EP76: In Germany, We Don't Say... ft.

You know him from TikTok, Instagram, or KZread Shorts as the guy in the grey tracksuit, the crossbody bag, and the Birkenstocks. Liam Carpenter is originally from the UK but at the age of 18, he came to Germany to pursue a career in basketball. In today's episode, he tells us all about how he went from the basketball court to social media and which of the German stereotypes that he usually makes fun of, he's actually adopted into his own life!

I like Liams little smile at the end, cause you really see the process of, thinking, realizing something and finally getting something. It's not this intentionless smile from America, really more the German style. Looking naturally grumpy when you are relaxed, is part of it.

Watch Dinner for One to TV is actually nowadays many countries New Years tradition. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden (since 1976), Denmark (since 1980), Finland and Australia (since 1989). In 1985, the Danish television network, DR, decided not to broadcast the sketch, but received so many complaints that it returned the following year. With this single exception, Dinner for One has been shown on DR every 31 December since 1980. In Norway they watch that every Christmas (source: Wikipedia)

I appreciate Liam's work very much. I love to have this kind of mirror before me as a german. And another thing that I notice, and that I have suspected before, is that English and Germans are actually incredibly similar in their mentalities. Thank you also for this insight. But I don't end my speech without explaining that I've also been enjoying Feli's videos for years! @Feli: I disagree that only young germans would understand Liam's main character. Maybe young people should not think that stereotypical about older ones. I am getting 59 soon.

59:10 about the club mate situation in Germany. Liam could do a sketch which is based on a real story I experienced, the challenge would probably be to make it actually funny. When I first drank club mate on a trip to a friend in Berlin, I didn't really like it and told my friend it basically taste like sparkling water with a bit of sugar that someone used to put out his cigarette. My friend just said "Keine sorge, daran gewöhnt man sich, deine erste Zigarette hat dir doch auch nicht geschmeckt".

Some Germans go too all inclusive as well but more on Mallorca but also south America. But more go on indivdual trips to local hotels\hostals\camping. Backpacking is very popular with younger people but also older ones especially with european rail passes. A lot will do very individual tours (also organized ones, but which go more to local hotels). But also completely organized by themself or with a small local German tour office. They will rent a car at the destination - also camping vans are Very popular with older Germans - while younger ones love to cruise with old Bullies (VW bus). So especially for south america their are a lot of germans travelling individual or in groups which do not say in ressorts.

If you return to the Dom. Rep., you may want to see Sosúa. It's a beach town where many Jews from Germany, Austria, and other European countries came as refugees in the 1930s/40s. Although most of these people moved on after the Second World War, there's still a German/Jewish legacy there and many German speaking tourists visit.

Actually, if you have no relatives to visit, seeing other Germans somewhere else on the globe, is the last intention people have when travelling, it's more like avoiding them at any price. And there are hardly any Jews with relatives in Germany, as you may know.

The herbal and fruit tea thing is huge and pretty cheap. But most importantly is available everywhere in every super market in every city in every state. Different regions also have well-known regional ways to prepare their tea. In every kindergarden, school, hospital, restaurant you can get your meals served with different teas. Not sure if it's really the same everywhere in the us.

Sadly it is difficult finding statistics about tea consumption that include what in Germany is called "Tee", but doesn't contain the actual tea plant (fruit and herbal teas). A german article put the overall total "Tee" consumption of black, green, herbal and fruit tea at 71 liters per person and year (169 liters of coffee for comparison). But the region of "Ostfriesland" in the north consumes about 300 liters per person and year.

I mean when you speak a language the way the locals speak it, you naturally adapt many "mistakes". :) Just like I often say "anyways" instead of "anyway" or how I sometimes say "there is.." when it really should be "there are..." or how many Germans use the dative case instead of the genetive. These things are also kind of part of learning a language. - Feli

"Me either" is definitely an Americanism, it trips me up to hear it as an Englishman. But any archaic differentiation between "lay" and "lie", in so far as it once existed, I would say is pretty obsolete on both sides of the pond. I'd be interested to know where you are from and if it *really* seems ungrammatical to you? Have you ever heard Bob Dylan singing: "Lay, lady, lay. Lay across my big brass bed" and it's caused you to mentally stumble and have to reparse the sentence (presumably thinking it ought to be "Lie, lady, lie. Lie across my big brass bed."). Or is it only if you consciously thought about it and wondered what the rule told you it was 'supposed' to be that you'd decide it was a 'mistake'. I'd warrant that the lyric, or other phrases like it, would not even register to the vast majority of people in terms of a potential grammatical issue. (I even wonder in that specific case if more people would actually find "lie, lady, lie" unnatural given the potential confusion with the other verb "lie", i.e. telling falsehoods)
