damn, never thought about the towers and their crossover points affecting the vocals like that. you broke that down so that most folks can understand it. Currently watching your series to setup my 5.2 system (all klipsch bookshelf and two RSL subs). I have learned a lot from you. one of your viewers comments was about how the A/V receiver thinks the subs are a mile away and you said, that’s normal... don’t mess with it. made me feel better as it set mine three times as far as my others still diving into the REW and auto EQ. videos trying to comprehend. Really need the miniDSP tho to go full speed ahead. That’s next on the agenda. Thank you for taking the time out for producing all your videos. You are a subject matter expert. 👍🏻

First off I want to thank you for what you are doing on your channel. I have learned more in the past 2 weeks of watching your videos then i have in the past 6 years. So I am looking to upgrade my front sound stage. Right now I have klipsch r-28f towers and a klipsch rp-450c center channel. My debate is to either get rp-600m bookshelf for my mains, keep the center so the tweeters all match and the 1000hz range closer to ear level or... sell them all and get 3-3way towers with a crossover closer to that vocal range but I'm not sure what speakers to go with. My price range is $2000-2500. Any help would be great.

I didn’t see the need for big mains and ran 6.5 bookshelves with 88db sensitivity. However my father bought a 4.1 JBL EON Pro setup with eon 615 with 15” woofers and pro amps and horn tweeters. HOLY MOTHER OF DYNAMICS. Even at the same calibrated volume those big boys have explosive range, it was quite the eye opener. I’m not discounting the difference the sub makes, but proper (read, overkill) headroom above 80hz makes a pretty big difference in my new experience.

The good thing about towers is you get more headroom and smoother bass response when crossing over even at 80hz. The AVR has a -24dB/octave slope so knowing the towers can hit that low (say 30 or 40hz) on their own at -3dB means they are very capable for good output and integration with the separate subwoofer.

We should always measure the response of the crossover point to see how it looks. You'd be surprised how well a sub crossed to a speaker that is tuned to even 60/70 hz can look on measurements especially with boundary gain.

I changed my klipsch floorstanders with upgraded 2.5way crossovers to bring the acoustic center up to just between the tweeter and upper woofer. Lower woofer only plays 400&below. If I had to do it again, I would go DIY. I will go DIY eventually, and because I upgraded a lot on these mains, I'd imagine they would be better utilized as my side surrounds. I'm not sure i would want to sell them, as I just put $600 in crossover parts, damping, bracing, etc into my rp6000s&rp504c. They sound incredible now though, but it really was a poor design

I used to think I knew a lot about the hobby, and I suppose those of us who watch your videos know far more than the average person, but you cut through a lot of misconceptions like a hot knife through butter. So many pro tips in your video series! Thanks for making these! Given episode 18's topic of chest slam and this episode's comparison of bookshelves and towers, would you consider doing a video on crossover points? I believe Brent Butterworth measured my SVS Ultra Towers to be equivalent to decent 12" subwoofers and wonder now about the pros and cons of different crossover points.

That's why I try and demonstrate as much as possible. Most of us learn better and it clicks better visually.

@@hometheatergurus Thanks for referring me to the videos I need. I ask about a specific crossover video because I'm wondering now - thanks to your videos - whether there's any common sense issues worth discussing specifically, or whether there may be specific exceptions to the rule. It's also a common enough topic that maybe it's worth its own video. Like I said, I have some robust towers, so would a lower crossover point permit better blending with my sub? I only have the one sub, so would different crossover points have different room or modal interactions? Everyone knows a sub is more dynamic than even the best towers in bass, but does one run the risk of outpacing your main speakers at certain crossover points more than others? I'm not expecting you to answer these in a reply, but these are the kinds of questions that would be great to address. That said, you're the expert, and if you believe you've said everything worth discussing about the topic, then I'm sure that's all there is to it. I'll check out those videos soon. And again, because it's worth repeating, you and your content are fantastic. Thanks for doing what you do.

Hi great video, I have the RP 600m paired with the RP-504C on a Denon 3300w with SVS Sb2000 sub( Mini Dsp Eq) with surrounds and front heights. I currently only use a single sub as there is only one sweet spot i care about. I have created my own curve on Audyssey to bring more boost in the bass the front stage. When i have the speakers at 80hz the bass is good but when I have at 40hz its to my ears even better, it's a lot tighter and less bloated and more detail. I have tried multiple different setups as i know i should be crossing them a lot higher, but at the same time my ears are telling me otherwise. My sub has a really good flat response to 120hz with some dips occuring after that I didn't correct measured through REW. The only way 80hz is somewhat better is when I turn off Audyssey completely and increase the bass in tone control. Perhaps trying your Sub EQ curve on episode 7 rather than flat might yield better results and forgetting about Audyssey altogether. I would like to know your thoughts on Audyssey and the target curves they use, I feel like they make my klipsch underperform, also any suggestions would be welcome, I was also looking to upgrade to the Onkyo TXRZ840 or even going with a Diarc Receiver instead, but something tells me I not going to solve the issue with a new receiver. Thanks in advance Jim

@@CrimsonJR83 Thanks for the reply, ya I've tried Dynamic Eq on different offsets including 0. The thing about Dynamic EQ is that is boosts all the other speakers too at lower volumes and set to "0" sounds too bloated compared to Audyssey being off. I tried "-15" for a while but I feel it's more of what Audyssey is doing to the speakers. I going to try having no correction on Audyssey using the Multi EQ App to see if that would make a difference

I wouldn't swap AVRs. I'd suspect you have negative summation at the crossover point when at 80hz and its not as bad when you drop down to 40hz. Measure with REW like we did in episode 7 or at a minimum follow ep 10 and see what it looks like. If you have a dip at or around the crossover adjust sub distance in the avr for best response.

I like this one. I do wonder though, I have 7 towers, my front stage are 40" tall 2 ways (dual 12s, compression horn), my surround sides are 3-ways dual 10, 6.5" mid, compression tweeter, and my rears are 3-ways as well. My towers are all elevated. My surround sides are lifted roughly 12 to 15 inches off of the ground, my rears are about 36 inches off of the ground (my second row is elevated). I can see the point of bookshelves but I just don't think, in terms of SPL, that a bookshelf is keeping up with a comparable tower. Or am I looking at it all wrong. There aren't many bookshelves with 2 10s, a 6.5" mid and tweeter or a side-firing 8, dual 7" mids and compression tweeters. I've paid super close attention so far and have my crossovers at 80Hz, but even with that, 80Hz has to hit WAY harder in my towers than any bookshelf can dream of doing. When I was running full range on my towers (before my Steveducation) it was no contest, a bookshelf simply can't hit 28Hz (great when listening to music) like a tower can. I guess I wrote all of that to say, while I see why bookshelves can prove preferable and why the award winning home theaters use them, towers simply have more drivers and more area moving more air. They can generally take more watts to give more output across more drivers. When it comes to breath taking sound, more is more, no? Thoughts?

  • @hometheatergurus

This is strictly home theater where we cross to subs. When that's done the subs will always sound better if they're properly setup and it's the only way to get a similar seat to seat response. When crossed to subs we don't need the mains to move that air. As seen in the chest kick video the demand in the mains is minimal even when cranked. Other videos covered that. This one is really about how the handling of vocals and ease of placement differs.

@@budgetaudiophile6048 if you can produce 90hz cleanly ar your levels with an 8 inch driver...what's a 12 inch gonna do different? 90hz at a given output doesn't change with the driver. You can either hit the level needed cleanly or you can't. Remember I've had mains with dual 15s in them at one time. Then I got smart and started learning more about the acoustics and quit following fads and learned about high end room acoustics. Did i ever tell you about the time a buddy snuck a small JBL 305 into a get together where they were blind testing 1099 and JTR and other heavy hitters? The guys were blindly picking this little 305 . Not cranked to high levels of course but good levels while judging for overall quality sound and sound stage. But I get it. It's hard to get over the bigger is better mindset. Now with subs where they're asked to move lots of air it's different but at these frequencies it's not the case. Keep in mind a speaker meant for a huge cinema is designer for that huge cinema. Now look at your room. Output needs are light years less.

Dude you know a lot about speakers and home theater but you are craazy critical. You actually think that your feet reclined make that much of a difference in your speaker sound? Thats nuts! Thats why i said it before, you need a ONE man home theater for yourself ; )

What can I say I'm after perfection. Many of us have families and friends that also enjoy our rooms so we need to pay attention to more than one seat. If you only care about one seat than thats cool too. Make as few compromises as possible. Sometimes we have to make them but it's important to understand them when we do. This hobby is too expensive to not learn the compromises. But of course you can choose to just rock on and ignore them.

Towers are great as long as aren't blocking drivers with reclined feet, seat backs etc. Especially the drivers that are producing vocals.
