Epiphone Archtop Hollowbody Guitar Shootout
www.jackfossett...
/ jackfossett
The Casino Coupe and the ES339 Pro. Each are small body, affordable guitars that are great for studio, stage, home practice or just about any other application you can think of. The Casino Coupe is based on its big sister, the standard Casino, but utlizes the 339 body style to make it more comfortable, which also gives it a punchier tone and better access to the higher frets. Its fully hollow, and has dogear p90s which have a nice chime and growl. The ES339 pro is a semi hollow guitar, which will lessen some feedback issues, and also add sustain. It has dual humbuckers which can be coil tapped with push pull volume pots, which add to its versatility. For this demo we’ll play each pickup setting, first clean with a Keeley Hooke Spring Reverb, and then adding in a Chellee Guitars Odie Classic Overdrive for some bluesy tones. On the 339, I’ll play each setting first in humbucking mode, and then coil tapped. I’m plugged into a Marshall DSL40C using Sinasoid Slate Cables, and the amp is stereo mic’d with a Shure SM57 and Blue Encore 100i.

I played both in the store....couldn't decide, so bought both! Each definitely has it's own niche, so at the price here in Tokyo, I couldn't go far wrong. The "Pro Buckers" on the 339 are based on Gibson's "Burst Buckers", and I have found no reason to consider changing them. Both guitars are well put together, no sharp fret ends, lovely necks etc. Only gripe is a slightly rough finish around the f-holes on my cherry ES-339 Pro. The natural finish on the Casino Coupe is flawless. Great review Jack. Thanks very much .

Did you stay with 10's on the Coupe Jack, or haven't you had the chance to play around with different gauges as yet? The very experienced salesman mentioned that 11's can really bring it to life.

My dad gave me a wildcat with p-90s and I love it! I did a few things to it to get what I want from it and i have fallen in love with it. I play through a 71 deluxe reverb with a texas heat speaker and I simply can't imagine a better tone. Epiphone simply makes the best guitar for the money there is! People tend to think they are inferior because they are copied from Gibson and they may be to Gibson's top of the line but compared to their entry level stuff,I like my epiphone better. Just shows what a great company Gibson/ epiphone is

They are pretty close to the Gibson sound. Gibson ES 339 and 335 are a bit more clear and punchy. The Gibson might age better/ or might not. I'm not sure the Gibson is 10 times worth the price. One can do a lot with that left over cash and I don't think the average people you play for are going to care much one way or the other.

  • @JackFossett

An easy way to bridge that gap too is to upgrade the wiring. Better pots & caps will really open up some of that clarity. I haven't yet but I'm going to upgrade the wiring at least on the Coupe to 50s style with Paper in Oil capacitors. Gives more of an open, transparent, sort of woody tone.

Yes, you won't be able to avoid the noise since it is a single coil, and it will be worse with the more overdrive you use. If fact I just picked one up today a blackie, rental for now. I have played it just a bit clean through a vintage tube amp and I did not notice any unwanted noise, (but on low volumes since everybody is home). A noise gate may be needed for any appreciable gain. Also, since it is fully hollow, and not a semi, (and beautifully light), it will be subject to feedback the louder you play. But so far at low volumes just beautiful tones and I would add to its versatility as a jazz guitar too with the tone knob and some of the volume rolled off. Hope that helps. I also did not notice any noise on the vid (assuming no post processing), but either way it should be bit of a "hummer", as it is basically a big fat single coil.

That Savanna song is really good. Thanks for the comparison. I’ve got the 339 Pro and I love the feel, versatility and playability. One of my favorite guitars. Don’t have a Casino, Coupe or otherwise. I do have a Riviera 390. Semi hollow body with three (?!?) P90 pickups and a Bigsby trem. Beautiful guitar, but way too much going on for me to make sense of. Cheers brother. 👍

Just to add, my son and I have had our Casino Coupe for 12 months now and it's held up well, build quality is solid. Interestingly, we have the same amp as Jack here - DSL 40C Vintage Marshall and it works well with the Casino apart from if you get too close when it will feedback madly (hollow body) - JL managed to make use of it :) We looked at both these two guitars and I must admit I wanted the 335 / 9 because of the Chuck Berry / Clapton / Oasis thing, but we also love the Beatles and one thing that doesn't come out here is that you can get George's early jangly tones quite easily on the Casino without any effects. Been looking again recently at the Epiphone 335 / 9 Pro in cherry red :) at approx $550 in England, its a steal. I might have to chase that Bluesbreaker sound after all but the Casino is a keeper now.

Thanks so much! I'm a big Gary Clark Jr fan as well, in fact I played some GCJr inspired Hendrix in my Casino v Elitist video. As for strings - I think I'll go back to 10s on the Coupe. I may keep 11s on the 339. The pickups react differently to the different guages. Of course we're talking relatively minor tonal differences in reality, but psychological effect is nothing to sneer at with guitar playing. The more comfortable you feel with your playability and tone, the better playing you'll do :-)

So the cheapest way to start is upgrading the pots/wiring, and swapping out the cheap metal pickup covers for nickel ones (you can get them on ebay -- just measure and make sure the spacing is correct). If that doesn't get you to wear you want to be, my favorite two Casino pickup sets are Tyson Tone 53 Wraptails which I currently have in my Coupe (not in this video) or Righteous Sound Pickups King Streets.

The second someone with a guitar channel doesn't know the difference between "coil tap" and "coil split", or thinks they're interchangeable terms for the same thing, they're done. When you use the push/pull pot on a guitar to engage "coil splitting", you are turning off half of the humbucker, effectively "splitting" the two single coils it consists of into one single coil pickup. When you use the switch to "coil tap" a single coil, you are activating an actual "tap" into the coils of that single coil to change the rating on it by reducing the number of windings - for example taking a pickup rated at 13.6 down to a 9.2. To me it's the equivalent cringe of someone calling a Honda Civic a truck. Yeah, they're kinda similar in that they both have four wheels and such, but a Civic isn't a truck. (Technically you can tap a humbucker, but I've seen one single application of it since I started playing guitar back in '82, and it was a gimmick on an off-brand Les Paul copy that no one had bought yet. That one stayed on the wall during my visit to that store.)

Thats hard to say actually... from a tech standpoint, I don't know if they actually pick up the same or a different level of noise, however, I do find p90s to be more egregious as they're higher output. Generally with a Casino I don't use much gain which limits the noise anyway though.

Thanks very much for the reply! Did you change the speaker in the Marshall amp? I was thinking they come with a Celestion speaker, but I really don't know. Also, do you have opinions about which of the two guitars would round out some country and jam band music? Clayton Mitchell (with Kenny Chesney) seems to play humbucker pickups for that high sustain, but P90s sound really good on the bridge position. I used to have the regular sized casino with P90s and got some nice Jerry Gracia Band sounds out of that. I'm currently playing a tele, just want to add in some other sounds to the mix. Cheers!

For live playing, the 339 is probably more friendly in a band situation if only for its feedback control. I personally prefer the Casino, however it has more limited tones/uses and can cause feedback issues in an indoor band setting.

Jack Fossett you can add the right combination of effects to make a distorted Tele sound like a distorted les Paul. You cannot make a clean Tele sound like a clean Les Paul. I am asking for more of the sound I can’t change and less of the sound I can. I and I would hope others would prefer to hear the clean essence of the instrument, that’s why we buy different guitars.

  • @JackFossett

    @JackFossett

    5 жыл бұрын

@@acrscott No, I don't agree with that at all. You can definitely make a tele sound similar to a Les Paul clean, and using overdrives doesn't erase a guitar's character. I used a basic overdrive and reverb on identical settings for each, that in no way manipulates either guitars' character in an indiscernible way - in fact I think they both sound very unique with the overdrive. The 339 is extremely common for blues and rock, and the Casino (albeit its big brother) was made famous by the Beatles & Stones -- all of which calls for at least basic overdrive, if not even heavier, along with clean.
