I’ve been trying to learn the basics of music theory but some concepts seem kind of counterintuitive or vague. I don’t know how much of it is your excellent pedagogy vs learning music theory from a non-Western perspective, but it’s all effortlessly clicking for me! It’s so interesting because the way you explain it feels very intuitive, like it’s uncovering knowledge I instinctually understood and has been unlocked on a more conscious level. So cool, thank you!

To Anuja Kamat Namaste, I am Pranav Ganapathy, a keyboard player plus carnatic vocalist from Mumbai (Mulund). Basically, I have learnt western music in keyboard in which I have used conversion techniques to play carnatic music with no help of any teacher. I can identify the notes of the Hindustani music and can share relations with carnatic and western music. Just to share with you the main differences of the note names in all three of them: Hindustani Swara: Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, Sa Carnatic Swara: Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma Pa, Da, Ni, Sa Western note: Doh, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Doh The Bilawal That of Hindustani music is equal to Shankarabharanam of Carnatic music which is the primary major scale. The distance between two swaras / notes is a step. The Sa and Ri becomes a whole step while Ga and Ma becomes a half step. The process goes till we return to the Ni and Sa again as a half step. Therefore this raga has five whole and two half steps. The steps change in case the raga changes.

Most important thing what I liked about your initiative , Anuja, is that you explained many concepts in Hindustani sangeet , which we used to hear about but didn't know the technical meaning. Understanding them conceptually is bit difficult and needs actual experiencing but at least this gives the information about meaning. No one has I think done such work before I guess. Great initiative please keep it up.
