Kathy's introduction to EPICA, Lulu and Donna saw one other song. Dutch symphonic metal band, this was at the Omega Alive virtual concert in 2021. The online concert when they couldn't tour due to restrictions. Kingdom of Heaven part 3 is from the 8th album, Omega, released not long before this show. Lead singer Simone Simons and guitarist Mark Jansen with the primary harsh vocals. The portable keyboard is a REVO-1 Curveboard , made by Nu-Motion in Montreal Canada. Sorry Lulu, the bald guy, keyboardist Coen Janssen, is already married. lol

The guitarist, that does the growls, Mark Jansen, years ago was a founding member of a band called After Forever that featured Floor Jansen on vocals (no relation as Jansen is quite a common name in the Neatherlands) Mark left after the second album and formed Epica

Epica are a Dutch band and are known for the elaborate stage shows Simialr to Nightwish in style and Floor has been known to sing with them As she and epicas singer are old friends

Omega Alive was Epica’s live stream during lockdown. It was recorded over five days to incorporate the elaborate set changes but each song was a single live take so what you are watching is, effectively, a live performance.

I confirm! I'm crazy Nightwish fan but what I really need is listen two the best sides of symphonic metal: beauty and gentle Nightwishes music (well, mostly) and powerful and dynamic Epica's one (mostly, aswell). And one more thing, when I hear Floor and Simone are singing I'm in Kingdom of Heaven🤘

Thank you for the reaction! I chose this one because i feel it best captures all the different sides of Epica in one song. Like Nightwish, you can pretty much close your eyes then point to a random Epica song and not be disappointed. Some of my personal favorites are Design Your Universe from the Retrospect concert, In All Conscience from Omega Alive, and Rivers from AFAS featuring Apocalyptica.

I remember listening to their album 'The Quantum Enigma' (title piqued my curiosity) but strangely never looked beyond that small sample (even though as a whole the album was a masterpiece). Nice to return to this metal band after a number of years. Regards Tabitha

You should. They don't have any weak album. You can listen to all of them, they are brilliant. You should also be able to notice the difference in Simone's voice on the earliest albums. Incredibly beautiful operatic vocals.

Well .... had I paid $100 for a seat at the Royal Albert Hall in London for a synergy concert where Symphony Orchestra meets Heavy Metal I wouldn't have been disappointed! An AWESOME performance! My surprise and own reaction were mirrored perfectly in Kathy's face.❤

It's interesting how the comment sections under Epica videos on many reaction channels fill up with comments referencing another band and their singer, as if proximity to those is what gives legitimacy to Epica. Epica can stand on their own feet, by the strength of their songwriting and skill in performing. A few suggestions: Unleashed (Retrospect or AFAS Live) Design your Universe (Retrospect) Consign to Oblivion (The Zenith) Sancta Terra (Retrospect - featuring Floor Jansen)

Saw them open for Sabaton in 2022 and they tore the roof off the place. This here is one HELL of a band. Try Rivers next (Live with Apocalyptica is best) for something completely different and moving from them. This band is magic.

I was thinking you guys had reacted to the live Epica performance of "Sancta Terra", but maybe not. Recommended. They perform with a full orchestra, and Floor Jansen makes a special guest appearance. She and Simone, the lead vocalist here, are good friends and at one time were roommates...

Lulu : "It looks like they bent it with a cutting torch". ... I can see the gears working in her head.... make sure you've got a fire extinguisher near the ol family upright piano. Lulu's fixin to makes some Barn Technology Modifications. Epica is a band full of complicated music that is, at the same time, very listenable. They have been my goto source for music in the past year or so. Please, enjoy.

Fabulous! Epica are on the Nightwish level. I was slightly confused as Donna and Lulu reacted to Epica recently but gave no indication in this video, and their recent reaction seemed like a first time reaction! Nonetheless you are now on an epic journey.

I enjoyed! I have a ticket to one of the Amsterdam shows, and tickets to both Mexico City shows. Arguably, Epica is the biggest symphonic metal band in the world. I love Nightwish, but their music mostly relegates the orchestra to the backing track. Epica does live shows with a full symphony orchestra.

Coen, the keyboard player started losing his hair, and having a receding hairline isn't very rock. So he decided to stay shaving his head. For a next song, i would suggest Unleashed from the Retrospect concert. They performed with a full orchestra and choir.

The example of Nightwish with Tarja cannot be ignored. Epica, founded in 2002, is significantly harder than Nightwish and is one of the most successful symphonic metal bands today. Compared to Nightwish, Celtic Folk is particularly missing, which reinforces the classical component. The video is from a DVD made during the pandemic. Concerts weren't possible, so they did this lavishly produced one. It wouldn't be as feasible live or wouldn't work as well. The keyboardist used to ride around the stage with a keyboard mounted on a Segway. Apparently he has now been banned from doing this and it is now mounted on a rail with which he can at least change sides of the stage. If he wants to go further, he uses the semicircular keyboard. He once had long hair on his head. But then the typical male pattern of baldness struck and he reached for the razor.
