Epica is my favourite Symphonic Metal band, they really emphasise the Metal sound well and contrast is superbly with the Symphonics, for me no other band melds the contrasting soaring beauty and deep aggression as well as these folks, and they have amazing shows and are really approachable as well. Superb band.

Hi Bisscute! The growling guy is Mark Jansen, remember this name. He's the founder and mastermind of Epica. Simone was his girlfriend at the time she joined the band. Just check this interview from 2005 when they were still a couple :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/h4ln2LSph668oso.html Interviews like this help you to better connect with band members. Mark was first in a band called After Forever, together with Floor Jansen. That's where Floor met Simone for the first time, when Mark brought her to one of their concerts or rehearsals, I don't remember exactly. When Mark left AF (was kicked out from his own band), he formed Epica. Also remember RETROSPECT. This was their 10th anniversary concert, obviously with live orchestra and choir on stage. It's one of the best (if not the best) performances you will ever see in the symphonic metal subgenre. The concert lasted for 3 hours and Simone was 3 months pregnant at the time. You can even see her little baby bump in the video. Props to her for pulling off such a great performance! Yes, Epica use lots of tempo changes and different time signatures. The fastest part in this song is basically a black metal. That fast drum beat is called blast beats, it's typical for black and death metal. Although Epica is primarily a symphonic metal band, they incorporate some black and death metal elements into their music. Generally they are heavier than Nightwish, but they also have many wonderful ballads that can make you cry. I hope you're going to react to much more Epica! This band is incredible. You have no idea how much there is to discover :)

Not related to Floor Jansen, but Mark and Floor used to be in the same band for a while.

Maybe now is a good time to go right to the beginning of Epica 10 years before the current video. The first song the released was "Cry for the Moon". There is a nice video of it here : kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2tr1q6fm8y8nps.html . Cry for the Moon has become their classic that they keep playing on their concerts till today. You can see how young they all were at that time. BTW the guy growling is Mark Jansen, the founder of Epica and the main creative mind, even though all band members actively participate in the song creation. Like others already said, Makr was part of the band "After Forever" before together with Floor Jansen. Simone, the singer, was his girlfriend at that time, and was at first reluctant to sing for Epica (because of her shyness).

The guy growling is Mark Jansen, he and Floor were in After Forever. A song to react to; Floor and sister Irene + After forever, song is "Who I Am".. 2007.

In case you didn't notice, "Chasing the Dragon" is about drug addiction, like in the movie "From Hell" which Simone quotes in the intro to this song. And yeah, as others have said she was 3 months pregnant in this concert, you can see some of her "incipient belly" in the dress she's wearing here. The show was to celebrate 10 years of the band and it's 3-hours long, it's an amazing performance from all of them and the orchestra and choir too...top notch really If you want to continue with this Retrospect show a good place could be "Design Your Universe", another great epic track

My favorite band with my favourite singer 😁.

One of my favorite bands, second only to Nightwish. Their catalogue is very deep and composed of epic symphonic pieces of work and gorgeous emotional ballads. The gentleman growling is Mark Jansen and was in Floor's first band After Forever for a few years before leaving to found Epica. For more Epica recommend Design Your Universe from the same Retrospect concert, Essence of Silence live from Brussels, and Kingdom of Heaven PT 3 from Omega Alive live stream. Epica, Nightwish , Within Temptation are basically the holy trinity of bands that truly inspired lots of women to listen to metal music and become metal musicians themselves.

LOVE Nightwish….but Epica is just supernatural! Love epica’s heavy vibes! They do numerous huge shows with full orchestra and chorale…wish Nightwish would do that just once. The COVID virtual concerts of NW and Epica were great, but Epica’s one has to admits was OVER the top compared to NW gig. Within Temptation’s was absolute fire too!

I've seen them 3 times and just so amazing live. Great musicians backed by really good vocalist. Their latest album is so good!!

Epica is Epic (well deserved name for the band). Harsh Vocals Mark Jansen, no relation to Floor Jansen, he is ex-After forever member (Floor's first band). Being familiar with all their stuff, they still keep me amazed by their talent and epicness, which is just keep growing for almost 20 years. It’s like too much to be from this world, especially when you realize they have about 10 masterpieces in this scale, ballads that will make you cry, countless top-notch badass songs, great covers, orchestral and acoustic versions, insightful lyrics and great stage presence.. enough talent for 20 bands combined. And.. they’re so down-to-earth and generous to their fans. Great Reaction Bisscute !!!!! 🤘😎🤘.

i have not seen them once even though i am a Dutchman lol. i wanted to go to Eindhoven metal meeting a couple of years back. they did a collaboration with Floor Jansen you can see that show on youtube. Wish i had gone.

The only thing I don't like is that I wasn't at this venue at this time 😅 I've seen them a few times in Munich, they are really cool 🤘🤘🤘

As other said, this song is about drug addiction. There is a myth on some Epica fanbase that, you get the full meaning of the song by changing all "Dragons" for "Drugs," I did it once and it really made sense, but as I said, it's a myth among us fans. Funny note, just this week, I was relearning this song on guitar, it's such a gem to play it too. BTW. I'm campaigning for my band to play this song, let's hope I can convince them.

It's mostly butt hurt men really seriously seen it with Visions of Atlantis and Nightwish they don't like the Female being a lead they litterally say it. Visions of Atalntis some guy said he liked guys voice better all the comments were what are you talking about the female is the lead because she has more power and is when band blew up. It was a bunch of guys too as well just to really make it hit home Symphonic metal is the most popular Genre besides Hip-Hop on Itunes and Spotify and KZread Music.

No, it creates contrast. Epica often use this duality called 'beauty and the beast'. After all, it's a metal band, not a pop band. The song is about drug addiction, so it has some dark part. This is what Mark's lyrics say: "Give me what I want Give me what I need right now That's what I want That's what I need, get it!" It's like the voice of the addiction itself, that's how I understand it.
