This was how I discovered Geoff/VP, through a 2019 Bass Battle video! Having listened intently and with utter jaw dropping amazement, I thought they were all amazing. But it was the smooth, richness of Geoffs voice that captured my attention and I've been delightedly obsessed with him and VoicePlay ever since! 🙂👍

All three of these guys killed it. As one poster pointed out, the real winner was us, the audience. Now, if I had to choose one of them to 'break the ribbon with their chest just ahead of the others' - I think I'd have to go with Geoff. Two reasons for this before I secure myself from an incoming bombardment 💥 One - Geoff had the lowest pure chest note and two - it seemed he sustained those notes, generally, for longer periods of time. Come to think of it, he had the only A0, even if he only touched on it on that slide down in _Enemy_ . Great reaction, Saucey...get working on that list! 😁

Here's a Christmas song we were very surprised to hear, from Avi's Houston show just a couple of days ago, shot by an audience member. This is the first time we've heard him do a Christmas song since leaving PTX, but I think it may have been a special request by a fan, and they ended the show with it. It was a last minute thing, so the band hadn't had much time to rehearse, but considering that, they did good, and they put a different spin on it. And Avi's beautifully resonant voice shines through. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5eqxJSqf7iWn5M.html

Those 2 Avi clips early on - the first is him with a few of the staffers at A Cappella Academy in 2019 just having fun in a stairwell at the university near LA where ACA was held until this year. Just messin' around. The other was from the April 2019 Avi Kaplan Honor Choir Festival (with 200+ young singers) and they're singing "Take Me Home", a PTX original that was co-written apparently by Kirstin and Kevin.

Tim's C2 Ring of Fire bit was captured from a video I recorded at the Winnipeg, Manitoba show in 2022. It was unique, as Chance had COVID and was out of the line up (and stuck in Winnipeg) for a few shows. We got to see extra bassiness from Tim as he covered his and Chance's lines in most of the songs (they fortunately had some recordings of the Toronto show a few days earlier and Adam Rupp did his magic extracting various bits out of the Toronto recorded songs so there were occasionally multiple Tim tracks for instance... Tim singing Chance lead and Tim background, or vice versa). There are a few songs on my channel, including Ring of Fire from the Chance-less Winnipeg show). I've been to four Home Free shows, and they were all spectacular! And Rob looked so sad in this clip as he has no one to rub shoulders with as he typically does in this part of the performance!

Most of these are older songs. Heart of Life is the first one VoicePlay did after Earl left, and it’s one of my favorites. Sad, but beautiful. And no beatboxing, so you hear Layne sing throughout. I’d ask you to react to it, but judging from seeing what I’ve seen, I’ll bet VoicePlay will be low on your ‘catching up’ list.

It's fascinating to me how sound works. I'm not the best at physics, but I love to learn this stuff. There's so many weird nerfs to these low notes that the nature has made, it's insane. The wavelength reaches such absurd values that you can't really reproduce the main tone with most speakers, and even if you have a super subwoofer it's really tricky since the room's own resonance frequency comes at play, it has to be positioned in a specific place (ever wondered why church organs are that big and have specific room shapes?) and will most likely sound really muddy because the volume of air pushed is so big that it takes significant time to push around, so the overtones become sharper and sharper as the note goes lower. Finally, the human ear can technically register ~20 Hz as a sound but you actually stop hearing most notes' main tones after like 40 Hz (that's one of the reasons upright basses and 4-string bass guitars rarely go lower than E1). However, you can still hear the overtones and make your brain believe there's a really low sound somewhere down there. You can even go below E0 (~20.6 Hz) and still distinguish the sound if the instrument/speaker is good enough. That's actually how subharmonics work, you sing a note but make it connect only on every other hit so it appears half as high and way less clear than a "real" note. We can perceive bass frequencies that are way lower than this, but it's almost impossible to make any music with them. There is legit only _one_ classical music piece that requires an octobasse, but I feel like these frequencies can and should be utilised occasionally. If a singer can produce such a sound, it's so cool to hear it. Look up "Tim Foust breaks sound system" btw, he has done it multiple times and it's hilarious

The Heart if Life was made when Earl left VoicePlay and they wanted to say something about that. (Also The Bones) Just as Man in the Mirror was J.None's explanation for leaving the group. They do this a lot. Be Good was the first one they did after J/None left, to say "We're good". Other examples: Queen in 5 Minutes when Earl had a health scare; and We Will Survive, when lockdown happened.

Since The Sing Off and Pitch Perfect, acapella singing has become more prolific, and these 3 base singers are a big part of why it is now so popular. And just because Pentatonix is a 3 time Grammy winning group has helped the acapella world become more popular. So there are way more videos out there than you might think..... will take a lot of months to do them all.

Now that Avi is singing lead instead of backing harmonies all the time I notice the low notes but don't go crazy about them. It's just where he feels comfortable singing. Tim likes to sing higher in his range. Neither of them, Avi or Tim, use subharmonics, just chest voice, so Geoff is the king there. If you want to hear another bass just for fun try Elliott Michael, Homefree's old bass. "Not That Mean (A Grinch Rebuttal)"

I think it's time to take Avi out of these Bass Battles. Whereas Tim and Geoff are still continuing to be basses, Avi is not. His low bass notes are now just accents and not subharmonics to frankly get listeners to "oo and ah". He does, however play around a bit on IG and TikTok, such as his entry into the "Hoist the Colors" fray: kzread.infotj5CFmnyLSI

@@5thgentexan95 I agree. I thought Tim had coached him years ago. But he doesn't need it now, and his clear low bass notes are superior, to my ear, than subharmonics. @@charlottevan_8 No slamming here. I thought the same thing, though most often from Geoff. Yeah, it's cool that they can reach down to their toes to get those sounds, but to my ear, it sounds more of an unpleasant noise than hitting clear, clean notes. I could listen to the warm, rich tone of Avi's voice all day, but I have to take what Geoff often does in small doses. Avi should develop a deeper bass as he gets older (from what I've read on the subject), but I think he'll retain that velvety smooth, clear sound from his lowest bass notes. To me, it's all about tone and that is where Avi has is over the rest. Tim is second in that department, and Geoff is a distant 3rd. Can Geoff go lower then the others ? Heck yeah, but if it doesn't appeal to the ear, it's not something I care to listen to all the time. They're all wonderfully talented, it's simply a matter of personal preference.
