Episode 98, October 21, 2014. Former KISS Business Manager Chris Lendt returns! Chris discuss KISS during the 1980s. Topics include: Replacing Vinnie Vincent with Mark St. John and then Mark with Bruce Kulick. He gets into the contracts Peter Criss and Ace Frehley each had with KISS after their departures from the band. Chris even talks about Jesse Hilsen, Paul Stanley's former Therapist and KISS' former manager. The three of us also spend some time discussing the average attendance per show for each KISS tour and some of the interesting findings. Lots of minutia in this show! We end the show looking at the new Kiss: Alive: The Millennium Concert vinyl album and a look back at the advance radio 12 inch vinyl release of the single Lick It Up.

I met Peter at a car dealership at a meet and greet after he left KISS. He was autographing glossies of the Out of Control album cover, but no one there had bought it. Everyone was there to meet him without his makeup, I gave him a photo of my KISS tribute band and he thought it was a KISS photo, and signed it and gave it back.

I was working with Brian Wilson for a studio session (I want to be very respectful about this), and he had a therapist on call 24/7 (common knowledge). Sessions would start and stop quite a bit. So when it comes to Paul Stanley supposedly calling a therapist a lot, or maybe not a lot, I think it's totally 100% cool to have that outlet. It's a personal choice that has to be respected. But as with Kiss, there are several stories of therapists turned manager. It's very tricky business. Interesting to hear Chris talk about it. Thanks guys.

I worked as a photo editor on a KISS project in 2008. At the time, I was head of licensing and photo editing at a large photo agency in Hollywood. Long story short, a guy with the initials KS, took our hi-res images, used them and never paid the license. I worked on/with at least a hundred bands and never got screwed. Only with KS.The reason I care? I never got my commision or credit due. And Im a Huge KISS fan/nerd from way back. Its a shame. You guys are doing a GREAT JOB! Love the show! Cheers!

Regarding attendance averages; On page 134 of Lendt's book the idea of doing what they had done before, playing smaller gigs to fill in dates and hit everywhere they could, was shot down. They were not going with a B show. The Love Gun show by comparison was a "B show". I am not that surprised that the Destroyer tour averaged higher than Love Gun. In '76 the played Anaheim Stadium to 43,000 vs whatever the total amount of 3 LA Forum shows had. An interesting stat that I doubt could be known now is how did all tours compare to the reunion tour in terms of how long it took to sell tickets. I remember being 15th in line when the MSG shows went on sale. By the time it was my turn the first show was sold out and the best seats for the 2nd show were upper levels. Thankfully I began dating a chick that worked at Polygram and got seats for 2 other shows. Best ex ever. Lendt's book is great. Thanks for getting him on again.

It seems that some KISS fans have a difficult time grasping just what cultural has-beens the band was from Unmasked until probably Animalize (the first album release I noticed that any kids at my high school cared about, even if they were just a few kids wearing dirty denim jackets). No one loved KISS, and no one hated KISS. It was really complete and utter indifference to the fact that they still existed at all. When hair metal exploded, that's all that saved them from the dustbin, I think.

For Gene to blame a decrease in ticket sales on 'oil and the arabs' in 'Grooves' magazine is incorrect on a number of levels. It wasn't the Arab nations who were behind the huge increase in the price of oil but Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the Imperial Nation of Iran. Pahlavi was ethnically Persian and he add the agreement of Nixon and Kissinger. Gene's beliefs seem to hint at a little prejudice towards Arabs peoples which he hasn't exactly hidden in some interviews. You can read the book 'The Oil Kings' by Andrew Scott Cooper if you want to know about the oil politics of the mid to late '70s. It's both entertaining and very informative. It isn't guided by personal opinion either....

Mike B, Mark and Tommy. Regarding the earnings the band made in the seventies (around 39:00) the songwriters make money by playing their material live through Ascap. (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers is a performing rights organization which licenses and collects royalties for performance). A huge deal of the money made is through this. Even though Simmons and Stanley wrote most of the stuff, I think they divided that post equally.

Listening Mark bring up Hurricane (I know this has nothing to do with KISS or the show but bear with me) makes me remember a story about them. After my parents got divorced, she managed a restaurant, and during a phone call she said she met these guys that came in. She had told me something like "they look like those long haired rocker guys you listen too. But I can't remember their name" About 6 months ago, I'm doing some housecleaning for her and found a Polaroid of her and Hurricane and a signed company letterhead. I just kept thinking "My mother. Isn't it funny that pro athletes salary contracts are very much publicized but, when a fan asked Bruce Kulick about his salary in 1995, he just said, it's none of your business. We later found out Ace and Peter were getting $50,000 a show for the reunion tour then of course we all found our Peter was getting $10,000 less per night than Ace on the farewell tour according to him. I would think Eric and Bruce were very well compensated as time went on for their work ethic and loyalty. Bill Aucoin had an entire floor of a high rise in Manhattan. That was an expensive deal. Throwing extravagant parties and charging them to the band, a thing pretty common in those days. Van Halen were furious when Warner Brothers and managers did that.

Hey 3 Sides, if a rookie comes up in September and has 85 At Bats and gets 45 hits he does indeed have a .529 average...he doesn't win the batting title though because he didn't have a commensurate amount of at bats to the rest of the league...this argument is like that to a point, you said the discrepancy between the 40th anniversary tour and the reunion tour was 103 v 192...the fact that they got 89 more dates indicates 'more popularity' in some way. I think that's what you're sorta driving at here. Again though, if on the 40th tour they were playing bigger venues they may have played to a similar amount of fans with less shows. Taking mean averages here isn't exactly fair in the statistical sense. I enjoy your show a lot.

to be fair, even by 89 the alternative revolution was starting to murmur and the 70s generation in those bands were starting to acknowledge Kiss as an influence, fully coming to fruition with the Grunge guys. In 86, they were just not cool. Same thing happened with Iron Maiden. 1995 they were playing CLUBS and by 1999 they were reuniting with Bruce and Adrian because the climate had changed by then

Great episode! I love , love , love the guest episodes. Chris Lendt is a wealth of information but he always sound a little bored and sleepy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------Gene has spent decades misinterpreting KISS wealth and drawing power. He has been doing it to great effect in the press as far back as the 1970s. Gene was spouting off about KISS being as popular as The Stones during the Dynasty tour. I think that is why so many confused fans spam up your Facebook page with crazy nonfactual comments. Some fans really believe all the hype about KISS' amazing drawing power from back in the day. In the 1970s Zeppelin sold more than seventy thousand seats to the Silverdome in a matter of hours. KISS never did singular shows like that in America , not during the 70s , not during the reunion tour , not now. They were never in that league. Gene and Paul should be paying you guys extra for all the drama .It's all their fault Kisstards are blasting you with mental comments. They must really believe the Love Gun tour was the biggest of the big. KISS are gonna show us how the big boys do it........

I really dig having Mark's musician perspective on the show now. Great job, Mark! Another great interview with Chris. Excellent. This show made me think about something: I wish somehow we could do the math and add up all the net income Peter and Ace earned with Kiss. Then we could look at the percentage they have left as an example of what not to do financially as a musician. Young musicians need to know about this stuff. I suspect neither Ace or Peter would have no interest in Kiss or badmouthing them if they had invested their money wisely. Just sayin...

It kills me how folks put KISS down that that they were/are has-beens and should just give it up. I've been a fan since I walked by our local record store in our little downtown and saw KISS Alive in the window and picked it up strictly because I thought it looked cool. Granted it was 1975 and I was 12 years old but what a day that was, they were my first concert in 1977 on the KISS Alive II tour (saw Rush Hemiphere's just a few months later) and was just blown away. I was a die-hard fan until about '81 but that was reborn when they dropped the makeup in '83 and thought they adapted well in the 80's and 90's. I've seen them numerous times in the 70's, 80's, 90's and into the 2000's and they've always put on a great show. I never worry about those that don't get them or put them down, I don't define what I listen to by what others like and it was actually a badge of honor walking around with my KISS Army patch on in school before they really broke big. I'll always be a die-hard fan and love your show guys. My brother and I are heading out to the KISS convention in May in Indianapolis and my brother is also buying a Vault from Gene in a few weeks in Chicago, maybe we'll run into you guys!! Rock on and keep the show going!!

Great episode Michael, Mark & Tommy. Your civility & humor is 1st class. Your comments regarding KISS fans, especially those exclusively of the original 4 & no other version of KISS, appears to me to be quite accurate unfortunately. Some people would argue about the time of day or anything else according to their opinion (& because it's their opinion is truth). I'm so glad that 3 Sides Of The Coin reveals not just your opinions but give us figures & facts rather than conceited nonsense that far too many people dish up. Some people ought to go & pull out a dictionary & understand what the correct meaning of the words that pour out of their mouths & not some digital opinion or meaningless 'truth' they pull out their used tissue. Great stuff 3 Sides Of The Coin. Absolutely enjoyable KISS discussions. Keep up the solid work. Luv it.

I like all eras.I believe the only reason the numbers were not high on the 10th Anniversary tour is probably because a good amount of the old school fans didn't like the new era of the band and KISS was not really drawing in too many new fans of the band back then.It was there first tour of the US in 4 years.KISS had lost some of there fans being away so long and not touring here and releasing to what most KISS fans thought were not great albums at the time.I believe the fans that showed up for the Creatures tour were some hardcore fans and some hardcore fans like me,who never got to see the band in the 70's(for whatever reason) and was finally getting to see the band live finally.

Rockforevermusic I would agree with that assessment. But many fans did not know Ace had left

Tom Sommers if they were not paying attention, yea they would not of known, but I knew Ace was not in the band and I am just your average rocker who tried to keep up by reading Rock mags back then.It was the only way to find out about Rock News back then.

i went to the creatures tour and almost didn't because i did not like unmasked or the elder and did not know creatures kicked ass til i bought it the day after the concert, just like seeing and hearing priest for the first time on the dynasty tour and was in awe of them and have been one of my favorite bands since i was blown away and just mesmerized by wendy o williams,i was the same way with the revenge album, since i hated crazy nights and hot in the shade i did not buy revenge until after the concert, i did know ace was not with them any more

the alive 35 tour they played in the arenas and this past tour they are playing the outside amphitheaters so smaller venues with def leppers, let alone the tours 10 years ago with aerosmith i did not stay for aerosmtih and did not go in until poison was over and did not go in until def lepard was over and i am sure it was the same in a lot of the cities, the asylum tour they came here twice, the first time with black and blue and the stage was in the middle and then they came back to a smaller venue later in the year with wasp and it was pretty much full, they have not had a good opening band since animalize with queensryche, now look at all the people complaining about tommy for the last 10 years and how ace and peter should still be getting paid more money and aces new album being the best selling album of any kiss member outside of kiss but ace is playing holes in the wall in the new york area and texas and the texas tickets are half the price as the new york shows so if all these ace fan idiots were supporting him like they should be he would be playing halls as big as kiss is

pit commander666 I never saw KISS with WASP but I have seen WASP many times and my band opened for them too. I have an incredible WASP story that I hope to share on the show one day. Blackie did an incredible thing for me...and it's a story I think ALL fans of rock and roll will dig-(Mark)

Originals only fans are obnoxious. They'd rather Kiss had died in a plane crash after Peter was fired than acknowledge anything after Ace left, but they still hang on to the records Peter's face was on, but didn't even play on.

No offense to anyone, but I've always felt this would work better with just Michael. He has a nice, engaging voice and personality. This would be better if he was the only host.

Why are there so many ignorant people who watch your show who have stupid theories, can't accept facts and just hate your show to hate. I wish you guys wouldn't pay so much attention to them. There are plenty who enjoy your show but you only give the "haters" attention.

We talk about ALL KISS fans not just haters. But, we will always call them out for their lies, that is the only way you can stop. Ignoring them won't make them go away.
