable rather than screeching. I've take off the scratchplate, think it looks better. Over the last 30 odd years of ownership I have found that it's a very versatile guitar more so than most others, on a par with a strat. Use the volume knobs and tone knobs more on this guitar than any other to help shape the sound. It's a guitar you'll find that fits in where the strat, tele, LP just doesn't and it can do all that those can do too. Another one thing that seems to be part of ownership of a casino is they like to be played, they play in after about an hour and then they almost play themselves, put it away for a week or two, month year and you'll have to play it in again, it responds the more the longer you play it you'll find. If more people knew how useful these were Epiphone couldn't make enough of them but then again us casino owners have our own secret. We'll presented program as usual, thanks for sharing your casino with us. 👍

I always wanted a green guitar. This one looks like a real beauty. I have gone down the Gretch, Electromatic rabbit hole, but you have caught my attention with this video. I noticed that when the selector changed position a loud click could be heard due to the microphonic nature and acoustics of the guitar. This wouldn't be enough to put me off though. Another great video.

I just recently purchased this same exact guitar model and color. I love the tone and playability of this model. Prior to this, I owned a standard Epi Casino in sunburst that was a beautiful guitar. Unfortunately, the heavy finish just left that guitar feeling dead and lifeless. I put Lollar P90s in it and still could not bond with it. So, I sold it and just figured the Casino wasnt for me. Then, on a whim I tried this one and was very pleasantly surprised. This is what i envisioned a Casino sounding like! So, I brought it home and I love it! Such a great guitar! Great review, as always!

Watching this one again, and must note that your playing was inspired on this one. I've listened to you let yourself go here at least a "musician's dozen" times, and have felt a tremendous lift upon each occasion. Thank you. edit: an idea or concept has formed in my head that I simply can't shake, so I must share it with you. The concept of "Guitaristas" and just whom, is one of them, and how. Namely, as to what could be done with your show to reduce costs of production, while also generating more engaging or curious "content". It strikes me, that being a Guitarista is in part a semi-formal inquisition into the nuanced componentry of a guitar, and that a good proportion of guitarists would love the chance to go through the "Guitaristas" process. What I'm driving at, is for you to host a fellow guitarist/Guitarista on your show, and have them bring one of their favorite guitars, which they're comfortable having put through the Guitaristas process of artistic inquisition. Them then going away from the experience, knowing more about their instrument than they did when they arrived, such as the pickup readings, neck profile, thickness, etc. Then maybe they do a little playing using your, or a dedicated Guitaristas pedalboard/amp setup, for more direct comparison between fellow Guitaristas instruments. Or, for that matter, between a guests numerous guitars(because most of us not only have more than one, but also more than one favorite) on their potential numerous visits. Some musicians, of course, would recoil at the idea of having their guitar partially taken apart, and gone over like you do with ones you but, but others, would love it!

I'm after one in natural finish (John Lennon fan here) but waiting to see if one comes up in the used market since new ones got fairly pricey down here in Mexico. Although to be honest, after watching this video I'm feeling curious about the ones with the worn finish, and a new one is about the same price as used one in natural or sunburst! Good review of the Chinese built Casino, I love the colour and it sounds great. I have a natural Epiphone Casino which was made in Korea in 2001 and your Chinese built one is very similar. My guitar has the same hardware but the pickup covers are chrome plated, ( you said that yours were nickel), the side edges of the front of the headstock on mine were masked giving it an attractive wood binding effect and I think that the shape is a little slimmer. About 10 years ago I noticed that the top was starting to delaminate! I used a syringe to inject white wood glue into the separation and clamped it up and haven’t had any further problems, the only other mishap was that the E fell off the pick guard never to be seen again. Like your guitar mine is completely hollow, there is however a “sound post” between the front and back under the bridge, I suspect that your guitar also has this but couldn’t see one on the video . My guitar sounds just like yours, at £399 I think that the new Epiphone Casino is an outstanding bargain.

No big deal, I actually prefer nickel to chrome, if I can find some black plastic covers like those used on early Gibson 330s I’d get some as I think that the metal covers take away a bit of top end. I forgot to mention that they used at least twice as much glue needed to glue the neck in as there are huge globs of it around the joint inside the guitar.

I love that the Beatles didn’t always play the most expensive top end gear (hand-made one offs, etc). The Beatle bass, for example, was not an expensive instrument, in many ways not that great an instrument. And he just sounded great on it, his way of playing brought out the best in it. He stuck with it until he split his time with his Rickenbacker bass in the later 60s. His original was stolen, but the replacement he got in the mid-60s he still plays, to this day. Just goes to show you, you can make incredible music on whatever you can afford at the time.

The bridge and studs on my Coupe were hideously loose and rattled something awful- clearly not the case on this guitar. The neck on mine is chunky and round; I’ve seen some made at the same factory with a different type neck so they vary. The electronics sucked in mine so I replaced them. Pickups in mine made and signed by Jason Lollar personally before he became really big. He custom made them for me to fit the polepiece spacing on the original chrome covers. Apparently the polepiece spacing on American models is different from the Asian models.

I have 2 Epiphone Casino worn, one Olive and one denin blue, both are from the Qingdao, China factory, made in October 2020. Both guitars have an ABR 1 style tune or matic bridge with thin posts, not the thick type that can be adjusted from the top with a screwdriver. It is the first difference that I see with your Casino Worn Olive, which has thick posts. Mine are literally similar in that detail to the Gibson ES330 or vintage Casino. Another detail to take into account: The Casino made in the USA have the neck inlays in the opposite direction to all the rest of Epiphone Casino, be they vintage, Korea, China, or contemporary. In my opinion, these are Casino Worn, they are very satisfactory, precise instruments, with excellent termination, a lot of resonance and another very curious detail: the P90's from both Casinos and an Epiphone SG Special Pelham Blue are very quiet ..! Much more than each and every one of my Gibson Les Pauls ..! Another difference that I see between my 2 Casino worn and his, is that the toggle switch in mine is in a position closer to the pickguard and the F holes are higher, more centered with the P90's, those of his Casino Worn are somewhat lower in position. Vintage Casinos are very inconsisten on the F hole and toggle swicht position

Hi Colin. The pots used by Epiphone these days are Asian-made metric versions branded CTS. In fact, there are indications that the Imperial CTS branded pots in many guitars (unlike Gibsons, of course, which although they MAY be made by CTS, or Bourne etc, are ‘Gibson branded’) are also likely to be made by CTS’s Asian facilities - like a lot of other components on many brands. Keeps the costs down and the profits up. In my experience the pots seem just as good as the (previous OR current? 🤔) US-made versions, unlike Epiphone’s toggle switches (loud and ‘clicky’) and, in particular, the wiring which is not of particularly brilliant quality. And, yes, all Casinos have a sodding great access hole beneath each pickup, obviating the need (as you know from your initial experience with the 335😩) to struggle, using the f-hole.

I was just watching this review again when a story about Lennon's Casino came to mind. A lot of people paid a premium for the "Lennon Casino" The story I've read is Lennon was in the midst of a pharmaceutical experiment when he got "busy mits" and started in sanding the finish off his Casino in order to give it a brighter tone...WHAT THE!!? Anyway, the story I read had Lennon dropping it off at a friend's who did guitar finishing and had the guitar properly sanded then sealed with some kind of clear coat, it actually looks like a matt clear to my eye. I read another story which claimed Lennon brought to the same friend and asked him strip it because, and again, he wanted to brighten up the tone. The stories are both plausible but I tend to believe the latter. Everybody loves a good classic effed up rock star story don't they? Still, I never understood the alleged reason, why would you want to screw with a perfect hollow body with two P90s in order to make it "brighter"?? I think Lennon just wanted his guitar to look different from Paul and George's which all had the same sort of tobacco burst finish. My favorite Beatles Casino riff is DRUM ROLL PLEASE...BUMPADUMP TSHHHHH!! THE OPENOING SALVO TO REVOLUTION!! There you have it cats, believe whatever you believe!! He removed the finish off the Casino...and his Gibson acoustic...on the advice of Donovan after being in India. He'd taught both McCartney & Lennon the basics of fingerpicking on Donovan's Martin. They liked the sound of his guitar and Lennon and Harrison both striped the finish off their Casinos. Lennon's Casino actually had another psychedelic finish on the back of the Casino during 67-early/mid 68 that was done by the Fool...same group that painted Clapton's SG & Lennon Gibson. The friend who help Lennon refinish a guitar was actually his Ric...the 3 pickup model he used on Sullivan. It was originally natural, but Lennon like black and his friend knew someone who did car refinishing and that's how the Ric became black. Allegedly, Lennon was talking about having the Casino refinished back to it's original sunburst finish before he was killed. Harrison's still is in it's sanded down condition.

Cheers Todd... smart move dude, order immediately and think about it later! 😂 so even if its a bit pricey in your part of the world the saving over a Gibson justifies feeling a bit smug and spending bit on upgrades if that's the way you go.

I just currently purchased this exact guitar. Like you, I love the look and color. Here in the states, they cost $500. Not a bad price for an Epiphone.

I used to have a 2006 Epi Casino with factory bigsby, according to the specs the nut was supposed to be 1.69" but in reality it was shy of 1.65", I could never get on with that skinny neck profile. Back then I think the pickups were extremely hot (13k+) and many used to have them rewound, it is good to see Epiphone has corrected these specs but I do not miss my Casino enough to buy another.

I had a 1964 Casino. There was no bracing inside at all except around the edges where the wood meets. The pickups hummed badly and the feed back was easy to produce. The tone was fantastic unlike any other guitar. I found it in the garbage set out to the street. I paid a luthier to clean and fix it. It needed strings one tuner and a new plug in along with a set up. It cost me $120 to get fixed. I played it for a few years and sold it to a friend for $200. I have no Idea what happened to it after that.

For 400 Quid , it's amazing. Overall, the budget guitar market has increased its quality 10 fold. Fair statement? When I was a kid in the 70s and 80's, the budget guitar market put out crap. I'm buying a lot of beautiful guitars niow for under 1000. :)

My 1997 Korean Casino (Peerless plant) has what I think is called a "sound post" i.e. a small block under the bridge, I'm guessing about 1/2" wide running the length of the bridge. I assume it's to reduce feedback but I guess that the bridge studs screw into it. Who knows, it might mean the whole bracing system is different. I've never been that impressed with it tbh. This one sounds a lot nicer - more open where mine is a bit dark/muffled despite pickup rewinds, new electronics etc. The Casino makes a cracking jazzbox too - stick some flats on and you're in Grant Green territory (he was an ES330 player). Also great for sitting about, watching telly etc. as they're feather-light with decent enough unplugged volume for practicing/noodling. So tempted by these. I like the worn finish - seems more tactile than the typical Epi thick gloss - but wish it came in natural, cherry or even sunburst. Would probably go for black! That said, I've only just subscribed to your channel and I'm lusting after a new Casino or the yellow Squier Mustang! It's clearly a dangerous place. Thanks for the cracking content.

I have a Casino I bought new in ‘97. It was made in ‘96 in Korea. Apparently Korean made ones are now sought after. To be honest, the finish isn’t great. Bit messy at the body/neck join. The pickups are very microphonic. But that gives a more vintage tone because guitars in the 60s weren’t wax potted. It rattles. Somewhere in the tailpiece I think. You only notice it when playing quietly. It feeds back very easily. Sometimes it’s nice, other times it’s annoying. The neck is chunky. Far chunkier than a Sheraton I played when I bought it and far chunkier than either my ‘97 Les Paul or 2016 SG or my Strat that has a soft-V profile or even a 60s Tele I’ve played. It’s a guitar you just want to play some days and then won’t pick up for months. But it’s cherry red and looks incredible. Stick it on a stand beside the Vox AC15 and it’s 1965. And tone wise it’s a match made in heaven.

Welcome to the Casino club! My early 2020 Casino differs from yours. Different pick-ups. I think they changed them sometime in 2020 to the "classic". Mine both read 11.80, which is similar to other older versions I've seen reviewed. Full size pots but not CTS branded. Mine's heavier at 6.50 lbs. And oh by the way I failed with the wiring harness switch, more my soldering skills - or lack there of! Should have listened to both you and Mick! "Don't do this! Leave it to the pros" Now in the hands of the professionals so I won't have it for a while (they are seriously back logged with repairs!)

@@theguitaristas Could be bracing. Or number of layers? You mentioned your top looked to be 2 layers. Standard Casino is 5 layers. There's a $150 price difference so they're saving costs somewhere...(hopefully not 4 months! -about 1 month)
