So here's the thing that makes Castrum Fulminis hit so hard. That's not Gosetsu. He's alive and well, so it's not his ghost. That's Yotsuyu's idea of him. She envisions everything good about herself as him. The man she shot. The man that kept her alive. And that inner voice is strong enough to hold back Zenos.

A couple fun facts about the Tsukuyomi fight. 1) The bunny ears are due to Japanese Folklore. While the west has the Man in the Moon, the Japanese have the Rabbit in the Moon. 2) Her ex fight is still one of the harder ones to do, even unsynced, because she has several one shot mechanics. Also a very fun fight.

Another point is the 'feathers' of her dress/kimono. They're not feathers, they're petals of the red spider lily. She mentions it in her lines in the trial, and it symbolizes death. She views herself as a harbinger of death, in my mind.

Susano was the first fight in the game where, when I finished, went back and queued for it over and over because it was just that fun. I don't know if you guys noticed, but the Susano arena has some amazingly cool effects! During the part where Susano first erupts from the water, the rain around you freezes mid air! And when he finally swings his sword down he cracks the arena into two parts. Then once he comes back out from the water the rain continues to pour but much more violently this time. It was so awesome seeing how the terrain itself changed based on the actions of the boss.

Even when you go and visit them during the MSQ, the leader you talk to is lying down so you get to see their beds. It's just an easy thing to miss. Them on the tips of their tails is basically just them standing up straight. When they relax they have a very different pose. One thing to remember, is that this game is HUGE. A lot of the time shit that makes NO SENSE when you first encounter it will have some sort of world building backstory or reason behind it no one has explained to you yet. The snake people balancing act bugging you? I agree to a certain extent, but it is not like they just slapped floating snakes on the screen and called it a day. Doing the Tribal quests for them is good XP for alt jobs, but also a lot of world building you won't get on the MSQ beaten path. They really did put thought into the tribal culture, practices and day to day life from the perspective of someone with a snake's body.

I definitely get where Garret is coming from on Emanation. And, it sort of holds up a bit of a theory of mine. Kyle enjoyed it much more (and he was playing a dps job). A tank in Emanation is just blah. You really don't do anything. The healers have a mechanic to deal with. The dps have a mechanic to deal with. (sometimes they intertwine) ...but for Tanks it's just a generic run of the mill fight and you don't have anything that special to do. The only positioning you are doing is to stay out of the DPS mechanic. Off tank is even more boring on that one. You could eat a sandwich and not miss anything.

  • @Keldiur

The further you get, the more mechanics they add to make up for the fact you have more than one tank outside of dungeons. But like, the first trials and ARs and even some 8 man raids the other tank is there for severe screw ups. I think outside of extremes, Stormblood trials are the worst offender.

Regarding the Ananta barely touching the ground with the tip of their tails, my headcanon is that, since the tribal quest reveal their are capable of goldbending, they actually control their jewelry to float and stand higher than everyone else as instinctual intimidation method. Also, Lakshimi is a snake lady. Its just that she wear a big skirt, floats, and have a pretty human face. If you pay attention to the parts where she show off skin, you can see blue scales in her torso.

@@Boyzby because predictable gets boring. every time there's a desert, there's sitars. every time there's a forest, it's always a mellow tune with maybe some violins. every time there's a giant dragon, there's an all-male chorus with a backup symphony. you can hear like 5 songs of any of these types and have just about heard them all. he's coming off the heels of the final steps of faith; _THE_ fight with the unpredictable soundtrack. _THE_ fight that bucks the quo and says "you get a somber piece instead of action music," at least for the first third of it. compared to Dragonsong and its' placement, or even 50% of the trial music before it, sitars in a desert-snake fight is as predictable as dogs in a pound. "predictable" is bad because the devs have shown that they can do "unpredictable" well, and quite often. edit: I'm of the mindset that her music is the best in .0 stormblood anyways, at least for a casual listen. but these guys have not listened casually to the soundtracks yet, and have only barely gotten thru the patch content.

You got me to rly think about why I like Lakshmi so much still... and I realized that for me it comes down to 2 things. 1) this (with Tsukyomi and a few others) is among the most fun fights to get in roulette as healer - to watch newbies die. That moment you just casually glance down the party list, see a buff missing and gravitate towards the swiftcast button because you know what's coming for them xD And unlike a lot of the other fights where you watch newbies die it's less healers-go-god-mode and more relaxing raise-handouts which can be nice from time to time. 2) Nest (a Raid Group that has super entertaining YT videos) totally turned this fight into PvP and it's hilarious.

"Epic but Sad" - I will remember this. Tsukiyomi's fight is even better than you give it credit for. The visual of making her a bunny comes from Japanese myths. Where we in the west see a man's face on the moon, Japan sees a bunny beating a mortar and pestle, thus making rabbits associated with the moon. Tsukuyomi is the goddess of the moon, of I'm not mistaken. This is why, in Sailor Moon, the lead characters name in Japan is Usagi - which means rabbit. Also, in the music, you missed that the theme from Doma is in the Wayward Daughter portion. This has so many levels of feeling for me, because that theme was first used in Final Fantasy 6 - and there was a tragedy connected with it - but also following the ad phase, not only did Gosetsu defend her, but Heien was ready to have her as a daughter of Doma had she not regained her memories. Yes, this is top tier epic and I loved the Suzanoo fight. In the EX version, only the tanks will be able to enjoy that sword phase though.

The character design of Tsukuyomi is not random. Everything on it is based on the moon/nightbloom theme. The black/white colours represents the light/dark phasing of the moon, the shredded right side and the flowering left side of her dress are both in the shape of the nightbloom flower. The rabbit ears are also moon adjacent due to Asian cultures see the pattern on the moon face as a rabbit.

For magnetic mechanics, all you have to remember is opposites attract. Then you just decide where to repel or attract to avoid whatever damage possibilities there are (AoEs or damaging perimeter).

Soooo if y'all want to see Final Steps of Faith AND Singularity Reactor with updated graphics, look up footage of the latest Ultimate fight, Dragonsong Reprise. All ultimates are basically marathon mashups of like 4 past bosses in one giant fight, and DSR has been the best so far, from a visual, storytelling, and mechanical perspective.

*commence frantic typing* It's fascinating how different our experiences can be: Upon doing it for the first time, Enmanation was my absolute favorite trial 1) The music is a singable bop--and it fits the location perfectly, you don't want to be surprised by something coming sonically out of left field, I think, but how a soundtrack can heighten a fight. But the surprise, the interesting thing for me, we don't have a lot of other songs quite like it on the soundtrack, and that's what I LOVE about FF14--if I put a playlist of boss music on, I can get a ton of different genres, including this bollywood-adjacent number. 2) I think tanking this fight is perhaps more boring than healing it or dpsing it, so I can see why maybe Garrett didn't connect to it mechanically as much as Kyle, as a healer this was more of a dance-coordination than I was used to, so it was the beginning of challenges of the "I need to heal and also not stand in the group" variety 3) The aesthetics of the arena and aoes were very pretty--though I will concede the cave/skybox being nothing special It's a Banger for me :D

Having done both dozens of times, Nidhogg is a fight I always enjoy. Tsukiyomi is a fight I absolutely love every single time. I've gone in to do it solo at 80 countless times (retried multiple times every patch in Shadowbringers with new gear until I finally was able to solo have enough self-heal as DRK to beat it with max echo)

I have a feeling that when they do the Stormblood trial series wall, Jade Stoa might get knocked down a few pegs from their initial reaction because of how much of a momentum killer the air phase ends up being when you're farming.

Stormblood is definitely the point where I feel it gets really hard to judge trial design outside of the Extreme because the gap really widens in terms of how much of the fight you're seeing in normal mode (with a couple glaring exceptions). Susano EX has a rhythm to it that you miss out on without the full thunder mechanic and Tsukuyomi EX has one of the most fun dances in an EX. And Shinryu... well, you'll see, 😂

Something you guys may not know about Japanese Culture. Tsukyomi is the Goddess of the Moon in Japanese Culture,, hence all the moon imagery. I don't know enough Japanese to confirm this, but (Yo)Tsuyu and Tsukyomi are both words that play off each other and moon imagery (the Tsu character I believe is moon), so the fight has an even deeper meaning there. On top of all that, there is a legend in Chinese and Japanese that a giant rabbit lives on the dark side of the moon, no joke. Look at Tsukyomi's ears. They're elongated like a rabbit specifically because of that, to make reference to that. So, for all the things you appreciated about the fight, there is a lot more culturally incorporated into it if you're Japanese.
