Epic Metal Sculptures Made From Recycled Scrap Metal. Scrapfest event recap featuring metal art.

Welcome to the first edition of Weld In The Groove, our new series covering events across the country. We made our way to Lansing, Michigan to check out Scrapfest, a scrap metal art festival where each piece was created out of scrap metal sourced from Friedland Industries. With teams from all across the country joining in each with a unique metal sculpture showing off their creativity. We got to chat with them about the creative process, heard their approach to rust removal from metal, and talked to the organizers of the event to hear how the festival started.

Steels in my blood. Jokingly i can almost smell steel hiding in the weeds. Im 63 yo and can remember even before I was old enough to attend school watching dad build things. Mostly farm equipment repairs and trailer wagon builds. All these years later I have his tools and memories to go with them.

To go from picking through junk all the way to presenting beautiful metal sculptures is an incredible experience and what everyone showcased is nothing short of phenomenal. Thank you WELD, Beau and Warren for taking the time to shed some light on ScrapFest and all it has to offer. See you all next year! 🤖 💀

Thanks for the coverage. Think it would have been more interesting to ask Bob Welton about how he created the lovely color finish on his Peacock sculpture as opposed to making him strut like a peacock.

I’m in between Flint and Lapeer Michigan. I have been trying to get into the welding industry for about a year now. And I can’t find any one to give me a chance to lean the industry. I do have a small amount of experience due to working at a steel company. But things didn’t work out at that place but I was able to get 3 months of training on my lunch breaks. I was wondering if someone could throw a life line out to me. I really want to get into the industry I will say the guy that was training me said I have a natural talent with welding.

Go into a shop you’re interested in locally around 2pm during working hours and ask for the owner or manager for a job. Don’t ask around. Just do it yourself. You’ll be glad you did.
