Ep. 2: Mike and Carole Epstein's G-scale Garden Railroad Layout Tour

Ойын-сауық

In Episode 2 of the Sacramento Valley Garden Railway Society layout tours series, we visit Mike and Carole Epstein's garden railroad in Fair Oaks, California. This is a railroad built for running their long passenger and freight trains while relaxing in the beautiful setting of a large rural backyard. A unique depot structure doubles as train storage, so they can be up and running in minutes! You'll see trains from USA Trains, Aristo-Craft, LGB, Accucraft, and more, with power provided by batteries with AirWire control, and Phoenix sound.
Tune in next time to visit a short line that's truly a model railroad in a garden. You'll see battery and live steam operations, and come away amazed with what can be built in a small yard. Please be sure to Subscribe so you won't miss it. Please also Like and Comment!

This is the video that inspired me to start a garden railway. I probably won’t ever have anything as nice as the one in this video, but I hope to use a few ideas from it. So far, I have collected enough track to make a loop. I’m building trestle bents that will elevate the track, and will keep making them as I save for a locomotive. It’s a long term goal for me, but it gives me something to look forward to. To me, there is something magical about trains. Thank you for making the video, and explaining some of the things that you did to make such a great railroad layout!

It is always great to see what others have done as I have not yet started mine just yet. I have always loved trains and started out in HO years ago and then did and N Scale layout. I am ready for G Scale as I really have more room outside than in LOL. Thanks for the video and keep making new ones as it helps us all to learn from each other.

Kendra Watkins Sounds good! Depending on where you are in Canada the process and materials may need to be more rigorous, but it’s totally doable. In fact, look up Imagination Corporation and see what they’ve been able to do with concrete! They’re from British Columbia, but have done a lot of work further north as well. I went to for their fall workshop last year, and plan to bring some of their techniques to my garden railway this year.

thanks for the advise, have over 2000 feet of track and have 110 feet on straights. Have the track up on wood post that sit on the ground, that way they can lift with the ground lifting with the frost and settle back in the spring. Minor adjust are needed in the spring. Using brass track mostly. 15% st. stl.

Awesome, did you make the mountains with 2x4’s and put concrete or plaster over it? Is it better to use battery operated, and how long do the batteries last? Thank you for your comments. I’m new to the hobby and I want to do it right the first time.

I’m sorry we missed this question. There’s a lot to discuss there, and it might depend on where you’re located! Joining a local garden railway club is the best way to get started. Second best would be an online community; there are several on Facebook, as well as dedicated forum websites. As for my personal take, I like steel and concrete mountains! And I run DCC through the rails. But battery is lower maintenance and probably a better choice for most. The owner of the railroad in this video can run for many hours on a charge.

Sacramento Valley Garden Railway Society I am looking to repower a bunch of my locomotives with AirWire. That being said there is the possibility of using a system other than Phoenix, possibly Tsunami or LokSound. Really depends on the size and power demands of the locomotives l.

ecoRfan The DCC/sound decoders you’re referring to would be best used with the CVP CONVRTR or I think there’s another manufacturer with a similar product... it’s basically a mobile DCC system so you can use a traditional DCC decoder with battery/RC.

@@sacramentovalleygardenrailway Yes I am considering the CONVERTR for some locomotives, and the G4X or M15 for others depending on size or sound.
