Ep7. Build a Pond Filter With Spillway

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today, we are going to turn a plastic Planter Box into a DIY Pond Filter with a spillway that you can easily make for any at home or indoor/outdoor pond. After completing outdoor decking, it was time to start building this diy pond filter with water fall so I could cycle the backyard pond and add some fish in coming weeks. This project took me couple of days to complete and I waited a week for everything to cure completely. Pond filter is powered by a 10,000 LPH pond pump and contains roughly around 24 L of bio media. Majority of the media is highly porous Seachem Pond Matrix. I also added Seachem Stability, bio balls and some other live bacteria to kick start the cycle.
Filter box is a 80cm planter trough with a pvc spray bar pipe. I have selected male and female adapters for both inlet and outlet connection of this over head filter. To hide the filter, I made a wooden planter box made of treated pine decking board. Timber was double coated to protect against moisture and help extend the life.
Pond water was crystal clear with in a week of installing this pond filter. However, this is still not a true test of the filter capacity as pond is under stock. With the help of bacteria booster balls and secheam pond stability, I am confident that pond filter will uphold my expectation.
Thank You

    Great set up, however you could take it to the next level by adding some pea gravel to the top of your biofilter and planting out. You could even grow lettuce, celery, herbs, impatiens, papyrus grass, water iris etc.

    Hello. First of all what a great video you have. Can I ask what did you use as a filter spillway and did you paint it with pond paint (black) or did you apply pond liner on it? Lastly, how did you seal the spillway to the plant box please? Thank you for your lovely video. Hoping to hear from you.

    Hi Ren, I have used a storage container for the spillway and used Krylon fusion spray paint in black colour. I have used ideal seal ms290 for sealing the spillway to the plastic planter box. Sealant was leftover from affixing glass to the epdm pond liner. Almost 1 year has passed with no leaks.

    Hi Cole, I have had this filter for year and a half. I am making a bog filter now. Similar look, however water flows from bottom and travel up before going back to the pond. This filter design required biweekly sponge cleaning with increase in pond fish. Bog filter will be more efficient and requires less maintenance. Just my feedback mate

    @@Fishaholic gotcha. Like I said my planter will be at waist level, pond is in ground, so I'm think I'm gonna try to fit some sort of indented top/lid to act as a container and add soil and plants on top to look like a legit planter box. Then I gotta figure out how to drain said plants so soil doesn't overflow into pond with rain🤔 so much planning lol. Bought a house last year with existing pond, waterfall leaks all over the place and after a year of patching I've torn down the waterfall and now rebuilding on opposite end of small pond

    Hi Abe, I don't remember exactly. It should be in one of the pond video descriptions. However, it's roughly 87 inches in length, 47 inches I width, and 47 inches in height. Overall, it's not a massive pond due to space constraints in my backyard.

  • @Fishaholic

    @Fishaholic

    That method works well if it is a bog filter and you follow the steps of adding rocks and pebbles. Have a drain hole so filter can be clean by rinsing with pond water as sediment will be trapped at the bottom of filter. I hope it make sense

    bog filters work well if you want to place plants on the top. the plants get to enjoy the nutrients in the sediment.

    I have pothos peace lily monstera three different kinds. And a few other plants I think it’s great I want a completely new dimension to the aquarium and is also extremely beneficial especially when using it as I do in a overhead sump bog filter set up. I have a canister filter feeding it with an overflow back into the tank which means no detritus builds up in there because it’s prefiltered and I use expanded clay pebbles which act as a very efficient biological media and the plants love to grow in it. Apart from cleaning the canister filter which I would have to do anyway there’s no added maintenance it just looks great and serves the purpose also improves the air quality in the house so it’s a win-win all round
