Epicly Later'd: Ed Templeton (Part 1)
Ойын-сауық
Ed Templeton has been a super-obvious choice for Epicly Later'd since the early days of the show. Maybe that's why it took so long for us to do it. The man is like a skate historian-one benefit of his relatively straight-edge lifestyle is that he has what we like to call "sober memory." He can recall everything from his life growing up in Huntington Beach, California, onward. He also had no boundaries in terms of how personal he would go for our interview. This episode was a big one for us. Enjoy!

Man for a guy that had such a history of abuse, poverty to make it as one of the best street skaters ever and to continue operating Toy Machine is just friggin epic to me. So many "better" board brands have gone defunct but Ed kept pushing this weird company with like a blood sucking monster and today they have some of the best skaters ever, even better than Thomas, Muska, Bam and so on back in the day. I know that I have absolutely no relation to Ed but I have to say I am kind of proud of him, and I know its weird of me saying this but I`m so glad he found his bliss in life and that Toy Machine hasn`t died.

jason dill is the man. i remember him from skate 1 when giovannia reda was like be careful he's a weirdo lol.
Growing up in Huntington i van confirm two things said here. 1 he was called ollie Ed. The guy i heard it from said they made fun of him cuz all he would do was ollie. 2 his mom was a sweet lady. She saw me skating by myself once at a little kids park where I was skating on a curb and she asked if I ever heard of him. I said of course and she said that was her son.
Does anyone find it crazy so many pro skaters came out of the same group of neighborhood kids?
@marudoethiopia

Jovan TrendMaker Yeah, I see what you mean but with bands it's only natural that a collective thing would form from a natural group. My impression of skating is that success is totally individual- Ed could do very little for his friends when he got signed yet many all individually became pro skater.

A GOOD dad is an important part of one's life whether people want to acknowledge it or not. Seeing those old boards and videos remind me of my old skate days 86-92, here in my home town 99% of businesses were closed on Sunday so we had free rein of all these parking lots man it was fun!
anybody that was skateboarding in the 90's will understand the importance of this guy! just watch the movie "welcome to hell" and try not to get your mind blown ;)

And some of the early 2000's, he's very important to skateboarding.
man i miss skateboarding. the quiet reflection of life hanging out at a 3 set outside of some random park or school. drinking beer with friends. having lifes problems drowned out and distracted by the focus of not breaking my ass on the landing. those were good times
I'm glad Vice continues to upload Epicly Later'd videos even though they don't get nearly the amount of views the other videos typically do.

Awesome work Vice. Fuck the haters.
YO HOW TF DID I WATCH THIS RIGHT AFTER “SOAP OR DIE”😂😂😂😂😭😭😭😭
Ed is so fucking chill which is in itself an art form. God bless u Ed, I love your skating
These Epicly Latere'd are the best thing on KZread. I grew up idolizing these guys and never knew any of their stories.
Ed is one of those amazing, singular souls that is no less human in his greatness and no less great for his weaknesses... I am always pleased to "see" him and stoked I came across this :)
brilliant!!! toy machine was one of my favorite skate companies back in the 90´s (when i used to skate)... glad to see ed.. hope his leg recovers.. thanx vice for such a flashback!!
Awesome. One of my favorite guys in the skate industry. Hope this is a long series of Epicly Later'd with him!
I know absolutely nothing about skating, so it's really fascinating to see some of its origins and culture
I never saw welcome to hell until about 6 months to a year ago, and his part in there made me start skating again.
The 50-50 grind to 360 varial out that Templeton pulled at the end of his part in Welcome to Hell remains one of the best tricks done on a skateboard, imo

I remember watching The New Deal's "Useless Wooden Toys" over and over again, to the point that the tape almost melted. No matter how tired and beat up I was, I'd watch these tapes and I was ready for more. Big up to Ed. He was an inspiration, and still is.
si many british skaters wanted to live in so cal in the heart of skateboarding , i wore my copy of Ban This out freeze framing trying to work out the tricks , really happy for Ed that hes a successful photographer and made it after a hard life , his photos and books are great and like the vid shows him and that generation really pushed skateboarding forward , street shredding , steps , huge flips , its pure athletic genius , a true sk8 god ! ED I SALUTE YOU !
Ladies and gentlemen, this was another excellent video presented to you by the one and only VICE. God I love this channel. Thank you so much for sharing. Can't wait to watch part 2.

The skating stuff is fine, but they constantly push commie ideology, and divisive identity politics, demonizing all conservatives who have a differing opinion.
One of my heros in when I was a teen skating. Loved his boards and style. Great post.
8:53 being from southern CA and a skateboarder in the early 90s this makes perfect sense to me. I imagine that people that aren't from the US or that time will see this as weird gibberish.
Favorite videos on Vice.. Thanks!
I grew up around Huntington Beach and we'd always seed Ed killing at the now R.I.P. HB Skate Park in the early 90s. Fond memories of everyone just stopping skating and just watching Ed in awe during sundown at that park.
I find myself watching Welcome To Hell every couple of years and Ed's part just gets better and better. I used to just skip it to get to Thomas' part (and the slam section) sooner.
I remember my Toy Machine Monster shirt. I bought that shirt because I saw Ed wearing it. Ahhh, I miss mid to late 90's street skating. Since I lived in Mississippi, there weren't too many of us. This was before the internet, so most had no clue the impact skateboarding was having. There were only 3 skateboarders at my high school, and only because I got them into it. They were long-time friends, so they followed me.
Cool story! Why would anyone thumbs down this video?

Bitter freestyle skaters. "Ed killed freestyle man!!"
I loved Ed. He was like me. Lanky and awkward but he was so skilled. He gave guys like me the motivation to push ourselves during an era that was amazing. I spent weeks learning impossible and pressure flips in the late 80’s. Early 90’s. My down fall was I never wanted to leave that era. I loved the old raw new age and feared the tech movement and tiny boards and wheels. I’ll never forget my first Schmitt stixx board and my sma board. Though I did love the black label era.
"I was like scared and happy" lmao
Great episode. Thanks for this. I remember seeing Ed on a Sk8 TV episode way waaaay back in the early 90's.
Such a cool guy, hes a huge inspiration to my skating and photography. Makes me wanna not be afraid to take pictures of people on the street
8:55 this is why i love jason dill
this was awesome so glad you did this
They should have made this a 40 parter. GOD DAME SON!
eds skate shoe from 98/99 was the BEST...i wish they'd make a re issue of that
Your documentaries are awesome ..... Keep up the good work
I wish epicly laterd still made videos!
Can't wait for the rest!
I recently met Ed on HB Pier a few months back. He's a chill ass dude

Right on man good to see this Ed's been around and really pushed the street skate shit a lot like Lee and Barbee I looked up to those dudes from watching all of their videos when I was a little fukker
Great video!
9:00 “he might as well have fucking levitated” lmao
Oh my fucking god this is right where I live, I remember seeing a camera crew walking around with this guy! Nice to see my town in a VICE doc :)
I had that same green PS Stix Danger deck just like the one at 8:12 when i got my first board in 88 or 89.
I skated with this dude at centennial skatepark in santa ana. Back on 02. Solid dude!
Back in the 90's Ed Templeton's part in Welcome to Hell just inspired a whole new level of skating for me and my buddies. We even switched from wearing the dumb super baggy jeans to rocking Dickies that rode just above the top of the shoe haha. I hope they cover that Toy Machine video in Part 2 :)
Ed is super chill, even at the LBC premiere Suffer the Joy when shit was hectic he kept his cool. Luckily I had also gone to the Good and Evil premiere a few years earlier, met him there as well. Skate on, Ed.
Epicly later'd Jim Greco ??? what you reckon vice ?
I was just like “Hey Don come check this out” then I pulled an impossible down the 4 stair and he was like “...Fuuuccckkk”
This was just pure awesome!
All I remember of Ed Templeton was him in Welcome to Hell doing sick boardslides and his big 58 mm wheels when small wheels were the trend. Also him wearing trucker hats way before they were cool. He was just weird.
Dill talking about Mark Gonzales levitating is so good
Great.. From hustling stickers to shooting Leica Cool story!
Went from riding Cab to Barby, to Lee then the floodgates opened we had shops giving us boards.
Dill, "I was like scared and happy and like freaked out all at the same time". That's exactly how I felt when I saw my first ollie.
He resonates with my soul
WE LOVE YOU ED!!!
One of childhood hero. Jason Lee, Guy mariano, Ed and many more. Hat down!!
If you get pissed at someone for taking a photo of you, do you also get pissed when people just look at you? Cause basically they just captured the moment they saw you, what's it to be mad about.

Taking a picture can be considered an invasion of privacy, depending on the photo's use. These people don't know whether they're gonna be on the front page of some high-traffic website as the subject of ridicule or part of some stalker's photo album. They are most definitely not the same. Are you always this simple-minded?

I'm gonna get an old school board and practice that freestyle stuff, thats dope!!
Ed has always been on my top 10 of pro skaters glad I found this
fav episode
He is right, my parents were crazy, i just had to leave the house and skateboarding found me and i skated for about 14 years, late 80s all through the 90s.
So good

Wen u got a group of guys with the same dream it's bound to come true

Love Ed and Toy Machine will always be my fav skate company \m/
You don’t understand the second I saw Gonz it was like oh my god that’s Gonz! Then it was like that that was Gonz? And then I look over and he was Gonz ...
please make Epicly Laterd with Stefan Janoski!!
Ed was one of the first to do front foot impossible on street board I remember that.
I remember when I learned how to impossible when I was 10 years old then I did it down a 3 stair I was super stoaked!
It's sad, I can see so much pain flowing from Ed's soul thru his eyes w every word he speaks. It really sux. I share some of his same pain and regret being a 38 yr old father of 3.
Looking like best epicly later'd yet
Nice!
Yeah! Cool angle!
FUCKING excellent! i need more, where is part 2?
That dude is tweeeeeking 😂
