Since my audience wanted me to make an bearded Viking axe I decided to make one and here it is.
I used beech wood from an old table from school for axe head,
handle is made out of pine and stained with Palisander tint (Brazilian rosewood) and charred with a candle :)
The technique for aged metal first to seal it with sealer (in my case it is Nitro lacquer) then spray 2 or 3 coats of silver spray and then black from far away.
When that step is done it's gonna look like cast iron, and then trick is to apply the paint thinner on piece of cloth and lightly spread it on until you are happy with look :)
I hope that you will enjoy this project and if you have any other questions please comment down bellow or you can send me a message via Instagram (Epic Workshop).

You, sir, are an ARTIST. I loved the forced distress on the axe. Especially dinging up the sides with a hammer knowing the paint will pick it up. New viewer here. If you keep making videos like this one, I'm staying. Thank you.

This is AMAZING!!

After watching your videos about the shield and the Ulfberht my morale dropped down, but it is now that it has reached its deepest level. I also like to craft wooden swords in my father's workbench, I made a claymore, a kite shield, a seax... and I put a lot of love in all of then, thinking "I made it myself, it is the best wooden sword in the world and no one I know has even dare to do this". And then, 2 days ago, while i was carving the handle of a replica of Skallagrim's messer, I discovered this channel (I use to hear music through youtube when I am working on something). I realized that I am nothing compared to you. You make them look real, even "battle-tested" and I don't even paint the sword's blade. But today I decided to let those bad feelings fade away. You are far better than me, so be it. I didn't wanted to be the best in the first place, and now that I can learn from someone that is willingly to share this "making of" videos so I can improve my skills. So, finally, thank you very much for posting this kind of videos. You are great. PD.: How can I use the wood brush as you do? Mine doesn't perform as good as yours.

I would appreciate it if you could send me some pictures via Instagram and I would be very happy if I can help you with anything :) And please don't be depressed, I am currently watching how to record my own music and I think that I sunk to the bottom of deepest sea....hahaah but I can do it :) Have a nice day and take care ~Moris~

Excuse me, i have a some question about painting. I'm making some similar thing myself in this moment. I'd like obtain similar efect. At first step you painted the axe by steel colour paint. At next step you used black paint. After this you used thinner. My first question - Did you used acrylic paints to painting? The second question - When i will use thinner to obtain efect like you, i will not remove painted surface completely? Thank you in advance for your answer. Greatings from Poland :)
@EpicWorkshop
16 күн бұрын
Hey, Yeah I used acrylic paint, when using thinner you have to just melt the black coat, be sure to not over soak it. Good luck with your project 😊

+Drew Wilson I know all of these things and I forged before (with hairdryer) but the problem was place because of noise, I made crossbow bow out of car leaf spring (Great metal, of course) there is a lot more than just forging for me 🤔 but One day you will see it on my channel 😊 I HOPE! 🤘 Moris

Awesome video and the axe looks so real when finished. I'm making my own short axes and one long axe the same way you have done it, I was wondering what kind of spray paint are you using e.g is matt or acrylic . Also I have used pine for the axe heads, do think this wood is too soft and I should use beech instead.
@EpicWorkshop
7 жыл бұрын
+Robert McIntyre Thank you very much for kind words and great question :) Yeah I used acrylic sprays (both of them) I never tried with mat spray, and yes I definitely recommend using beech wood because I also before making bearded axe (from beech) made rough pine axe... I sent it to Valhalla pretty soon hahah (aka scrap box) Be sure to send me some photos via Instagram I would be happy to see it :) Have a nice day bro Moris
