Watching you work on the 202 took me back nearly 50 years. I have basic mechanic skills and I was able to work on those motors. I could climb inside and beside the motors. They were thirsty otgerwise big reliable comfy cars. Great country cars, that handled rough tracks gravel and fire breaks. I had 2 HQs....a sedan and a flat top ute with a 173 motor. My dog used to snap at low branches and fall off the back driving in the bush. Currently have an Adventra, for 13 years. Went to fix the thermostat and it wasn't by the water pump but barely accessible at the back of the motor. 5 minute job on a 202.

I wish I had the time and money to restore the exterior and interior to completely original condition like the day it was sold new with steel wheels and hubcaps. Then install a late model warm V8, six speed manual transmission, upgrade the brakes and suspension to be somewhat near competitive with a later model SS Commodore. What a sleeper.

Tip for tip. My old boy was a Mechanic, and he told me never to give this axle tip away. That soldering iron tip, That's pure gold. Tip 1, PCV on any Holden if it sticks to your finger and won't let go while running, it will idle properly then. $12 from memory. Tip 2, an axle that doesn't want to come out. Big block chain under a tight wheel nut, and a couple of man tugs.... DISCLAIMER !!!!!!!! Leave backing plate bolts on at the end of their threads boys, and don't use 2 chains shackled together with a pad lock. What state do you live in Mick ? Keep up the Great work. 1 last tip. XW & XY longitudinal steering arms are different. Bought an expensive XW part from wreckers to replace a bent XY part. Wreckers wouldn't take it back. But it wasn't my car so I didn't take the hair cut. Shed Skid... who said that. = ]

Ahhh memories ! My 1st car was a 73 model, ex RSL cab. Did my apprenticeship on taxis in Sydney. HQ thru to HZ, XY thru to XD, VH thru to VK Valiants. Loved my HQ. I had the run of the workshop & the spare parts dept. All our Holden parts were thru Stacks of Rushcutters Bay. Now gone, but were a big deal from the 1940's onward. A lot of older Holdens from the 50's & 60's used to have an additional chrome badge on the rear...Stack for Holden. All gone now 🙁

Great to see this. Love seeing old cars brought to life. Just a tip for future video productions. Try and keep the audio levels constant throughout the mix. The music on this was way up compared to your narrating volume. It makes for a far more enjoyable watching experience when viewers are not having to constantly adjust the audio levels. All the very best for the future.😀

Although I think the Valiants and Falcons of the time were much better looking cars, I can see why the Holdens were so popular. I think they had more of a conservative and timeless design. I read somewhere they were designed to look smaller than they were, and it works, while the Valiants and Falcons look huge. Then, of course, there's the P76, but that's another story. Good to see these old cars are still out there in people's sheds and you're doing your bit to preserve them for future generations.

Nice one! Brings back memories. The white HQ is late 1971 or 1972. Mucus is 1973 onwards. The front indicators were changed from clear to amber to comply with the change in the lighting laws in 1973. Mucus might also have a dual miles and km speedo, or kilometres only, if it's a '74. That Air Chief radio in the white HQ, may be a replacement. The early HQ factory original radio had a flat fascia, with 4 thumbwheels for the on/off, volume, tune and tone. The radio was changed for the more common 2 shaft controls-style radio during the HQ's production run. There was an AM radio / cassette player available as an option. If you are removing the black stripes off the bonnet of Mucus, there is also the blacked out window surrounds on the doors, which should be body colour on a Kingswood.
@backshed5295

Unfortunately mate I don’t know that’s not something I’ve ever tried to replace mate. Maybe a Hq car club might be a starting point , someone that has done a concourse type restoration. 🍺🍺👍
Looks great. Did you start the 600 on orbital dry sanding and finish with wet 600 by hand? Also what brand are those rippa mags?

P600 on the heavily stained sections then hand sand with p800 over the rest. The wheels are a cheap copy of a 90’s Dragway classic wheel. The centre cap says Australian Racing !! Hahaha but I can guess where they were actually made as they were pretty well priced. 🍺👍 Message me through Fb Backshed or Instagram backshedmick for details where to get them if you like?
After you put the clear on wouldn't it keep rusting underneath? How do you stop the rusting process?

Nah mate it’s sealed so moisture can’t get to it , But ! If the bad surface rust does deteriorate that’s where you need to use the Boiled linseed or penatrol . Take a look at the patina video I put up and that will explain what I’m saying. Cheers for the comments

Mate I didn’t know that. Thanks Mucus videos will be coming shortly.
btw, good work with the white hq. I'm assuming its a 72 model, given the clear blinker lights, MPH speedo and headrests on the front bench seat.

@@andrew111379 none of the 71 models had front seat headrests, that was 72 onwards. MPH speedo still kicking around in 72.
