Ep01: Going Solar with UPS Solar | Custom cooling!

Ғылым және технология

Well, we finally decided after nearly 2 years of researching, quotes, and more researching, to take the plunge and add a Solar PV battery system to our house. But wait, there's more! We also plan to add a Solar Diverter so we can electrically heat our hot water instead of gas.
This was all fine except it all needed to go into the workshop, instead of the usual loft space (don't ask). If it was going in there it needed to be in an enclosure to protect the electrical system and the batteries from the welding and grinding. So it needed to be in an enclosure. We checked with the installers and they said that was fine so long as there was plenty of forced air cooling. So here we are making a custom enclosure with digital temperature controlled cooling system.

Spec of the system we hope to install (contract signed, pending installation):
18 panels - 12 panels on the West roof, 6 panels on the East roof
Batteries - 3 x 2600 mAh lithium cells in a modular 19" rack format (Fox ESS)
5 kW hybrid inverter from Fox ESS
Emergency Power System to allow us to run off-line
-- Hope to generate 5600 kWh / year (currently use 4800 kWh per year) --

I think you still need to submit a G98 form to the DNO even for systems under 3.68kW, (unless you're totally off-grid) within 28 days of commissioning

Ok yes you might be right there. I think I was told that is a quick process whereas over that level G99 (?) takes up to 3 months which is where we ended up

Just to note on your comment on feeding back to the grid being worthless, Octopus offer 15p/kWH which would make it more cost effective to heat your water with gas rather than the immersion heater.

OK thanks interesting to know. It was a lot lower than that when we spec’d this and signed up in early January. I think more like 5p / kWh ? We are going to settle on the best tariff when it all goes in so thanks for that. I think the Eddie was around £450 and is now part of the package we signed for so not much in the scheme of the project. Thanks

@@routercnc9517 I think you have to have octopus as your incoming electricity supplier as well outgoing to get that rate. And although it doesn't look like you can switch (given everyone is just paying the government rate currently) we phoned them up and they let us switch.

I assumed we would need the solar PV installed before getting a solar related tariff? Have you been through this process?

@@routercnc9517 you can switch to the standard octopus tariff whenever, and add the outgoing tariff on top when you've got the documents from your installers. It's a separate bolt on they do, as you can take outgoing tariffs from any supplier. You will need a smart meter for any outgoing tariff. Octopus also do a tariff that is cheap at night and more expensive during the day, so I'm looking at triggering my inverter to charge overnight if the next day's forecast isn't great.

OK thanks that is all great info. We need to start looking into all that now rather than wait.

Did you consider putting filter pads behind the lower vents?

I thought about it but the grills do have a small mesh, and I wanted max airflow to make sure it did not overheat. I have an air compressor so can blast it up next to the inverter fins once a year if they get dusty. Thanks
