Epic Seal Rescue - Must Watch

This rescue is what we have been training for.
Naude and Antoine spotted a seal in dire need of help. There was a thick role of fishing line wrapped around her neck. But she was also very far away, she was on the other side of a little valley, on the rocks, behind other rocks, amongst thousands of seals, all of them were expected to run into the water once we started chasing them. Originally we wanted to record it as entanglement sighting, which is code for impossible rescue due to the location or size of a seal. But we tried anyways, luckily.
To us, this was probably our most intense rescue so far. It involved 2 hours of observing and planning, a long stalk, an accidental seal attack from above, some slipping on the rocks with cuts and bruises for Naude, and Katja and the kids on the walkway on watch to report any movement of the entangled seal, to make sure we would not lose sight.
In the end, we got "lucky" because the seal's entanglement was hooked on a rock, and we could get to her and save her life.
This rescue is one of our favorite rescues of all times, it is a reward for all our hard work over the years. Even a few months ago, we would not even have attempted this. 🦭

I think a small investment in bicycle helmets to wear when working on slippery rocks is in order! Also, the cameras can mount to the helmets easily. Please don't end up in the hospital with head trauma. The seals need you all!

They normally don't do it off these rocks, it's sandy beach for the most part, so helmets are not needed, but I totally agree about the cameras. He uses it for collecting information for research (not just to show us), but there's just gotta be a better way to do it.

While chasing them in dense groups, they have to dodge being bitten by other seals. They have to run on rocky and slippery terrain at times. Sometimes the “thank you “ that they get is a nasty deep bite that requires medical attention with medication after wrestling a large seal and rescuing it. I think it would be easier for them to vacation in Bali a couple of times a year.

A true hero of saving these seals. Yes, that was some adventure by far. Hope you were OK after that. God bless you, you even found the strength to giggle a bit, with cuts and scrapes and sore bum. I am always amazed at the length you will take to free these gifts of life.

OMG, I laughed (not AT you, Naude), cried when she was free, and found myself tensed up while you were maneuvering her. What an adventure ! " Stay, stay, stay...good seal." ..... Save the net." Thanks for your perseverance and for sticking with her. Another rescue for the books. Job well done ! Happy Saturday. 💜❤

My stars this was amazing!! The extreme time and stealth required just for plotting this rescue was unbelievable. Then Naude getting knocked over by the seal then sliding down the rocks twice!! I really hope that you are ok from that 💖 That poor seal though, what a terrible entanglement that got her trapped yet saved her life! This video is _the_ blockbuster of your channel 😊 Thank you so much for what you, Naude and family and Antoine 💖💖💖
