EP01 - Character Building - Sambar Backpack Hunt by Bow

Спорт

EP01 from a recent backpack hunt into the Victorian Alps for Sambar with Dirk Branford. And this time I chance my hand at using strings and sharp sticks.
This is part of a 4 part series:
Day 1 - • EP01 - Character Build...
Day 2 - • EP02 - Under Pressure ...
Day 3 - • EP03 - First Blood - S...
Day 4 - coming soon (please subscribe)
Please share these films with your friends, family or other hunters and encourage them to support the channel. A lot of effort goes into capturing these hunts, producing them and sharing for anyone to enjoy, in my limited spare time.
I hope you enjoy

Hey bro good to see you back out there, always great to see your vids. Taking a bow into the high country after Sambar is another thing in itself, it not only means that you are taking on the ultimate challenge, but it means that you have come to the time in your life where it is really the hunt that you get off on and not so much need to kill something as you are now prepared to accept that you may need to walk away from a big stag that you cannot get to where you could otherwise shoot with a gun. I see that you found out that bow hunting is a game of patience, it is so hard to hold back and wait for the right time to not rush the shot as I have also done in the past. The adrenaline is awesome, and to capture it on camera is even better. You done seriously well to get so close to that stag, I really hope you get one on this trip. Makes me want to get out there! (but I'd call for a chopper on the way out :)

Thanks SSH, you pretty well summed up some of the things that were going through my head leading up to the trip (low probability, but high reward). Without wanting to compare one style of hunting over another, I personally felt like I had alot less options with the bow and therefore I was more invested in the hunt. Having to close the distance on an animal unawares is really intense and while I've shot plenty of deer within 30 or 40m with the rifle, doing it with the bow really elevated or heightened the senses. I can certainly see the appeal of bow hunting, and as you say it's more about the challenge than the outcome. Cheers for watching 👍🍻

Cheers Steve, Dirk did bloody well for his second backpack hunt in mountainous country, and this was certainly a step up in effort from our May 2018 back pack trip! 50 years is just a number though and he did exceptionally well on that helluva climb out!

Love it Jamie, I really appreciate you taking the time out to make these videos. I understand how it is tempting not to film and just savour the moment for yourself while you are there. Also great to see sambar hunters going out there and doing it hard not because you have to but for the love of adventure!

Spot on George, I always feel like my soul is recharged after hunting in the mountains. Even if it involves carrying a 30kg pack, sweating like a pig, breaking our way through dog$h!t thickets, cursing the descent or the climb, Heart brake from missing or spooking deer, frozen boots, wet feet.... to those that have not endured such places it would be easy to mistake it for being a stressful place. But that's the adventure of it and it is most certainly a special place! Cheers for watching

Cheers Joel, yeah she's thick alright, and that's a common thing over here for bush to tighten right back up 10years on from bush fires in the area. Was watching one of your ruahine clips the other day and was thinking far out I wish they had bush like that in Aus lol! Bush aside, the topography in Victoria has some similarities to the ruahines , just not quite as steep at the ridge tops . Cheers for watching bro

And despite his body perhaps not always responding to the mind with overcoming all of the challenging terrain; his mental toughness just carried him through all the obstacles. And not once did he complain 💪yeah the drool was early on and I was pretty sapped too. Did my best to show the steepness of the terrain but the camera always fails to do it justice 🤣 cheers for watching 👍
