Ep 97 | Come with us to the City of Poitiers | Rich History | French Farmhouse Life |
Join us as we stroll the streets of the medieval city of Poitiers. We even discover the origins of the Statue of Liberty!
The Poitiers Statue of Liberty is a miniature of the one offered to New York. It was built in 1903 in memory of Jean-Baptiste Breton, who was guillotined for plotting against Louis XVIII.
As his last words were, 'Long live liberty' ´Vive la liberte', the square was renamed Place de la Liberte.
How can you help us grow our channel?
www.buymeacoffee.com/Wonderfu...
We have the loveliest supporters and followers of our KZread channel 'It's a Wonderful Life'.
We remain committed to provide our content regularly, and of late, to increase the frequency of our vlogs. We have and continue to receive, many kind requests, to send gifts, or in some way help us financially with our channel.
We have given this a great deal of thought. Whilst 'Patreon' and 'go fund me' are out of the question for us, we feel the 'buy me a coffee platform' (or for us, a cup of tea!) would be a great way to do this, especially in light of its ease of use and non ongoing commitment.
Any contribution towards maintaining and hopefully enhancing our channel is very much appreciated, but never expected.
Thank you again for all your support and kind comments, and perhaps even a 'nice cup of tea' Anna and Peter

You two are so generous to take us along. I'm very grateful.
Lovely outing. Love how you bring our eye to odd things and share a story to enlighten us to take notice. You do great history tidbits, too. I'm glad you both enjoyed your rock n roll dancing.
Thank you! I did enjoy it very much. That organ in the church was really something!
Thank you so much for taking us along on this fantastic journey. What an amazing town with those incredible timber frame homes. Really enjoy these videos.
Fascinating tour. It would be lovely to see inside one of those very old houses. I agree, the island house and water sounds are beautiful. Thank you 🦘🦘🦘
I love Poitiers and went there several times as a child. Memories of gargantuan and wonderful restaurant meals and the only time I ever saw my dad drunk!
Fun town - that organ!!!
I can begin to tell you how much I love your tours of these towns. You and Anna are troopers to film no matter the weather!
Excellent video and also "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" what a treat - always reminds me of Captain Nemo when I was a kid
Wow you got to that church in time for the Organ play. Lovely thank you
Good morning! Being in Oregon, USA, I may never see that lovely town, so thank you, for a delightful Sunday morning jaunt! Joy to you both!

Thank you for saying this i live in the towns near Poitiers and people all over from France keep saying there is nothing to do 🥰
I love going on tours with you both! The organ was amazing! The stained glass windows and the architecture of the buildings are so unique. We have nothing close to it here!
Beautiful! Hope you had a good time at the dance. Thanks for the tour.
I’ve wanted to visit Poitier, so thank you so much for your wonderful historic tour of this beautiful city‼️😍
Another fun tour. What a beautiful old city. The 70’s architecture was so homely compared to the old. We had a wonderful American actor, Sidney Poitier, I wonder if his ancestors had history there? You have so many pretty places to go for a days outing.
Another wonderful walk-about, thank you Peter and Anna....so peaceful and beautiful. Thank you!
Aww lovely day out guys. Thanks for sharing. Sending love lisa xx❤
Beautiful. Thank you for the wonderful tour.
Thank you loved the trip out. The buildings were very interesting. Xx
I must have missed this when you first posted. Very hot here in Australia high 30s so more time indoors. Thankyou for sharing, you see with my eyes and share my sentiments exactly! Love to you Peter and Anna from Jane Southern Australian.. xxo xxo
Thoroughly enjoyed your walk through the town.

Thank you once again for taking us with you on this tour. Love seeing the old architecture and building details. Your vlogs never disappoint. Maine USA
Thank you for taking me to ancient, fascinating places I will never see. And thank you for your explanations of what we are seeing. I also loved watching your craftsmanship at the chateau and the farm. You 2 are a joy to watch.
Lovely trip, thank you for sharing
Thanks for the tour guys
Anna looked a tad cold and fed-up at the end of your vid, it did look like a bleak and chilly and wet day out.

So the Statue of Liberty so France is where our Statue of Liberty came from. I feel so contented to France even though I’m not. Thank you for another awesome tour. I’m loving it. I’m sorry you got caught in the rain Anna.🌂☔️☀️🌈
Love discovering France with you and Anna via my armchair!
Hi Peter and Anna, well Poitiers certainly had a lot to offer. Bach's toccata & fugue in d minor in the church of Notre Dame was definitely as I saw you say a Wow, did you stay to listen to it all? All the architecture was lovely except of course for the modern monstrosity which probably wouldn't get past the planners today. The island property would probably need a lot of maintenance I would have thought. It would be nice to get a proper look around though, then you'd know if you'd really like to live there or not Peter. Miss Anna, with your affinity with animals I think you enjoyed meeting the cat. I've yet to see one that isn't friendly towards you. Anyway, have a good week and I look forward to your next video. Best wishes.
I love the arquitectura you always point out!!

Once again your tour was so full of interesting details. You and Anna are so observant and take us along on some great trips. I will be back at Château de LaLande in September and hope to get to Poitiers now that you have travelled there for us. Many thanks! 💕🇨🇦
That was a beautiful outing love the architecture and city streets there. Anna has been quiet as of late, is she feeling well? Thanks for a lovely time.

Morning from Olympia, WA. Thank you so much for helping an armchair traveler.
Morning Peter & Anna, a lovely walk in the town of Poitiers. Very quiet, clean but it looks historically old. The house was most interesting built on the island with all that water, almost moat like!! I don't think I would like to live in such surroundings, the water seems a bit noisy as well. Maybe because it is still in the winter season, it could be totally different in summer. The glimpse of the Chateaux was very nice. The property must have been massive. I am sure it does become very expensive to care for such a huge garden and the Chateaux itself. A lovely way to spend the day walking and getting to know the surroundings. Thank you for sharing and showing, it was most pleasant. Coffee is always such an inviting drink on a overcast day. Do take care, happy days.
OOh ... a bit of Bach - Toccata and Fugue ... always best in that setting. As a child, in my History learning I used to make scenic models of the French/English battlefields - painting hundreds of Longbowmen 😁 ... The Prince of Wales 3 white feathers were allegedly stolen from the French at Crecy ... whilst it appears in some historical text ..there is no evidential basis. Early Waterwheels originally ran the water below ... but it was later found that an overshoot from above was more efficient
Yet again another lovely walk, such beautiful old buildings thank you xx
Thanks for your vlogs. We're 82 and can't travel much. We love your travels to your local villages. We also love your projects and attention to detail. I wish you still had a chateau to restore because your skills are superb. We live in Southern California so France is exotic from our perspective.

Beautiful old city, thank you, loved it
Lovely, good job!
I meant to ask if the circular light source over the reclined statue was a skylight designed for that piece in the original structure? Couldn’t tell what it was, but it was very effective lighting.
❤️The town of Poltier🥰
Beautiful tour. Anna seems very quiet last few videos....not her usual chatty self...hope she's ok xx
It was a lovely tour. Thanks Peter and Anna. I noticed in the chapel they had taken precautions in case ceiling ornamentation fell. In the USA that would not be OSHA approved. In many instances we scoff at their hand wringing precautions.
Wonderful as always Peter and Anna.👍
A beautiful city

So informative Thank you for sharing
👋👍❤️
10:21 looks like two totally different building styles to me. As if the stone building was there first (the more ancient and qualitative one. The original if you will), then the timber building (of lesser quality) was added later in time.
Oh my gosh, the person playing the pipe organ was fantastic! What lovely architecture! The 50 's dance sounds lovely! Thank you for sharing your lovely outing with us! Anna, are you okay?

The Hundred Years War, only lasted a hundred years, because the English were enjoying it so much..😃
Don't worry about the 1356 battle 🙂 All is long time forgiven, dear friend 😉 But you are right to mention it, because it is an important date in History, since it was catastrophic for the French army, which had decided to put on first line the heavy cavalry and the most prominent knights (the traditional way of fighting, actually, for decades and decades), whereas the English had started to experience a new strategy years ago, with a first line of archers (the famous longbows), during the war in Scotland. So the English army had developed the use of this weapon, which had shown its formidable efficiency. As a result, bingo ! the French army was decimated and lots and lots of powerful lords caught but above all, the king of France himself 🙂 Too bad…

@@ItsaWonderfulLife2 Yes, I quite agree. And so much that (fun fact), in the 50s, the French Prime minister Guy Mollet (you know, the architect of the EU but also a strong anglophile since WW1 and WW2) and British PM Eden talked about a union between France and GB, and the integration of France within the Commonwealth - which would have made de facto the Queen of England the Queen of France (in the 50s, France was ruled by the Constitution of the IV° Republic, which was a parliamentary system very similar to the English one, not a presidential régime like today) lol The BBC revealed it some years ago, thanks to declassified files 🙂 By the way, how does it go for you with Brexit ? I hope you don't face too many administrative difficulties here ! Is it ok ?

At the battle of Poitiers the Franks defeated the Arabs and stopped the spreading of Muslim religion to the rest of Europe from the west side. 15 years earlier, from 717-718 the Arabs of the Umayyad Caliphate sieged Konstantinople but the capital of the East Roman empire (aka Byzantium) endured because they fought back and used the super weapon of the era,the Liquid Fire (Υγρόν Πυρ).This way, they stopped the spreading of the Arabs and Muslim religion from the East side of Europe.
