Epic Restoration of a 19th Century German Bread Cutter - ASMR
In this video, I restored an old rusty bread cutter made in Germany.
More about the restoration process:
It was very challenging, like always, but rewarding. I learned a lot about bread cutters.
The blade was highly rusty, with a considerable layer of rust that required extensive hand sanding and patience to regain its usable shape.
I encourage you to watch this video to learn more about this antique German bread cutter.
When I saw it, I was impressed at how bad it looked. It was full of rust, layers of random paint, and a few cracks. The wood was utterly gone and eaten by time and bugs.
The most challenging part was the crack repair. This time, I chose to do it differently-a method anyone can use. This is especially true since cast iron is hard to fix, and not everybody has a welding machine or knows how to use the brassing method.
The most beautiful part was the woodworking after cleaning, repairing, and painting everything. I chose pearwood as the hardwood for this project.
The wood was cut and engraved with a Falcon 2 Engraving and Cutting Machine; if you want to learn more about it, you can do it here: s.zbanx.com/r/QX6jpI9ekWjk
Use code: NEWFALCON
I loved the results, and the burnt wood effect on the sides was terrific. Then I applied some Swedish wood oil, and the pear wood started to show its unique texture.
After the blade was cleaned and polished, I assembled the old bread guillotine and made a test for you! It worked perfectly!
I hope I have caught everything, but if you have any questions, you can comment, and I'll get back to you! I always do!
Cheers! Johnny.

Hi folks! After a long "fight" of rust and layers of old crispy paint, woodworms, and worn-out screws, I think I won the battle! 😅 I'm very pleased with the result, and I hope you will like it, too! Thank you for all your support and for watching my work! Cheers! Johnny!

I once read a story featuring a bread guillotine like that. I don't remember much of it, and it's totally out of context, but somebody may find it interesting. The bit I remember is told by a baker's daughter, and it goes like this: 1940, right after the German occupation of France, some German soldiers walked into their bakery somewhere in France. The French obviously weren't too friendly towards the Germans, but when the young German soldiers walk in the door, they are friendly enough, say bon jour, and are generally just normal, nice guys. One of them pulls out a small dictionary, flicks through it and says "pain!" (bread). So what is she to do? Anger a few perfectly nice, armed men belonging to the group currently in charge? So although her mother frowns at her mightily, she pulls a loaf off the rack and presents it to the soldiers. The soldier flicks through his dictionary again, points to the bread cutter and says "partager!"(divide) So she puts it into the bread cutter and under his fascinated scrutiny, cuts it into slices. He flicks through the dictionary again, points at the bread cutter and says "perfectioné!" (perfect) meaning it's a great machine, and smiles at her. She writes down the price for him, he pays, and with a smile, says "Au revoir". She smiles back. As soon as the door closes on him, she gets a monstrous slap from her mother: "Where do you get off smiling at him! He's the enemy! Bad enough you sold them bread!", "But mother, what was I to do? Say no to armed men? And then what? Besides, he was nice and polite, was I to be rude to him just because he's German?" And that, unfortunately, is all I remember.
Gut gemacht 🙌

It dawned on me that the paste is better for energy consumtion, looks more fun to do and is quicker because of the grinding factor when welding. Thanks for the video
Zawsze jestem zaskoczony, gdy świeżo szlifowany żeliwo jest srebrne zamiast czarne! 😺 I’m always surprised when freshly sanded cast iron is silver instead of black!😺
Bread must have been tough as wood back then to require that to cut it 😮

Country breads in western and central Europe contained all kinds of hearty things, from rye and barley to seeds, nuts, and legumes. Also, before everyone owned a home oven it was common for villages to have a communal oven, with subscribing households given a block of time during which they'd bake everything they needed for the week. You can imagine that by the end of the week their bread might have been a little hard and stale.

Truly does look great, especially love the combo of black and gold! Though if I may give some constructive criticism? the burnt edges from the laser. It looks a little half done. Reminds me of a painting where the artist has not bothered to paint the edges of the canvas. Either you should've made the edges entirely burnt/black, or sanded them down to natural wood color.

Thank you. If you see that I let them like this, It means I wanted them like this. I love how the line in the middle remained. Try to understand the artist, not to judge it only because you'll do it differently. Cheers 🥰

1:25 These are called castellated nuts and were designed to be locked by a pin or wire that is passed through a hole in the bolt. They are still in use today especially in the aerospace industry as the bolts can be locked with a wire held in place with a numbered lead seal. This allows service personnel to be aware of the items service history.

Zawsze myślałem, że "gilotyna" była używana do urządzenia rewolucji francuskiej, a następnie używana jako slang do krajalnic. Ale to się naprawdę nazywa gilotyna?! 😼 I always thought “guillotine” was used for the French revolution device, and then used as slang for slicers. But it’s really called a guillotine?!😼

Although the stylised writing looks good. It makes it difficult for certain people to read. A simple text like OCR A, is easy to see for everyone

Thank you. No, it is a bread cutter, and it works how it should; the blade is very sharp; if you touch it with your finger and press a little, you'll remain without 😅 Maybe your expectations on how should cut are different. A rotary one works in a way, but this is a guillotine, so it is expected to cut and crush at the same time 😀 Maybe something like a cucumber can be cut as you imagine, but not crispy bread/baguette.

I understand you, but I do not fully agree with what you said. There are plenty of unique videos. I have quite a lot of videos that nobody did it ever on KZread. Even though the topic may repeat, each restorer has their own techniques, and there is always something new to learn. Also, the items can have different troubles (for example, in this video, I showed how cracked cast iron can be repaired without welding or brazing). Watch it, and you will understand why I can't agree with your assumption. Cheers
