Ep. 324: Boulder River | Absaroka Mountains | Montana | RV travel camping boondocking

RV camping truly doesn't get much better than this! This week we're boondocking at a spectacular site at 5,380 feet of elevation in Montana's Absaroka Mountains, mere feet from the bubbling Boulder River's bank. This is where they filmed both "The Horse Whisperer" and "A River Runs Through It" within Custer-Gallatin National Forest, bordering Yellowstone National Park. Come along!
(And yeah, we mispronounced "Absaroka" throughout this video. We know.)

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a KZread channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you'll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We've now transitioned from "long-timing" for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.
We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

  • @GrandAdventure

Don, we can't overstate how much Starlink has changed our situation. Prior to 2021, we'd arrive in a place like this and look at our phones, and mutter, "Can't stay here." Moreover, we always scout in advance electronically, using land use maps, topo maps and satellite imagery (which is how we found this spot), and before we'd also have to pull up cell tower maps and guesstimate the potential for cell service. Now, we've eliminated the additional (and least likely to be accurate) step in that process.

Absolutely beautiful boondocking site. I loved this adventure. One of the things I like about staying at established RV campsites is the people you meet. I think boondocking with friends is also great camaraderie. But when traveling alone, the RV campgrounds offer some interaction with others of like mind and spirit.😊 Gord

  • @GrandAdventure

    @GrandAdventure

    10 ай бұрын

There's truth to that, Gord. Right now I'm flying solo with Zoe as Mrs. GA is gone for a few weeks, and we had to leave our friends behind with some mechanical issues. However, the campground I'm in this week in Nebraska isn't really conducive to interacting with anyone, either -- although I did enjoy meeting a viewer when I first arrived. So, wanting a bit of human interaction I instead went to a local brew pub for dinner last night, and enjoyed a pleasant conversation with the guys sitting on either side of me at the bar. It did the trick.

Beautiful campsite. Yup... mountain weather is no funny business. If its not raining then its hailing if not that then clouds roll in. Solar is not "the" solution. In coming back from "out west" I have legitimately also considered wind power and hydro power. Given myself being stuck on the east coast I had to put that to rest but my interest in both of these is going to be renewed if I ever venture out west again. Drop a doo hickey into the river with an extension cord... bam source of power. Not much but you know every little bit counts.

When traveling from the west coast to Indiana to visit family we leave Wendover NV after staying there for free at the Casinos then the next nite we usually either on the way there , way back, or both spend a nite at that Little America...One time out of necessity because of snow...Looking forward to seeing what be in Cody next week (other than wind)...If your still on the road travel safe, and be well no matter what your doing....

We're more working our way around SLC at the moment, as we're not due back there until Dec. 1. So the plan is to work our way a little east, then south through the fall to where temps will remain warm-ish until it's time to beeline back to Utah. We've stopped at Little America many times, but never for an overnight. And you know Wyoming=wind!!

I'm really good at losing flies, Scott. 😁 Honestly, until they come up with a nationwide fishing license, it's tough to fish as a fulltime RV'er when you have to buy a different fishing license in each state. For that reason alone, I leave the tackle in storage.

Didn't even think about fishing licenses for the different state. That would be a pain in the bass.

Incredible spot, how do you find such good spots? Were you on west Boulder road?

Funny you should ask, for we did an episode on the precise process that we follow to find great boondocking sites: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5Z9ybF6m8mcftI.html Using the techniques shared therein, we already knew about this spot before we even arrived in the area. Our spot was on the Main Boulder Road, and there's even a link to a Google Maps pin of the spot available right in the video description for this episode.

Hi, would it be possible for you to tell me exactly where this campsite is? I live in Helena and just bought a small trailer and I’d like to check this site out.
