I know this video is over a year old so no one will be reading this, but because of Brexit, as a Brit living in Germany, I applied for German citizenship and after a 5-minute conversation with the lady dealing with my application, I was exempt from a language test or certificate. She literally just said (in German) “Well, I think we can skip the language test.”  Now I have a German ID and am legally German. Thank you to my home country for having me. For giving me my home.

What i love about the Black Forest Family is the fact that they don't just compare things, the explain the difference. You see that Ashton has a PHD .... analyzing everything. And there is no "Why don't germans do it like we americans do?" Like a lot of ExPats present stuff

Whatever town/city you feel comfortable in. One thing one should look for also is the infrastructure of the town. The municipal.water supply the technology using at the plant. 😯

No better place on Earth to live if you love the outdoors. I live a half hour south of Freiburg, so France and Switzerland are even closer. Basel and Freiburg are both wonderful, and the trail system for hiking and mountain biking are endless. My little town has only 4000 people so it's the best for small quite town life with trails into the forest right outside my door, but Freiburg and Basel are super close for shopping and culture and museums. I can see the Swiss Jura and the French Vosges mountains from my windows and the Alps from the top of the hill behind my house.

Great episode, a real conversation. All the hassle within a house buying/ building process, your notary reading you legal German contract out loud, still understanding train station, some gut feeling that you are signing on an one-way trip to Mars. But then get lucky to wing it by your serene yourself passing obstacles like job interview, resident permit. Then get the blessing of Ashton's father, a farmer in a complete plain area, seeing the beauty in the Black Forrest landscape. It's your German dream.

I'm a big fan of both accounts feli and the guests. black forest family is living only 2 hours away and I love their videos, entertaining plus good education. as a german I love all people who want to stay here and show me reasons to love my country, too. it was the first time to listen to your podcasts. Been enjoying your podcasts. Seen Feli many times on MoreJps channel. She always brings back memories so did this video. 1996 I was 17, my father took a job with Hoechst Pharmaceutical. My brother and I did not want to leave Sydney Australia it ended up being the best experience. Moving to Frankfurt attending Frankfurt international school. The part in this video that brought back the most meaningful memory was when the Americans mentioned how their parents understood why they were living in Germany. My grandparents on both sides were Jewish German. 1 grandmother survived Auschwitz and my other grandmother was lucky to escape to Shanghai at the beginning of the war. The one that survived Auschwitz forgave Germany and visited yearly. The one who escaped always held a grudge against Germany and was a bit cranky our family was going to live there. She said she would never visit us. But after 3 years she came and visited us in Frankfurt.

My wife and i moved to our present home in Newport, RI. One factor had to do with the fact that it is a place where our adult children will enjoy when they visit and will want to return again. We both have been to Baden Wurtemburg, having to do with my employer and enjoyed the Black Forest and Elsass as well as the people here. Hopefully for you, your grown children will return to Freibourg if you are still there. You have chosen a good place that fits your lifestyle.

As a German I never really thought about the German immigration laws. Germany allowed workers in all my life and most people were happy here. Then Germany allowed to bring their spouses and that was politically accepted by most people here as well. Until Ashton mentioned worrying about caring for her mom I never really thought about this group though: Parents. Both my grandparents spent their last years with my parents and my mother was cared for by my sister that lived in the same house. Getting older myself I appreciate the fact that my sisters and my own kids are living close by a lot more than before. But back to Ashton: I faintly recall a program like "Familienzusammenführung" oder "Familiennachzug" ("Family reunification", (yeah I know you all speak/understand German!). This usually only includes spouses and children but their are possible 'Härtefälle' like parents/grandparents that no other sibling can care for. Might be useful to check into the details. As a general rule this is somewhat tricky because the government wants to be assured that the living costs of these family members are covered.

Hi Guys :) no no nooo That with the speculation law is not quite correct. If you buy an apartment or house as an investment, then you have to wait ten years so that the profit is not taxed. If you have never used it for yourself. In Bavaria. But if you buy a house or apartment and, very importantly, live in it for three calendar years, you can sell it tax-free. for example: move in officially on 01/31/2021 and sell tax-free on 01/01/2023. I live in bavaria myself and have three owner-occupied apartments as an investment, as long as I never live there myself for three calendar years, i have to wait for these ten years. I hope I could help a bit :)

So after listening to this episode, I looked up Freiburg and was surprised to see that there are two! There is a Freiburg NE of Hamburg, on the Elbe, obviously not the Black Forest! Then I found Freiburg im Breisgau which must be where BlackForestFamily is located. I was just through that area (sort of) on the train on my way to France! Great episode and nice start to 2023!

I think the official name is 'Freiburg i.Br.' (Freiburg im Breisgau). It is similar to the US, where you usually add the state to the name of the town. And where you have dozens of 'Berlin' ... Fun fact: In Germany the zip code is not part of your official address (it 'is owned' by the (privatized) postal service), therefore all the town names in the country have to be different.

First time I‘ve seen this channel; I‘ve seen a number of Felicia‘s videos. I watch all of the BFF videos. This was quite enjoyable.

When my sister in law Kathy was a French major at the University of Kansas she spent a semester at the Sorbonne. During her stay in Paris Kathy went into a pharmacy to buy tissues and spoke in French to the manager. He got angry w/ her because of her pronunciation. I would have thought he would be pleased that an American was making the effort...

There is no point understanding the french and how buttoned up they are about their language... On one hand they wont speak you in any other language even if they could, on the other hand they are easily offended if someone dares to speak it not well enough^^

I would not like the thought of my kid in a Kinderhort prior to the first birthday. But my son actually was at a daymom from 2 months on - the first half year only half days with me having him but working in my mom's company in the afternoon. After half a year I started to work fulltime at my old company again but came home for lunch. My son was at my daymom in the mornings and (mostly sleeping) in the afternoon with my Grandma or my mom on her free afternoons. I was totally lucky with my daymom - she is a learned "Kindererzieherin" but did not work then because of her own kids who were 8 and 9. My son was her first and only daykid and she is friends to my family. She actually paid a visit to us and was bringing a present for the baby and after seeing him she asked me what plan I had and offered her services. My son was there like the third child - when I brought him a quarter before 8 the kids just left and my son often made a second nap on my daydad's stomach when he was home because of his shifts. They had time to walk him through town etc. with the kinderwagen every day to get fresh air etc. When the kids came home from school earlier he was the main attraction, too. And he somehow got some "normal" family life that I could not offer him.

I've done the underground walking tour in OTR and highly recommend it! Very interesting.

I did enjoyed the live stream..... For shure I'd love to see more live ones..

Where I live in the US, if I'm hot inside, I'm also hot outside. My house is well insulated, so typically opening a window means letting heat in, not a way to cool it down.

@@Neelia35 I know. In spring and fall I can open my windows at night and close them in the day. For all of summer, it is not any cooler at night.

I used to work for Hagebaumarkt (Hardware Store) and we took the ceiling fans down because over 10 years we hab them we sold 2-4 fans

You don't open the windows in Houston or Florida during the summer....

We do not have airconditioning in schools in Germany, but we have "Hitzefrei". If the temperature rises above 26ish °C the schools would close and the kids are sent back home. An offices also have to close, if the temperature rises over an specific height.

Cannot rule out that it exists again, but here in BW the legal base for that was abolished in the 00s. And here it was only days with 30+ degrees at ten am.

Ich glaube, dass es wahrscheinlich von Ort zu Ort Unterschiede gibt. Krippe ist in unserer Region der Begriff für eine Einrichtung, die sehr, sehr junge Babys aufnimmt. Kita (manchmal Mini-Kindergarten) ist für 1-3 und dann Kindergarten ist 3-6.

"After the baby was born, Jonathan was only allowed to visit for a maximum of two hours per week" I don't understand this. Once he's there, the risk of infection has already been established. Staying longer, as long as he isn't wandering around, doesn't increase the risks.

The whole thing is botched. If he and Ashton are togethr each day they would carry exactly the same virusses. Only when Jonathan goes to work or about the city he exposes himself to additional virusses. Limiting the visits to 2 hours was ridiculous.

Re buying a house in the USA without being a resident. Yes, you can do it, but the house does NOT entitle you to live there permanently. Further, beware of property taxes (and increases) as a non-resident. You might encounter some "totally unexpected" surprises. Once you are a US resident, the situation changes and you can go for your homestead exemption, which is a significant factor for appraising the value of your property. On the other hand, there are quite some issues with the new assessment and calculation of the Grundsteuer (property tax). Further, another big factor is property insurance (depends on your location in the USA - flood insurance, wind / hurricane insurance etc.)

I lived in Dayton for 10 years, and the thing I noticed was that instead of "excuse me" people say "Please?" - which is the English for "bitte?" if I'm informed correctly. My mom's family is German, but I'm fourth generation so the language has been lost for me. Family lore is that a relative was the brewmeister of Munich at one point.

I thought it was very interesting. Keep up the good work. Feli may not remember this, but my only real culture shock was when I was in Germany at 11 years old. There was a woman in the men's restroom. Something you never see in America. My dad said she was there to keep it clean. And she wanted money when we were leaving-possibly her only means of support. Here, that would be a good way to get arrested.

Up until this year any stranger could buy a house in Canada. Now there is a moratorium on that because there is a accès to affordable housing crisis. A lot of immigrants are complaining but as I see it we're not the first to implement such a policy.

I think that it's such a shame that due to 2 World Wars, german descents were mistreated and the language banned in schools. And also places that they hung out in and drink their were closed.

Actually my university does have climate control. Though the building i am in is quite modern. The first part was built 1995 and the other one 2009.

@@Trifler500 The first thing you buy as a homeowner is a hammer drill. That goes through concrete like butter. Even tenants may have an electric drill. But that is most likely the whimpy "ratatat" style vibrator only.

josh espacially, omi is so in love with you how good your german is. her grand grand childs live around the world. i did as well. i care for her. every day she says feli and josh, perfect couple, i say, no, feli has her boyfriend, josh we don't know. again, feli and josh, my omi loves watching you every single day. thank you, in the name of her. josh, omi loves you so much, i should hug you. i said omi, when i am in munich, just an hour away, i maybe give him your deep hug. josh thank you, because i don't know how long i have her.

How many do you think actually get kidnapped in the US. Here is a hint...real kidnapping (a stranger abducting a person under 18 ) amounts to about 340 per year on average. Out of a population of 330.000.000. I wouldn't call that many...🤷‍♂️

@@samfetter2968 I guess it's fair to only count strangers in this situation. I hadn't considered that. We have Amber alerts all the time, but that's kidnappings in general. When I lived in Tanzania many years ago, kidnapping was a genuine constant threat.

There aren’t lots of kidnappings. It’s been a cultural change in parenting over the last 40 years or so. I’m 61 and 6 year olds walked to school alone when I was a kid.

Do you guys not get time off for sick children? I think here in Austria it is one week per parent, but it can be extended to two weeks a year. Fully paid obviously.

Niederlande als Land, ist bekannt in Europa, als Fahrrad-Nation. Aber ich bin sicher, Du würdest dich als Niederländer im sonnigen Freiburg - inmitten des Schwarzwalds - im Süden Deutschlands sehr wohl fühlen. Ich habe sechs Jahre in der Nähe dort gelebt. @@UnderstandingTrainStation I'm sorry, but it is painful to listen to Ashton and (at a lesser extent) Feli in this video, and although I was interested, I had to stop watching after approx 30 minutes. Not being able to formulate _one_ sentence without the use of "like" is cringeworthy.

"Dank u" is Dutch, so maybe Jack is just skipping over the other 2 languages.

But that "U" is pronounced like the German "Ü".
