I watched a video with Tom doing a blindfold comparison of different overdrives including the original Nobles and newer versions. He was able to pick out the original Nobles by ear alone each time. The lesson: the best musicians CAN hear a difference with tone that most of us can't.

Impressive indeed. It's also a question of how each pedal responds and in turn how it feels when you play through it.

Billy Squier is a legend. Probably the most all around rocker of his time. Songs, playing, singing, and a great live performer. Nowadays he plays with Ringo or spends time in Central Park caring for a plot of the gardens.

Thanks for the great conversation Marc, Dave, and Tom! Always something in every episode. Tom’s description of Nashville players and attitude is spot on. It reminded me of a big recording session I assisted on, in Quebec ‘98. A bus load of gear and Nashville players were brought in for two weeks. To say these guys were serious, is an understatement. On Sunday though, everyone was glued to the TV watching NFL 😅 Have a great weekend guys :) I’ve got my brother here, and his brand new BE OD Deluxe to mess with, this Victoria Day weekend 🔥

Thank God for your moodiness, Tom. I have mountains of voice memos of songs I tell myself “I should be working on.” But there are weeks when I’m just going to work and doing my thing-then I jam and it works unprompted. Don’t ever feel you need to do music out of obligation: it’s better when you’re living your life and it comes along the way.

Thanks for an amazing discussion gentlemen! Awesome. The one piece of gear I bought and kick myself I sold: a 1 of 100 PRS S2 Mira all korina. Definitely dumb and beyond stupid; but necessary given the economy and situation at the time! It put all Gibson SGs and most Les Pauls to shame! Honorable mention: a circa 2001-2002 Gibson Les Paul Smartwood Elite (the thin one, with replaced Dirty Fingers pickups!). It was also a monster. Felt like an SG thick body without the weight of a typical Les Paul.

Nashville was (and still is) a center for book publishing and distribution (including sheet music) before recorded music became ubiquitous- so it was only natural to start manufacturing and distributing records using that existing structure, and then an obvious move to start recording them there as well.

if someone doesnt believe tone comes mostly from the hands then think of it this way.. you ever work real hard and your hands get calloused and strong grip, and you play with your thumb and it sounds a lot different than normal? because it plays different, the skin contact is different. we all have different hands. different touches, different everything. period.
